A loud rumbling noise suddenly shook me awake. It took my brain a few seconds to fully wake up and take in my surroundings. To my somewhat relief nothing as far as I could see was different from before, I was still in the dilapidated house, sitting beside the fireplace. Because I had no idea how much time had passed I quickly looked up through the hole in the roof and saw that the sun was still high up in the sky, giving me the certainty that I most likely not sleeped for more then an hour.
With the strange sound still ringing in my ears I carefully stood up, while making sure to listened for any kind of movement, but to my relive it was dead silent. Before I hadn't actually really noticed how quiet it was but now that I was completely alone and was able to focus fully on my surroundings, it real got to me. Just like usually there was no distant noises of people going about their day, no chirping birds, hell not even any insects buzzing in the warm summer air.
I shook my head when I remember how afraid I had been the first few times I had been in this apocalyptic world, that I now knew was in fact the future. Back then when my powers first manifested the absence of all living beings and the lack of noise had really freaked me out, but over ten years later I almost kinda appreciate it.
It was strange but it gave me the opportunity to be alone and to do what ever I wanted, something that I otherwise wouldn't have been able to experience while incarcerated in the asylum. Also considering my last two trips to the future that hadn't been so devoid of life, I hoped that it being so quiet also meant that I wouldn't have to deal with any nasty surprises this time.
I took a deep breath and tried to tell myself that there was nothing out there, when suddenly a deep, rumbling roar broke the silence.
"Fuck! You had to jinx it!" I hissed under my breath and pressed my back against the crumbling brick wall.
The roar had come from a little bit further way but it was still way to close for comfort.
Paniked I closed my eyes and tried to concentrated, hoping that maybe now that I had rested my power would finally work. But when I tried to focus my brain reminded me of something, or rather someone. For a moment I contemplated if I should just try to get back without the blond but then my conscious got the better of me and I decided that it wouldn't be okay to leave Peter behind, even if that meant to put myself in danger.
Because of my experiences with such quiet surroundings I knew that any noise I did would sound a hundred times louder, so I carefully sneaked over to the basement door and peaked into the darkness. I couldn't make out a lot but I did see Peter's flashlight in the far corner of the large space and also a very small amount of sunlight that was seeping through the basements hatch door. Shit is it locked? I questioned and calculated how likely it was that the damned thing could break through it.
With the door that lead to the outside right in between the stairs and where Peter most likely was, my fear of going down there, intensified even more.
"Peter, come here!" I wisper yelled, hoping it to be loud enough for him to hear me but not so loud that the thing outside would hear me, but my dismay I got nothing in return. "There is something out there." I said a little bit louder then before but once again I got no response.
Was he even still down there? I thought and took a step back from the door but then something move in front of the flashlight, blocking it completely and making the basement even darker.
I took a deep breath, gathered up all my courage and then went into the darkness, while telling myself that this was stupid and that this was exactly how people in horror movies got themselve killed.
With shaking knees I slowly descended down the creaking, wooden stairs.
When I reached the bottom of the stairs I waited for a moment, so my eyes could adjust to the darkness. Finally able to make out Peter's siluet in the dimly light, I saw he was standing next to a bunch of cardboard boxes and holding something in his hands seemingly, completely absorbed in it. Carefully I walked over to him and tapped him on the shoulder to get his attention but he only quickly glanced at me and then continued reading the faded, yellowish newspaper that he was holding.
I opened my mouth to tell him that we had to get out of here, when I noticed from the corner of my eye a shadow passing by the crack of the hatch door. Scared half to death I held my breath and slowly backed away without daring to take my eyes off the hatch for even a second.
"Peter, there is something out there" I whispered but he didn't understood my warning. Instead of staying quiet he angrily yelled back, "Not now!"
His booming voice echoed through the dark room, attracting the attention of the thing outside.
Shit! Why the fuck can't he just listen to me?! We are so fucking dead! I thought and saw that the shadow was once again infront of the door, blocking the light that had been shining through it. My heart began to race and my body tremble in fear of what was about to happen.
A loud thump, followed by furious scratching noises finally also manged to catch Peter's attention. He spun around in the same moment as another loud thump came from the hatch door.
To our horror we saw a dent forming, indicating that the hatch was beginning to give way under the beasts weight.
"Shit, We need to leave! Now!" I screamed, grabbed his arm and dragged him after me towards the stairs.
We had almost made it to the bottom of the stairs when suddenly the sound of the hatch bursting open, behind us, reached our ears.
Fuck, fuck, fuck!
I hadn't dared to look back and had no idea what that thing was but I also didn't intend to finding it out. Paniked I tried to pull Peter up the stairs but he wasn't budging. Paniked I tried again and again but he just wouldn't move.
"What the hell?" The blond breathlessly mumbled and shook of my hand.
Don't look back! Don't you fucking dare! I told myself but my curiosity once again got the better of me.
Slowly and with shaking knees I turned around to see what made Peter freeze up in shock like that. At first I couldn't believe what I saw but when my brain was finally comprehend what that thing was, my heart lodged itself in my throat.
Even though I had never seen anything like it, I could still tell that it was some sort of huge cat. And from the looks of it a really mean and aggressive one at that.
It's large yellow eyes glowed in the dimly lit caller and from it's enormously long canines, that were protruding from it's mouth drool dripped onto the concrete floor.
The beast suddenly jumped towards us.
"Fucking RUN!" I screamed at the top of my lungs but it was already to late. It's large body tackled both of us the ground and before I could even really react to what was going on, the beast was attacking Peter. At first he was able to fend off the monstrous cat by kicking against it's snout, but when it attacked again just a second later it managed to get a hold of him. It's massive jaws closed around his left leg. The sound of flesh being torn apart, crushing bones and Peter's desperate screams for help filled the air.
Helplessly I held onto him for dear life and to try to pull him away from the beast but then I saw a screwdriver laying on the ground just a few feet away. Quickly I rushed over to it, picked it up and then without even thinking, threw myself at the big cat. I stabbed it over and over again, it's blood making it hard to hold my makeshift weapon. But I just continued until it finally let go of his leg.
Wounded the beast stumbled away, giving me enough time to grab a profusely bleeding Peter. Desperately I tried to pull him up the stairs but with him being much taller and heavier then me, I could barely even move him at all. A loud growl drew my attention back to the thing. It's yellow eyes were on now me. I grabbed Peter around his waist and tried again to pull him out of reach of the monster when suddenly it pounced forwards.
Inches before it's massive teeth could sink into my head I felt a unmistakable dizziness and the world around us started to melt away. My power had finally activated itself and had brought us back to the present in the blink of an eye. I looked around, making sure that the cat hadn't traveled back in time with us. When I saw no sign of it I breathed a sigh of relief.
But the moment of peace was short lived. Peter ground in pain, reminding me that he had gotten hurt. Worried I looked down and noticed that his face had become incredibly pale and that he was struggling to keep his eyes open. When my eyes wondered further down I saw that his leg looked like it had gone through a meat grinder, blood seeping from the wounds. Fuck, there was even bone sticking out of his flesh in some places.
"Peter! NO! Shit stay with me!"
"Four."
"What?!"
"Four..."
"What do you mean?!"
"No no no! Keep your eyes open! Come on! Please!"
