Kai awoke to the soft murmuring of ducted air conditioning above him. He was resting in a very comfortable queen bed. He wasn't sure of the thread count of the sheets, but they were much more comfortable than anything he was used to.
When he attempted to move, he noticed a biting sensation in his right wrist, a cannula... Hooked up to a bag of something on a stand.
He raised his head in the darkness, observing he was surrounded by what appeared to be a spacious well furnished bedroom. He looked to his right, noticing a bedside drawer and lamp. When feeling around for a switch, it turned on with touch alone, causing him to turn away squinting momentarily.
As his eyes adjusted, he noticed a very clean and clinical decor, white walls and furniture, a large en suite off to his left, and in front of him was a cabinet below a large widescreen television. Turning back, he noted the IV stand beside him and checked to see what on earth he was being given. He relaxed a little when he noted it was just saline.
Deciding he should try to investigate his symptoms, Kai winced as he touched his head, which he only now realised was bandaged. He also realised he appeared to be sporting a mild headache. He attempted to stand up, struggling when feeling pain down his right leg, but steadied himself and managed to slowly stand. He was also wearing a hospital gown. So he was in a hospital? Looking about, he saw a clock on the wall, which if correct, told him it was about 3:20 in the morning...
With IV stand in hand, he found the switch for the en suite and saw himself in the mirror for the first time since...
"Arrggh."
He winced in pain when trying to remember. He... Did he suffer a stroke or a seizure or something? He wasn't sure-
Eeuuughh
He had to stop thinking about it for now as the pain and a little nausea began to roll in.
Moving into the en suite, he took a closer look at the mirror. He noticed crusty lines of blood running down his face and bandages concealing some of his hair that appeared to be applying a pressure pad to the right side of his head.
On the vanity were a couple of clear plastic glasses, a bottle of champagne and a note with 4 tablets in a container sitting on top. He carefully moved the tablets out of the way and raised the note to the light. In beautiful flowing handwriting, he read the following:
Dear
Mr Fukami
Please be assured you are now safe. You had a bad fall before leaving and struck your head, giving yourself a pretty bad concussion, but our doctors made sure of your stability and even conducted CT scans. We can assure you, there is no bleeding to the brain and you are expected to make a full recovery. You can find the scans on the cabinet below the TV in your bedroom.
Whilst I understand you may be distressed at this point in time, I would request you do not let this incident sully the good news I would like to deliver to you.
Congratulations Mr Fukami! I would like to inform you that you have been successful in your application! Welcome to the team!
I apologise for the lack of personnel to attend to you if you wake later this evening, please feel free to take the medication I'll leave on top of this note. Two of paracetamol, a sleeping aid and an anti-inflammatory should get you through comfortably until morning.
Mr Toki will be in at 9:30am to check on you and bring you everything you need, so just get some rest in the meantime and relax.
Regards
Akane Takahashi
Kai pauses, irritated at his situation.
...relax? How can I relax when I can't even remember what-
"Ohhhhhhh"
The headache and nausea hit him again. Thinking was hurting too much at the moment, so he decided to take the pills and wash the remaining blood off his face. It took a little longer than he expected, but once he swapped to using warm water, it scrubbed off a lot more easily.
He bent down for one last rinse and looked up
again, freezing for a moment, a look of terror in his eyes as he saw
it in the reflection. A giant shadowy looking monster of a
wolf, standing in the darkness, red hungry eyes leering at him.
Then it was gone. A trick of the light? His heart-rate had skyrocketed in that moment and his breathing had sped up tremendously. He shook his head, then calmly made his way back to bed, making his way under the warmth of the covers.
Part of him felt like something much worse was goin on, what with the nightmares and everything, but if he hit his head, he couldn't be sure.
"Yeah, you're an asshole"
He whispered to himself in confidence.
She's probably really nice... I think... After all that's happened.
With that he blacked out once more, drifting into a dreamless sleep.
