A beam of light was shining through the window of her room, causing Brigitte to awaken. She stared at her hand with half-lidded eyes, which laid across the bed. As if she expected something else to be there. Or someone. Who would she wake up to, though? She hugged the extra pillow, holding it close to her chest. Whatever that dream was, made her feel lonely. Like her body yearned for something she couldn’t remember.
The time flashed nine on the clock, surprised she had missed her alarm. She decided to get up before she stayed all day. At least she had nothing important planned. The grumbling of her stomach told she couldn’t stay.
After a long stretch, Brigitte got up and grabbed some clothes, thinking a shower might help her out of her rut. The halls were quiet, which meant she could shuffle to the showers with no one to bother her. Once at her destination, Brigitte put her stuff in the locker. She stripped and stepped into an empty shower stall. The hot water brought a sense of relief as it caressed her body. Brigitte took the time to try the breathing exercises Zenyatta had taught her and it seemed to help. Strangely, her thoughts drifted to Hanzo. It still confused her how much he entered her daydreams. Brigitte did like having small talks with him when they met up in the halls or at meals. Despite that, he was still a tough shell to understand. Nonetheless, it was time to get out.
With her shower done, Brigitte made her way to the kitchen. By now her stomach was rebelling from lack of contents, since she spent more showering than intended. At least she could make something quick, so eggs and toast were the answer.
“Good morning, Brigitte!“
Brigitte looked back over her shoulder, seeing a smaller, chubby woman walk in. “Morning, Mei.“
“You’re up later than usual.“ Mei said with a small chuckle. She walked over, adjusting her lab coat before getting a cup from the cabinet.
“Guess I needed the extra sleep. Want me to make you some eggs?“ Brigitte asked.
“I only came for some coffee. But I should get something to eat.“ Mei said, looking at her watch. “Oh my, it is later than I thought.“
“Another serving coming right up.“ Brigitte said in her more usual energetic tone. “How is your latest research project going?“
“Pretty well, even with a few hiccups.“ Mei said. She reached to get the grounds before starting up to the coffeemaker. “Winston and Echo have been helping a lot. With the new equipment, it’s going so much faster. Speaking of, would it be too much to ask for something?“
“Well, I’m not much of a scientist.“ Brigitte said. She set up two plates for them.
“It’s more that I need some things moved that are too heavy for me.“ Mei said.
“Now that I can do.“ Brigitte said with a chuckle. “But first, food.“
Mei helped set up coffee for the both of them at the closest table. “This looks amazing.“
“Thanks, I had to learn to cook early or Rien would probably starve on the road.“ Brigitte said.
“I am glad you stayed. It’s nice to have some friendly faces again, even if the last time I saw you were just a kid.“ Mei said. Her smile went melancholy for a slight moment. “I know you had your reservations. Think of it as a chance to make Overwatch something that you can be proud to be in.“
“You sound like Rien.“ Brigitte said, eating a large bite, and contemplated Mei’s comment. She could do something this time.
“Well, he is a smart man when it comes to the heart, even if he can be headstrong.“ Mei said with a chuckle.
“You can say that again.“ Brigitte said.
“How are you and Miss Vaswani getting along in the workshop?“
Brigitte swallowed her bite, thinking for a moment. “It’s hard to tell, since she’s quiet. Though I have no problem with her, I just hope maybe we can be friends. Might take time and if not, then I hope we can work together smoothly. Except papa isn’t making it easy.“
“I guess they would be on different aspects of personality and work.“
“Plus, he’s never really liked Vishkar and their ethics. I’ve had to be the awkward middleman a few times.“ Brigitte said, rubbing her forehead.
“Oh no. I hope it clears up. Even with the new engineer, that should arrive in a few weeks.“
“We’re getting another one?“
“Yeah, Winston says he’s from Australia and has quite a reputation. I believe his name is Jamison Fawkes.“
“Never heard of him, but hey, the more the merrier.“
———
“You sure like to talk in your sleep.“
Hanzo groaned as his eyes cracked open. The bright light forced them to close again. A woman with a thick accent was speaking to him. He tried once more to open his eyes. It was blurry at first, but a figure finally formed. A woman dressed in blue and gray sniper gear knelt in front of him. Her hood covered her braided gray hair. Though what caught his glance was her eyepatch and Horus tattoo. It was her. Ana Amari.
“Finally awake.“
“So you are alive, Ana Amari.“ Hanzo said in a mumble. His head throbbed like hell where the gun hit him.
“Last time I looked I was.“ Ana said, leaning on her rifle. “So, from what I can see. You don’t seem to be a talon, but I wouldn’t brush it off. Certainly not one of the usual gang members. Unless you’re one of Mistress Hisano’s lotuses. Though I wonder what brings you out this far? She learned not to send people here.”
“He’s the lost Hanzo Shimada. His arm says it all. Thought you were all gone by now.“ Jack said.
Suddenly, a fist grabbed Hanzo by the hair, yanking it back, causing Hanzo to growl. He looked up to see Soldier 76 hovering over him, sneering through the gray beard.
“No sense roughing him up anymore. At least until I hear his reason for being here, Jack.“ Ana said.
Soldier 76, now revealed as Jack, let go of his grip with a rough shove before leaning against the wall. “One wrong answer and he’s gone.“
“So, why are you here?“ Ana asked. Patiently watching Hanzo’s next move.
There was no sense in beating around the bush. They would either believe him or not, so he uttered only one word at first. “Overwatch.“ Hanzo said, noticed the slight change in Ana’s expression. “Because I know you are the former captain, Ana Amari. If I guess correctly, you are Commander Morrison.“
“That man is dead, just like how Overwatch should stay.“ Jack scoffed.
“You’re a smart one.“ Ana said. “But I would keep that between us.“
“You’ll either get rid of me or believe me. I have nothing to lose.“
Ana frowned. The way he carelessly said it made her disappointed. Then again, the Shimadas weren’t exactly known for being sensible. Much like someone she commanded.
“So, punk. Where is this proof?“ Jack asked.
“There is a small container in my bag.“ Hanzo continued, ignoring Jack’s tone behind the comment. He figured focusing on Ana would wield better results.
Ana stood up and went over to a corner that had Hanzo’s bag. It took her a moment before she carefully took out the box Winston had given him.
She said something under her breath as she held up a folded old, worn photo. After turning it over, she looked at the back. A hint of a smile formed on her face. “You actually remembered, you big lug. All these years.“
Hanzo stayed quiet to see what would happen next. Curious about what would be on the photo that changed her expression so easily. He chanced a look at Jack, who seemed to sigh silently as Ana put the photo in her pocket.
“Drink this.“ Ana said, undoing the ties before handing a bottle and a familiar communicator. “Then contact your ride. We’ll head out at dusk. If you are being true, then nothing will go wrong.“
“If it’s a trap, you’ll deal with me.“ Jack said.
———
Tracer waited by the door of the transport, squinting to see anything in the dim lighting. She had kept the lights of the vehicle low to avoid any unwanted attention. Glancing at her watch, Tracer noticed that Hanzo’s arrival would be any minute now. She honestly didn’t think he’d be back this soon, but she believed him when he found the mission objectives. If it was true, they had found the captain. Tracer allowed a small smile. She really hoped it was true.
“There you are.“ Tracer said once she saw Hanzo walk out into the clearing. There were two people that were trailing him closely, but it was the woman that made her eyes go wide. “Captain, it really is you.“
“Lena, it’s good to see you again. It’s been far too long.“ Ana said. A huff of breath came out as Tracer suddenly enveloped her in a hug.
“Reinhardt is going to be so happy when we get back.“ Tracer said. She backed up and squinted at Jack. “I take it that is our other pickup.“
“He’s with me and he’s coming with us.“ Ana said, stepping into the vehicle with the others following. “We can continue our chat in a more secure location.”
Tracer glanced at Hanzo, who gave a nod in agreement as he passed by. Whatever happened to him, she’d ask later. “Well, if everyone is here, get buckled in and I’ll get us home in a jiffy.“
Hanzo secured himself in a seat across from the other two passengers. He felt the glare Jack gave through the visor. It was going to be a long trip to Watchpoint.
