Back home Jaxon decides to distract himself with football practice,
meaning that he leaves the house pretty early. Yujah on the other hand
doesn't quite know what to do with his free time. He would usually go
out with his friends, read books or listen to music but with the current
situation, he doesn't feel like doing so. Instead, he lays down on his
younger brother's bed while watching him play with his toys. He is
happy to see that the child is doing something other than crying and
feels like the overnight stay at aunt Mary's place helped with that.
The
teenager's mind goes back to the events of the weekend. Hearing about
what happened to his uncle made him unsure. Jaxon will never readily
agree to live with a gay person, but what other options do they have?
No matter how much he debates about it in his mind, it's their best
choice if they really want to stay together. They are orphans and Yujah
knows that it will be difficult to find people who would take all
three of them in. If he can make Jaxon agree to live with their uncle
and Jaxon really can't take it, then his brother can move out to live
on his own as soon as he turns 18... or something like that. However,
if their uncle Marco is gay, then that means that he might be in a
relationship with another man, which is definitely not something
Jaxon would be fine with - even if he can manage to tolerate Marco
himself. And Jonah has never really been confronted with the subject
before.
Living with that man is going to be a risk - one that Yujah would like to take.
Then again - their family kicked him out. Why would Marco want to take them in in the first place? And yet, he hopes that it will go well and a part of him might even be excited to get to know this man called Marco Robins.
Since endless thinking is not going to help him in any way, Yujah decides to do something productive: clean up their parents' room. There is barely a week left till the funeral and they will need some of the stuff in there, especially their parents' best clothing. They are also probably not going to live there much longer and they need to start somewhere with sorting out -don't they?
When he
opens the door, he feels weird. It has been years since he last entered
that room. The bed obviously looks as if only one person slept in
there, only his mother's side being used. Sighing, he enters the quiet
room. The room is dark, only a few rays of sunshine making their way
through the curtains. He makes his way to the window and first opens
the curtains, then the window itself in order to let some fresh air in.
The weather is nice and it's getting warmer outside. The boy leans on
the windowsill, looks outside, and listens to the sound of birds. He
takes a deep breath and stays for a bit. After a while, he stretches
and starts looking around. Where should he start? He decides to first
take a look at their closet, then the rest of the room's shelving.
When he opens the last drawer of the bedside table on his mother's side of the bed, he finds a little box in the back. He takes it out cautiously and takes a close look - he definitely hasn't seen it before. Yujah shakes the box lightly and hears a small noise - it sounds like something light is in there. After a bit, his curiosity gets the best of him and he opens the box. On top, he finds an envelope with golden adornments. His eyes widen when he sees the addressee - the letter is addressed to Marco Robins! Under the envelope, he finds a small package. The address is different, but the addressee is the same. Then he realises that there was something else - on the side, next to the package seems to be some kind of paper, stuck between the box and package. With caution, he takes the package out to retrieve the paper, which turns out to be an old photograph. The picture shows two children, a little girl, and an even smaller boy. On the back of the photograph, it says 'Monica (6) and Marco (4)' in bold letters. Yujah also recognizes the background as his late grandparents' garden. The boy puts all of it back into the box, the same way he found it, and sets it down on top of the bedside table.
After going through their stuff for a while longer, he decides to take a break. He closes the window and exits the room while closing the door after him. As he passes the living room, he finds his younger brother passed out on the couch, the TV on. Snatching the remote and turning off the TV, he takes a look around before spotting a blanket, which he covers the sleeping child with. After that, he makes his way to the kitchen, takes a glass out of the cupboard, and fills it with water before downing it and placing it on the table. He decides to sit down for a little, only to stand up again a few seconds after, and starts pacing the room. Was there anything else he could occupy himself with? His eyes land on the old newspapers laying on the sideboard. Realizing that they haven't checked their mail in days, he goes to the front door, puts on his shoes, and grabs his keys, before exiting.
It was a good idea to check the mail, Yujah realizes after taking a look. There was a lot of stuff in there. The boy takes all of it out and into the house. Then he puts everything down on the kitchen table and starts going through it. He sets all the newspapers aside and takes a look at the surprising amount of envelopes. Two of those are addressed to his father, probably work-related - he sets those aside on a separate pile. Others are addressed to 'the Clark family'. Again, he sets those aside on a separate pile. Then there is one that seems different from the rest. First, the color: a light, refreshing blue. Then, the addressee - or addressees - as the envelope was addressed at 'Jaxon, Yujah and Jonah Clark'. And who send it? Marco Robins & Denis Miller! Although Yujah doesn't know anyone by the name 'Denis Miller', he has a good idea about who that could be - after all, who else would have their name written right next to his uncle's like that other than a partner? The boy opens the envelope with slightly trembling fingers and finds a letter.
'Dear Jaxon, Yujah, and Jonah', it reads, 'I'm not sure
if you've heard of me, so I'm writing a quick introduction. My name is
Marco and I am your mother's younger brother. First of all, I'm sorry
for your loss. The message came as a shock to me, too. I didn't expect
to hear of my sister's passing that soon in life. I wish we'd meet
under different circumstances.
I had a falling out with the rest of
the family a long time ago, but if you wish to live with your uncle,
even if you don't know him, my lover and I would be happy to meet and
get to know you.
I'll leave my number st the bottom of this letter, so feel free to call me to set a date.
Yours, Marco and Denis.'
After reading the letter, the teen takes a deep breath. He then takes out his smartphone and types in the number, saving it under 'Uncle Marco'. Then he stares at the new contact for a while. Should he? His finger hovers over the call button. With another deep breath, he presses the green button and holds his phone up to his ear. His heart is racing. After a few rings, an unfamiliar male voice echoes through the device. "Hello, Marco Robins speaking." Yujah opens his mouth, then closes it again. "Hello?", the voice says again. The boy hangs up. "Yuyu?", the sudden voice startles the teen a bit. "Hey, sleepy head. How was your nap?", he then asks his brother as he turns around to face the child. The child yawns. "I missed some of 'Louney bear's adventure'. Why did I have to fall asleep?", the boy said with puffed cheeks. His older brother stands up to pet the boy's head. "You can watch the rerun later, okay?", Yujah replies and kisses Jonah's head. The child nods eagerly, with a smile on its lips. "Okay." Then, Yujah has an idea. "I was thinking... would you like to go to Lia's with me for a bit?" Jonah puts one of his fingers under his chin and scrunches his eyebrows together. "Hmmmmm. Okay.", he says, before nodding eagerly. "Okay, go put on your shoes.", the older brother says. The child runs out of the kitchen. Yujah chuckles, before following the boy, taking the letter with him.
A few minutes later, they arrive at the Rossi family's
place. The older boy gets out his keys and unlocks the front door. When
Bianca hears the door getting unlocked, she pauses doing the dishes in
order to take a look. Who could it be? "Hello, mamma. I hope
we're not bothering you.", Yujah says as Jonah runs up to the woman to
hug her. "Of course not. How could you ever bother me?", Bianca
answers, before greeting the older boy with kisses on his cheeks. "If
you're looking for Guiliana, though, she's out at practice." Yujah
takes Jonah's jacket to hang it up together with his while replying: "I
know. Jaxon is at practice, too, and maybe you forgot, but the
cheerleading practice is always on the same dates as football practice,
for some reason..." That's when he notices another familiar jacket on
the coat rag. "Is Ben back?", he asks and Bianca can't help but notice
the underlying excitement in the boy's eyes and voice. "He is. He came
back late yesterday night... knowing him, he's probably still sleeping -
at least he hasn't come down to eat anything yet. And it's already way
past twelve!" The woman shakes her head. "Jonah?", the older boy asks.
"Yes?" A smile forms on Yujah's lips. "Want to go wake Ben?" The
younger boy grins mischievously, before running off towards Ben's room.
"We'll be right back.", Yujah tells Bianca, before following him. The
woman laughs and goes back to work.
"What the hell?!", an older boy's voice complains as Yujah reaches Ben's room. When he looks inside, he is faced with the image of Jonah jumping up and down on Ben's bed while shaking a bundle wrapped in a blanket. The only thing visible from the bundle is a wild mop of brown hair sticking out on one end. Yujah represses a laugh. "Get up, get up, get up!", the child shouts. The bundle - also known as Ben - groans, before taking a peek outside. His eyes meet with Yujah's, as he throws off his blanket to tickle the child onto his bed and wrap it up in his blanket instead, before using it as a pillow. Jonah laughs and squeals throughout the whole thing. "Benn.", he complains, "Gett off! You're heavy!" Ben ignores the child and keeps looking at the teen in his doorway. "Hey.", the boy's sleepy voice says with an accusing tone. "What are you just standing there for? You see that brat bothering my sleep and dare to not help me?" Yujah, who catches the glint in Ben's eyes just in time, starts running for his life. Ben shoots off after him at record speed. Meanwhile, Jonah starts to recover from his laughing fit before de-tangling himself from the blanket Ben wrapped him up in.
Yujah
runs down the stairs but gets caught and tackled onto the floor not
even a minute into the race. Stupid athletes. Binaca, who heard multiple
pairs of loud footsteps running around followed by a thud, appears in
front of the boys faster than the flash and clears her throat. The boys
- who were bickering before - stop to look at the woman. "Care to
explain why a 19-year-old is pinning down a 15-year-old with all his
body weight in the middle of my hallway?" Ben gets off of the younger
boy and both of them stand up. Bianca is now standing in front of them
with her arms crossed and one of her eyebrows raised. "So?" The older
boy looks at her sheepishly. "Hey, mom." Bianca squints her eyes. "Don't
'hey, mom' me. What do you think you're doing? What if someone gets
hurt? And how come you're still in your pajamas? What would people think
if we got visitors now and the oldest kid in this household is acting
like a twelve-year-old?" The teen shrivels under the smaller woman's
gaze. "I'm going to get dressed?", he says timidly, yet not managing to
hide his smile. "Damn well you are. Don't even think of coming back
down here before you look presentable, got it?" The boy nods. "Yes,
ma'am.", he says before leaving.
Bianca looks at Yujah, who is rubbing one of his elbows, which he hit the floor with. "Are you okay? Honestly, he's such a brute.", she says. "I'm alright.", Yujah answers while desperately trying to ignore the pain his body is in. Ben's tackle itself isn't much of a problem but combined with the bruises that are still decorating his body, well-hidden beneath his clothes, his whole body is now hurting after having Ben's weight on it. "But I actually came here to talk to you about something... I think Jonah will stay with Ben for a little, so if you don't mind..." Bianca nods. "Of course. Let's take a seat. Do you want something to drink?" The boy follows her into the kitchen and closes the door behind them. "Some water is fine." The woman nods and takes out two glasses. Yujah takes the water can and fills them as soon as Bianca puts them on the table. Both of them sit down and take a sip. "So, what can I do for you?", the brown-haired woman asks. Yujah takes out the letter and hands it to her, wordlessly. "Can I read it?", Bianca asks and the boy nods.
After the woman read the letter, Yujah explains the whole 'Marco situation' to her - starting from the call they got, over what he learned at aunt Mary's place, to him trying to call the mobile number in the letter.
"I see... I also think it might be a good idea to stay with him. If I could, I would let you boys live with us... but I don't think that's very realistic and David would probably throw a fit if all three of you started living here permanently.", Bianca says with a chuckle at the end. "Anyway", she starts, "I don't think you showed me this only because you wanted to chat about it." The boy takes a deep breath. "I want to meet him. Our uncle." Bianca nods, listening intently. "And... I thought it would be good for all three of us to meet him... and his lover. I already called him, but I couldn't really bring myself to speak... so, I was wondering if, maybe, you could call him for me?"
