It had been 3 weeks since Selena had found the letter and neither Nicki nor Selena had told anyone else about it. Even though they had gone shopping for a backpack full of supplies, neither of them knew whether or not the letter and spray paint was a joke.
Selena had two exams scheduled in the next four days and then school was over for the summer.
English was her last period class and it was the last day of full classes before summer vacation started.
Selena was sitting distracted in English, time blurring as it passed when her teacher suddenly asked, “Selena, why don't you read from where Ryland broke off?", Mr. Kirkston looked down at Selena’s book before continuing," After all you've been avidly reading all the way to page 118."
Selena faked being surprised and tried to remember what page she was supposed to be on… 49 or was it 227?
Selena quietly asked, "Um...what page are we on again?"
The rest of the classes’ eyes had turned to her, some of them giggled, others just didn't care anymore.
"Page 55 third paragraph down."
She finished the paragraph and Mr. Kirkston asked Caitlyn to take over.
When the bell finally rang Selena tossed her bag over her shoulder and went straight out the door to her neighbor, Michael’s, locker.
He was already pulling out his gear," Well Sel I take it you want me to drive You home?"
" Yes, you live like four houses down", She rolled her eyes.
"I was joking."
"Yeah, sure you are," Selena was beginning to become impatient, “Can you drive me home today?"
Nope," he stated popping the P.
" What do you mean no?"
"I have stuff," he looked her over with an amused glint, and with his eyebrows raised it was clear he knew she was getting irritated.
" Okay...", it was the only thing she could say without trying to strangle him.
"I have a date, which means I’m not going home since I have," he looked over Selena’s head at a clock on the wall," a half hour to be at Tes'."
"Alright have fun!", Selena tried to sound cheerful but was too focused on how she would be getting home. She didn't have enough change on her to bus not to mention they took forever to get over to her neighborhood.
She walked out of the door to walk the route that goes through the parking lot into the grassy fields.
Selena decided to go sit on the hillside in front of the empty football field. Laying her head on her backpack she started to wish that her phone had not died so that she could at least text her mom or even Nicki to see if she had her mom’s van. The warm late spring weather made it so she didn't mind waiting the hour maybe an hour and a half it would take for her mother to come to pick her up as previously planned.
Nobody had shown up for a class today and be done with her in-class exams made her happy, no more homework for two months. No stress, it’s great.
Starring up at the clouds Selena thought about the note, she wondered if there was any way it could be real. Boredom came quickly, some other students passed by Selena as they walked home from school.
After sitting up for a while she noticed a small black car parked on the other side of the street. Its emergency blinkers weren't on and it had tinted windows.
"Movie level creepy", Selena muttered.
She laid back down, people parked a bunch of places, and tv ...isn't exactly the most correct source of information in the world.
A few minutes later she heard an engine start and when Selena peeked across the street the car was gone. Two men stood in its place deep in conversation.
Selena watched them curiously while picking up her bag to move. They saw her moving and one of them reached into his coat which was odd since it was warm and pulled out a piece of paper.
Their eyes darted from the paper and then back to Selena. She did not recognize them. Selena was uncomfortable enough, but they kept checking the paper.
When they turned to each other she stood up, slung her backpack on turned, and slowly shuffled away in the other direction.
Selena didn't check if they were following her, once she was out of view of the hill, she started running down the street and over a small dirt path into a park.
Slowing down a bit to dodge a few people and a frisbee too, she looked ahead to the crossing roads. The light was red but the box-counting down seconds was at three. Selena broke her own silent rule, she looked behind her.
At first, Selena didn't see them, but then they came into view as they burst from the path.
They saw her, and they ran faster towards her.
