“I don’t fucking care, Sparrow! He got hurt! Why’re you laughing? Nothing about this situation is funny.”
I woke up to the sound of Damien’s voice. My eyes peeked open, slowly getting used to the sudden brightness of the room. The blurriness soon faded leaving me to focus on the ceiling. I was wrapped comfortably in fluffy white blankets, surrounded by Damien's forresty scent. I resisted the urge to fall back to sleep, sitting up and glancing around the sage green apartment flat. A wet towel had fallen from my forehead and into my hands, my wrists and knees were wrapped in bandages. I took a deep breathe, trying to recollect my memories from last night. So, this scary dude came out of no where, shoving me into a wall. Something about a mutt? Damien? And then he tried to- my hand shot up to my neck, feeling for a wound but there was none. I let out a sigh of relief. Was he a vampire? He said something about feasting on humans. All this thinking was only making my splitting headache worse. I groaned.
“Fix it or I’m telling Father about this.” I heard Damien say. A minute later he stepped out of the bathroom wearing a very annoyed expression. However, his face softened when his eyes met mine. He froze for a moment before filling a glass of water and walking over to me. “How are you feeling?” He asked, handing the glass to me. I drank half of it while Damien put his palm to my forehead. “Looks like your fever went down.” He smiled lightly.
“I feel fine. Just a little sore and I have a headache.”
Damien leaned down, scooping up multiple bottles of meds from the night table. “I was looking for stuff that’ll help with fevers and pain but there were so many options and weird labels. I didn’t know which one to get so, I just got them all.” He smiled shyly. “Werewolves don’t really get sick and take medicine. We just push through it and it’s normally gone in a few hours.”
I couldn’t help but laugh at the absurd amount of bottles that he was struggling to hold. A few of them slipped out of his hold, falling to the floor only causing him to fumble more. I chuckled as I looked through the collection, picking what I needed and swallowing a small pill with the rest of the water. Damien watched my every move very carefully. He put down the rest of the bottles and picked up the one I just used, inspecting it carefully. Probably making a mental note to get it next time. I held back a laugh. “So, what exactly happened yesterday? How did you know to come find me?” I asked, not being able to hold my curiosity any longer.
Damien shifted his weight uncomfortably, giving me a sad and apologetic look. He was about to answer until a loud growl erupted from my stomach, surprising us both. “Hungry?” Damien teased. I could feel my cheeks turning a crimson red. “Let’s get you something to eat and then I’ll explain everything, okay?”
Damien made me a plate of scrambled eggs and bacon with a side of assorted fruits. “Did you go out and buy this? For me?”
Damien’s tail started wagging excitedly but his expression looked shy. “Yeah. After I brought you back here and took care of your wounds I figured you’d want something to eat when you woke up so I-“ His voice broke off into a low mutter.
“You what?” I encouraged him to keep going.
“I researched what humans would want for breakfast and how to make it. Figured you wouldn’t want steak.” He rubbed the back of his neck.
I let out a startled laugh.
“Don’t laugh. I’ve never taken care of a human before and I’ve been sort of disconnected from your world for years.” Damien scoffed.
“Thank you, Damien.” I smiled at him. His tail started to wag violently, making a thump sound every time it hit the couch.
“So, what happened last night?” I started.
Damien took a deep breathe, “remember when I told you about how other beings will look for weaknesses in other’s to gain power?” I nodded. “Okay well I think thats what could be happening. And since you’re more of a weaker species you’re easier to prey on. They could use you to get to me. You basically have a target on your back. But don’t worry I’ll figure which group is after you and stop them.”
“I’m sorry- what? I have a target on my back? And group? A group of vampires are after me?” I panicked.
“Ah I actually don’t know if it’s just vampires I’m pretty sure it is though. Whoever attacked you yesterday was a vampire since I couldn’t pick up their scent. Vampires don’t really have a scent to them.”
“Oh my god I could have a group of supernatural beings after me? Right now?” I asked, in disbelief. Damien nodded guiltily. “How close are you to figuring out who’s after me- you- us?”
“Uhm I know that there is at least one vampire.” Damien looked like a kicked puppy.
“I’m gonna die.” I let out a dazed laugh, pinching the bridge of my nose.
“I’m sorry.”
“What- why are you already giving your condolences? Damien! You’re not very reassuring right now.” I shook him.
“Listen, I had a feeling something like this would happen. Luckily I had my sister cast a protection spell on you not too long ago. It was meant to shield you from any harm that could come to you but she fucked it up on purpose to mess with me.” Damien rolled his eyes. “I had her fix it so now any supernatural beings shouldn’t be able to hurt you.”
“You have a sister?”
“Yeah. My Father took her in when she was very young. Her biological parents were performing dark magic, which is very illegal, they ended up losing their minds and going on a rampage. They were killed for their crimes, leaving Sparrow alone at the age of four and my Father decided to take her in. Originally it was for his own benefit, having a witch on your side is great especially since their services are normally very expensive, but as time went on he grew to love her like his own child. I think she sofened him up a bit too. She's two years older than me.”
“So, she’s a witch?”
“Yes. Now even though you have a protection spell, they could still kidnap you they just can’t hurt you. As soon as one of them touches you, Sparrow and I will be alerted and be able to track where you are so you don’t have to worry. Once I figure out who’s behind this I’ll be able to easily stop them.”
“I thought you said things like this don’t happen anymore.” I rested my head in my hands.
“Uh yeah well about that..
