Tap, Tap, Tap echoed down the empty street, Selena had been tapping her foot impatiently for what felt like an hour.
It was 12:35 pm or so said her watch and Rowen still was not there. The weather was alright, fairly warm yet not rainy or windy. That didn't mean she liked waiting.
At his leisure, Rowan strolled over to the stop sign as Selena was practically exuding impatience if that were possible. He however stood relaxed which made it worse.
"Hey," he greeted.
Selena hmphed in response.
This caught Rowan's attention and he looked her over before returning to his phone, "Kept you waiting, did I?"
"Five minutes"
"Oh, How Horrible," he exclaimed.
Selena sighed, "Let’s just go"
"A little grumpy?"
"Someone kept me up late", she shot back, but as he began to smirk, she realized her mistake, "Ugh Not like that."
"Like what? Maybe food will brighten your mood."
"You’re paying." Selena walked beside him giving him a shrug.
The bell sounded sharp when they entered the pizzeria. Rowan led her to a table then turned to her and asked, "What do you want on it?"
Selena thought for a moment, "Pepperoni”, a smug thought came to her mind, and just for making her wait she called in an overly sweet voice, "and an iced tea would be nice."
Minutes later Rowan dropped a pizza box in the middle of the table followed by an iced tea.
Chewing her pizza, Selena took a good look at Rowan. He had a golden complexion like a person who had spent the summers in the sun. His eyes had a yellowish ring to his soft green eyes that contrasted against his dark hair which had some highlights. Selena couldn't tell if they were natural, even if they were not, he was attractive for sure. Rowan’s edgy ‘keeps you on your toes’ personality probably made him a real heartthrob to the ladies. Selena didn't feel that way about him, she felt as if she could not completely trust him. She wasn't even really okay with how he did not know her and yet he wanted to spend so much time with her. Had this happened before her life had come crumbling down, Selena would have felt different. It was just the wrong time to be stopping to make friends. Let alone have someone take the risk of being with her when a hunter arrived.
Selena’s train of thought was broken by Rowan looking at her for an answer to an unknown question.
"Uh, pardon?", She quickly asked a bit embarrassed.
"I asked how long you'll be in town for?"
"Oh, not long. I'm not planning to spend a lot of time anywhere. So many places to go. I might come back here at some point though. It’s nice being in the south."
"If you come back don't bother paying for a place, stay with us, there’s a spare room and free food. TV what more could you need."
"That would be great", Selena lied.
He gave her a toothy smile that reminded her of his little sister and then took a swig of his drink.
"Why are you being so nice to me?", She blurted out. It wasn't intentional, it’s like texting and sending something you were thinking but did not mean to hit send. Selena did want to know the answer though.
He wasn't offended, which made her feel better about asking. Rowan began speaking after a moment of consideration," I guess because you’re not just another crazy possessive chick. At first, I was just being nice, I recognized you and wanted to know how the hell you got here. After that, it was just that you were not trying to be super egocentric twenty-four seven."
"Thanks", the simple one-word response was the only one she could come up with.
They finished devouring the pizza, and eventually, Rowan got up and bought some breadsticks. It was nice to have as much food as she could want. She still had to leave soon.
Rowan's eyes flicked down to his phone then he shoved it into his pocket. "If I leave you alone for a minute, will you be, okay?"
