Alex was met by the rushing crowd of familiar faces; classmates and acquaintances alike, some students buried in their lockers, some chatting, some meandering through the maze of halls and bodies.
The crowd was always familiar, familiar in the way that the halls would be almost hauntingly absent without them. Though the crowd was familiar it was ever-changing, the mass of people shifting and changing atop the pale floors.
One familiar sight, however, that never changed in the day-to-day gazes of the busy students and staff were the walls: Alex felt a sense of safety inside the walls of the school, the baby blues against the soft whites provided a comforting juxtaposition with the overbearing teachers and daunting exams that haunt the collective minds of the students that are the victims of these many downsides of school life.
Alex moves to his locker, which sits as once amongst dozens, all coated with the same baby blue colour that sits upon the walls, almost as if to act as a kind of camouflage to give the halls a cleaner, more sleek look during the more empty hours of the day. Alex opens his locker, pulling out a pencil case and a couple of textbooks before closing the locker door, only to be met with the smiling face of Jacob, one of Alex's first friends since he started high school.
"Morning buddy, you look awfully dead today" Jacob remarks sarcastically. Alex lets out a yawn before replying: "You know me, always on my A-game." he says, matching Jacob's sarcasm, though his mind is barely on Jacob's remark or even the class they're soon to head to, it was on one thing: Maxine.
Alex shared a class with her. Although he tried he never really rid his interest in her from the two friends he also shared the class with, the two friends that have been with him since the first day of school: Jacob and Cassidy-Rose. Alex sat between the two, occasionally participating in their conversations in a failing attempt to cover his daydreaming and fawning and loving stares at the girl that sat across the room from him.
Maxine looks over, their eyes meet, though Alex doesn't even notice as his mind is occupied with thoughts of her. She breaks his trance, poking her tongue out at him in a playful way, causing Alex to embarrassingly look down at his textbook, pretending he wasn't just caught staring.
Oh shit oh shit oh shit, she noticed me staring, she totally noticed me staring, she probably thinks I'm a creep, she... poked her tongue out at me? She looked like she was smiling. God that smile is so perfect. Alex is startled out of his thoughts as Cassidy-Rose nudges his arm.
"She's totally into you lover-boy, make a damn move already" she whispers to him "Shut up Cass, there's no chance, I mean just look at her, she's so out of my league, she's so perfect, she's-" "She's looking at you" Cassidy says, cutting off Alex with a giggle. Alex looks up, locking eyes again with Maxine and freezing for a moment, his face adorned with a rosy blush. She gives him a small grin, before turning back to continue her work. "Tooold yoooooou" Cassidy-Rose remarks, cheekily giggling to herself as she too, continues her work.
Alex nudges Cassidy, before continuing on with his own work, determined to not let his wandering mind make him fall behind on classwork.
Maxine is an icon of beauty in soul and appearance. She's the epitome of kindness and care. She's endearing and sweet.
Maxine is Maxine, and Alex loves her for it.
