Sodapop’s POV
__________________
I was a sobbing mess when I found out Sandy did not read my letter. I loved her so much, it broke me, and I couldn’t take it anymore. Darryl and Ponyboy tried to comfort me, but it wasn’t working because they didn’t understand the heartbreak this gave me. I needed comfort from someone else besides family. Steve Randle.
“Ponyboy…just get Steve over here h-he should be at the DX…” I said through my tears. He could only nod and tell Darry he was leaving. Pony dragged Two-Bit with him out the door. I saw them running, so I knew this should be quick. Time was moving so slowly that it felt like hours.
Glory, why couldn’t her family understand. I would’ve helped her cause I loved her so much. But no, she just decided to go and leave me. I sobbed even harder. Darryl was still there with an arm wrapped around me and patted my back softly. I just leaned against him while I sat there. I could barely get any words out. My words slurred, and I felt light-headed.
I have no idea how long I was sobbing before Steve came. As soon as I heard that front door open, I turned and saw Steve. He looked at me and ran over, pulling me into his arms. I could only cling to him and shut my eyes tightly. “Don’t worry Soda I gotcha.. You’ll be alright buddy…” He said softly. Darryl left the room, and Steve just stood there with his arms wrapped around me protectively.
He sobbed into his chest. “Steve…” I sobbed out slowly. I struggled to breathe because of all the tears. “Shh Soda, don’t speak it’ll make it worse. Just focus on me..” I only nodded and kept sobbing. I clung to him, and then I must’ve fallen asleep cause when I woke up, I was lying on my bed. I frowned, not feeling Steve’s embrace, so I thought he must’ve gone home. But when I turned to look at my bedside, I saw Steve there sleeping in a chair. I felt some relief wash over me. I got up slowly, stumbled over to him, and shook his shoulder.
“Steve…Steve wake up.” I said softly. He woke up slowly and yawned. “Mh.. hey Soda..” He looked up at me and grinned before he stretched and got up. “You feeling a little better buddy?” I nodded and smiled, hugging him tightly. “Only cause you were here Steve. Thanks, Steve.” I said and then let go of him. “No problem buddy, I’m just here for you whenever you need me.” He grinned, and I couldn’t help but feel my heart flutter.
“You’ve always been here for me Steve and I’m so glad for that,” I said, feeling my face heat up. Steve just chuckled. “I’m your best friend, we’re here for each other man.” He patted my back. “It’s only 10:45? I thought it was already morning.” I said, surprised, while I looked at the clock. “How about this, we go to Buck Merrill’s Bar and get drunk off our asses,” Steve said, grinning. “I don’t know Steve, Darry might find out and he’ll slap the shit outta me,” I said nervously.
“He’ll have to get through me, and besides I’m the one dragging you into this so I’ll be the one in more trouble,” Steve remarked. I nodded slowly. “That’s true,” I said and then looked at Steve. “Alright, let’s go.” Steve smiled and wrapped an arm around me. We snuck out of the house and started heading to Bucks. We ran for most of it, not wanting any trouble with the Socs who could be scoping around the area looking for greasers hanging out at nighttime.
We walked inside after we got Buck to let us in. We were only allowed to go in cause Buck told Dallas to supervise us. Though Dally told us we could do whatever and that he would be upstairs resting if we needed anything. We nodded and went to the bar to get ourselves a couple of drinks. I never drank cause I never felt the need to, but tonight I decided to drink. ‘There was no shame in trying it,’ I thought.
I took the first shot, and it felt like a buzzing in my throat. “Easy there, take it slow Soda,” Steve said, patting my back while he drank his shot. “Has a buzz to it right?” He said, grinning. I nodded and took another shot. I leaned against Steve hugging his arm. “Steve I feel dizzy…” My words slurred, and Steve grinned a little.
“Maybe you drank too much, don’t have any more.” His voice sounded weird to me. It sounded so hot…My face heated up as I shut my eyes tightly. ‘What am I thinking he’s my best friend!’ I mentally screamed at myself while I lay there. I heard a shot glass put down, and then Steve got off his chair and helped me up.
“Let’s get Dallas to take us back to your house.” I heard him say. He got me up the stairs to where Dallas said he was. “Damn Soda you look wasted. I’m guessing you’re gonna need a right.” Dallas said, getting off the bed and getting his jacket on. I could only groan from the buzzing pain in my head. Steve got me into Buck’s car, and the whole time, I spent just staring at Steve and hugging his arm tightly.
“Gotten clingy since what happened?” Dallas asked, I didn’t know who he was talking to, but Steve put his response in for me. “I guess so, glory his grip is strong.” Steve’s voice was like a drug to me. I couldn’t help but be intoxicated by it. I could only grin, and soon I had moved into his lap. Steve didn’t seem to mind, so I stayed there. I don’t know how but time rushed by me cause Dallas parked.
The alcohol’s effect on me started to screw up cause all I remembered was my time with Sandy again, it made me sad, but I tried to forget about it. Steve got me out of the car and back to the bedroom. It was around midnight by that time, and I realized that Ponyboy was sleeping on the couch, but I didn’t care at the moment. I was frowning when I sat down on the bed, and Steve noticed almost immediately. “Soda what’s wrong?” He asked, turning to me. I sighed. “Just thinking about her again…”
“Soda is there anyways I can make you feel better? I seriously hate seeing you like this it bums me out.” Steve said as he frowned as well and wrapped his arm around me. I leaned against him and gripped onto his clothes. “I just can’t seem to forget her Steve. I want to forget her so bad already because every memory just makes it worse for me to live on.” I said seriously.
“Don’t say something like that! Boy, I wouldn’t know what to do if you were dead Soda. There’s gotta be something I can do to make you feel better…” Steve said, worried while he made me look up at him. The look in his eyes…the way he cared about me and comforted me. I was comfortable around him, and I didn’t care what Steve did. I loved how he took care of me. No…I didn’t just love that. I loved everything about Steve Randle.
I felt my face heat up. Steve kept talking about how much he cared about me. I loved him, and it was clear to see now. His voice was so intoxicating again, and Steve was all that was clouding my mind now. I wanted him to stay with me and comfort me. I want him to kiss me, and I want him to…I knew what I wanted from him. If he wanted to help, then glory, he was gonna help me.
