“What was I thinking?” Wilt chided himself as he paced back and forth. As soon as he had heard the noise downstairs he had slipped out the window and down the drainpipe. From the street he could hear people gathered; they whispered and muttered to each other and Wilt couldn’t help his curiosity. Even as a kid he always had the habit of listening at doors and peeking through keyholes. He doubled back and snuck around to listen in. They were all talking about Lukas, that the sheriff had come to arrest him.
“About time,” sneered a rotund woman, whose opinion was met with murmurs of agreement and nods from some others around her. But not all were so unkind.
“I can’t believe it,” another woman, with kinder eyes, spoke. “Even with the things people say about him, he had always been kind to me.”
It seemed the crowd was of mixed opinions. Wilt slowly edged in closer, he wanted to hear more but his foot slipped in the rubble. He caught his balance easily enough but the slip made more noise than Wilt was comfortable with. Before anyone could notice him he backed away, towards the forest.
It had been a bad idea to come here in the first place, during broad daylight, in the middle of the town and without even checking the area. Fortunately it seemed that no one had seen him, but that wasn’t his main concern at the moment.
“How could I have been so stupid as to tell him my name?” Wilt raked his fingers through his hair. The problem being that he wasn’t thinking. He had just wanted to see Lukas again after escaping the library, hoping to understand these dreams. And then once Wilt did see him all he could think about was what it would be like to kiss him.
“Uh well, I guess that won’t be happening now that I abandoned him to get arrested. Though maybe if he rats me out and I get arrested too we could be lucky enough to get adjoining cells.” He grinned like an idiot at the idea.
But that wouldn’t be happening; Wilt was going back for his gear and getting the hell out of here.
