Tap-tap-tap
The sound of a boy with white hair sprinting up a set of stairs to reach a door at the top. Wet with sweat, chest on fire, legs writhing in agony... Yet he continues to run.
The door moves closer and closer to being within grasp. The boy's pulse raced as he pushed the door. And then his eyes fell upon her.
A girl with long white hair stood on the roof's edge.
The distraught youngster pleaded, "Please... don't."
The girl jumped away, ignoring the request.
To no avail, the youngster made a dash in her direction in an attempt to capture her.
He was overcome with emotion and began to cry. A flood of tears ran down his cheeks as the world around him collapsed, but then... out of nowhere, a green light arose and banished the night, and then–
“Ugh…” Toga Satria woke up from his dream, “Nightmare. Again. Ugh… I hate it.”
Toga felt an aching pain in his head. “Ouch, what happened? And just where the hell am I?" He gets up on his knees and stands amid glass shards and dust. Looking around, it appears to be a cafe's interior, although a damaged one. A gas smell permeates the area around a wrecked truck that is wedged against the wall.
"That's an unusual touch to decorate a cafe with." Toga gazed at the destroyed truck in front of him. “But, I’ve never been able to follow weird art taste people have these days anyway,” Toga shrugged. He stumbles onto a bike. “My bike? How did it end up here? Weird.”
"How did I get here and fall asleep anyway?" Toga said as he dragged his bike out the door. "I remembered I was on my way home from school and heard… horn?”
Toga reached outdoors and found a crowd gathering staring at something. Not much could tell what people were staring at except several paramedics, cops, and firefighters were hurrying about.
Curios, Toga approached a total stranger and inquired, "Hey, what's going on, man?"
Without turning to gaze at Toga, the stranger is responded. “It was awful, I tell you. A vehicle hit a guy and crashed into the café! This poor youngster probably didn't make it."
Toga's jaw dropped: "Really?" That’s horrible.”
That's a shame, you might say that. The stranger turned to Toga. “A young high schooler kid… just like you, with white hair…. wait a minute….” He is glancing at Toga’s top to the toe. White hair, a high school outfit, dust, and glass bits still adhered to his body. Looks like a mess, but he was practically unhurt.
The stranger is frightened. He sputtered, "But-but-but you are... what... y-you... but, I saw you..."
“You okay, dude? You look pale,” stated Toga as he felt concerned.
However, there is no reaction.
Toga gave a shrug. “You know what? I gotta go. Good day, sir. Goodbye…” backing aside a few of steps, Toga takes 180 and goes away with his bike, leaving the guy who is still astonished.
In the sky, unbeknown to everyone, a little fracture emerges. The chasm opens up, allowing illumination to emanate from inside.
CRACK!
A little girl with a brown hood leaped off the crack and fell on the ground with some force. As she rises up, dust swirls up and she reveals a little ape figurine worn around her neck.
“Did Ocy do it? Did Ocy cross the border?" She murmured something about "Earth-realm" and wondered whether this was it.
When she finally looked up, she noticed two unfamiliar faces staring at her. “Hello, respectable gentlemen. Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Ocy of the kurcaci tribe from a realm far-far away. Here to respectfully request assistance from your ‘Gardeners,'" Ocy said.
Curiously, they offer no feedback and appear distracted. Ocy shakes her small hand confusedly in their direction and says, "Umm... Um... Pardon? Can you hear what Ocy just said?
She then realized that those two strangers had been looking at something under Ocy’s feet, something she unrealized been landed on.
A man was seen lying on the ground with a large bump on his head while glaring angrily at Ocy, who was standing on his body. Screaming, "YOU BRAT WILL PAY!" the man sprang up in anger.
Ocy immediately took off while the scary guy led others to follow him. The scary looking person is unmistakably the Boss, while the other two are his minions. “COME BACK HERE!” Boss yelled.
Running for her life, Ocy has the ape statue in her little palm, which has set off a green light without her knowing it.
Ocy finally came to a halt in front of a wall after a lengthy pursuit. Ocy uttered a piteous "Oh no..." upon seeing that she had reached the end of the alley she had been attempting to escape from her pursuers. That's because she obviously didn't know which way to go.
"Stop fleeing, you little scamp!" Boss said angrily. He clenches his fists, looking down on Ocy's little frame like a bear might a mouse. "What, You think you can simply walk away?"
It was suddenly interrupted by a "Stop right there!" yell.
A young man was seen standing at the mouth of the alley. A ray of sunlight coming from behind him gave him an air of heroic valour. It turns out that he is Toga Satria, the high school student with white hair who rushes to the rescue.
“Who are you supposed to be?” asked Boss.
With annoying smugness, Toga introduced himself, “Beware scumbags ganging up on a little girl, the name’s Toga Satria, and I–.” Toga halted and stared at Boss' forehead, then said, "Wow, that's a large lump on your head. Are you okay, man?”
Boss snapped, “Piss off!”
Suddenly, one of Boss's goons put his arm in front of him and pushed him back, away from Toga. With a whiter than white face, he tried to explain, "Boss, we–should not approach him head-on. He’s too dangerous.”
“What? Dangerous how?” Boss asked.
“I knew him. This man is nothing but trouble. Don't get close!" The goon shouted in a panic, "He is 'The Bringer of Disasters.'"
As Toga walks towards the crowd, cracking his knuckles, A scary aura emits from his back, turning Boss tense. Toga wasn't your typical thin, short high school kid, and he knew it just by seeing his henchman's reaction to him.
Even Ocy is feeling the nerves of the others. But the moniker "The Bringer of Disasters" appears to have far more weight for her than it does for others, causing her considerable unease. "Is this a coincidence?" she said, her hands tightening on the ape totem figurine.
Then the accident happened,
SLIP!
Toga tripped on a piece of banana peel and fell flat on his face.
“Auch…,” Toga groaned. He pulls himself up onto his toes as a cat ambles down the wall, shoving a ceramic flower pot in front of her as she does so, and then--
CRASH!
The heavy pot smashed down on top of Toga's noggin. Toga had once again collapsed on her face.
When it feels like nothing worse could happen anymore, nature has its plan. As Toga lay there helpless, pigeons came in and used him as a toilet, urinating and defecating all over him. As if the beautiful world weren't enough, nature deals a final, disgusting blow.
Everyone was in conflicting thoughts and was silent, except for one person who knew Toga from the beginning. The goon said somberly, in a tone reminiscent of Morgan Freeman: "See... he is indeed The Bringer of Disasters...;
"That's right, to himself."
“What the f–!” Boss swore.
“He had terrible incidents; one would think it was just a tall tale. From getting bitten by dogs regularly to being struck by lightning twice in the same year, some said he was cursed with terrible luck.”
“That’s simply absurd, ain’t it?” said Boss, still in disbelief.
Toga twitched at hearing them gossiping about him. He shook off the stink and grime, his hand tightened, and he yelled,
”AAAARRRRGGGHHH!!"
Toga has a fit of rage and is charging at The Boss and his crew. Toga's anger was evident as he swung his fist furiously towards everyone else in the room other than Ocy. However, it was easy for everyone else to evade his punch.
“Enough!” As Toga launched into another erratic strike, the boss yelled at him. He then promptly struck Toga in the face.
WHAM!
However, Toga didn't even flinch, which was a complete surprise.
As if it were nothing, he cracked a grin. As if he didn’t feel pain?
“What the…,” Boss was astonished. Something is off, yet despite this, he continues to rush Toga with blows.
Angry, he yelled at his goons, "What are you doing? Put him down, you idiots!"
They raced, seized any weapons they could find in the alley, and swung them against Toga’s back and head repeatedly.
Unbelievably, Toga didn't even flinch despite taking such a beating. Everybody looked shocked and bewildered, clearly nervous and afraid. Ocy was blown away by what he saw.
The sinister smirk on Toga's face revealed the words, "My turn." Then he leapt and swung a punch with a broad arc at the terrified Boss.
Bump.
The blow strikes on The Boss's body. Nobody spoke, and the silence was deafening, because... nothing had happened.
In confusion, Boss questioned, “Huh?” He said as he clutched his stomach, "Did–did you just punch me?"
Toga's face flushed with shame, but he kept up the strong exterior. He teased, “Ha! That was nothing but a fluke.” He extended his arm once again and said, "I misjudged my range and strength. This time, I mean it! Here we go!!” Then he begins to strike Boss again…,
Bump.
Boss still felt nothing. “Uh– what are you doing?”
Super embarrassed, "No... it is NOT!" insisted Toga. Then he landed a few more blows and kept going. Still, it was more like being hit by a toddler than anything else; the blows had no effect at all.
“You know what?" Toga, on the verge of tears from embarrassment and exasperation, said, "I-I'm just kidding with you guys, hahaha--."
It was hard to witness, even for Boss and his crew. Although Toga has good endurance, it was not difficult to draw the conclusion that he is lacking in the strength sector.
Everyone was thinking, "This is simply sad."
Inquiring, "What should we do? Just not feeling it anymore," Boss said in a low voice to his minions.
“Should we simply leave?” Responding, the henchman remarked.
“But look at him, still trying." As Boss noticed Toga continuing making strong attempts to pummel his body, he remarked, "I feel awful for him if we simply go."
Everyone stared at each other and then nodded; it seemed they had decided on what to do.
The boss turned around and reached into his pocket. Toga put up a quick defensive since he thought Boss would try to do something deadly. But unexpectedly, it wasn’t anything dangerous but 300k Rupiah notes (about $20)?
The money was presented to Toga gently by the boss.
With the exception of Ocy, who was similarly befuddled, everyone else smiled kindly at Toga.
Toga's shoulder was gently grasped by Boss as he murmured, "Take it, you wretched unhappy soul," before Boss turned to Ocy and apologized, "I'm very sorry if I make you terrified with my blind wrath, little girl."
“Um… it’s okay. "Ocy is sorry, too," Ocy chimed in.
While still astonished, Toga watched as Boss and his henchmen strolled by. They left Toga and Ocy in the alley with soft smiles on their cheeks. Satisfied as though they just done something nice.
Toga is dumbfounded, yet he puts the money in his wallet.
Then, after a moment of reflection, he exclaimed,
"YOU DARE TAKE pity on me, you b*stards! Come back over here!"
Unfortunately, Boss and his henchmen are already too far.
Ocy glanced at Toga and thought, “Ocy doesn’t comprehend what just happened, but at least Ocy realized that this human is harmless.”
As she gazed down at the statue that was hung around her neck, she said, "Glad that in this dimension, 'Bringer of Disasters' have no same connotation as what Ocy's dreaded."
Clenched the statue, she yanked Toga’s hand, “Umm– excuse me, Mr. Toga Satria.”
"Uh huh... Yeah, what's up?" Toga gave a reply. He appears to have cooled off a little.
"You have my sincere appreciation, Mr. Toga Satria." Ocy bowed respectfully to Toga and said, "Thank you very much, sir."
“Help?” When Toga finally figures out what's happened, he's a bit bewildered. "Oh yes, I did, didn't I?
"I kind of forgot what I was doing back then with all of the 'The Bringer of Disaster' stuff," he said. "Can’t believe it; all this time, people talk behind my back! Yes, there are occasions when bad luck strikes, but c'mon!"
When Toga noticed that Ocy was gazing at him, he ceased his complaining and said, "Oh, sorry, where were we?"
Ocy removes her brown hood, exposing her distinctively non-human characteristics, which include her long, pointed ears and her large, dark eyes. Her complexion is light, and she has short brown hair. Simply by taking a glance at her, everyone could tell she was not human.
"If it's not too much trouble, could you kindly assist me save the world from the 'Bringer of Disasters?'"
Outside of this world, in a land far, far away...
THUMP!!
Loud thumping noises between the burning houses in the village.
THUMP THUMP!
The noise, which sounds like footsteps, is getting louder and louder. Growing even closer... To an old man who looks like Ocy, he is badly hurt and can barely stand with his cane. He is surrounded by burned, dead bodies.
THUMP
A tall, white knight loomed over the elderly guy. Full body armor, a helmet covering his face, and a white cloak flapping behind him, the knight slung his bloodied big sledgehammer over his shoulder.
“Where is it?” the knight said.
To this, the elderly man responded with animosity, saying, "Even on my last breath, I won't tell you, Demon. You will not possess his abilities."
The knight grew silent, raised his hammer, and then,
CRUSH
The knight picked up his hammer off of the ground and started walking away while whispering, "You're mistaken, old kurcaci. I’m no demon,
“I am the Hero.”
