I exhale before unlocking my front door. I didn't want my dad to know what I was doing just before "I am home" I say as I enter the house
I was getting rid of my shoes when my dad got out of the kitchen while cleaning his hands on a tea towel "Welcome home honey, you're just right on time for dinner. Go wash your hands and come eat"
"Alright!"
--------------------------------------
"So how was your day?" my dad asks serving me the shrimp gratin and the spinach salad he had just made
"Great, Isabella is sad because she got dumped but she will be in brighter spirits soon" It wasn't unusual for me to share those kinds of things with my dad. He knew her very well and she didn't care one bit
"Oh? Is that why you're coming home late?" he questions innocently
I consider lying but my dad and Isabella and her family were too close, any lie would be quickly discovered, making the situation really suspicious
"No, I saw her around lunch and in the afternoon" I answer
"And who were you with then?" he inquires
"I was at the library" I lie
"With who?"
"Alone"
"All the evening?"
"Yes"
My dad seems doubtful
"What? " I say defensively
"Nothing" he smiles teasingly before changing the subject "Are you going to your mom's this weekend?"
My parents were divorced when I was a baby but they weren't on bad terms. I live with my dad and go to see my mom once in a while
"I don't think so, I am planning to spend time with Isabella, maybe have a sleepover at her house" I answer, glad about this change of subject
"And with whose permission?" he tries to seem firm and aggravated but I knew it was a pretence to tease me
"Yours! I am asking you now" I smile, my dad wouldn't take it badly
He just hummed in response
"So? I promise I won't go back too late"
"Depends, is it the truth or a lie to spend 'some time alone in a library'" It was now his turn to smile at me
"It's true! You could ask her mom if you don't believe me"
"I am sure Marta would cover you up" he crosses his arms on his chest
"But there's nothing to cover up!" I exclaim
"Right, like with this evening at the library" he rolls his eyes "I guess you're not aware it's actually closed for renovations?"
Oh shit. I didn't know that. I opened my mouth to answer something then closed it.
Shit. Shit. Shit. I couldn't say it was another library because there is only one around us and if I change my location of the afternoon it will confirm his doubts.
The longer I was thinking, the longer my dad was staring at me knowingly, the redder I knew I was becoming. This is torture
"So what if I wasn't there?" I mumble defeated and really embarrassed
"Nothing, but don't lie to me. I am teasing you but it doesn't bother me if you have a boyfriend, just do tell me I want to be sure you're safe" he continues
"I don't have a boyfriend!" I shout, it was one thing to admit I wasn't at the library but another thing to say I had a boyfriend-
Which wasn't true
Maybe
"Don't bother, I know you were with a boy this evening and I even know what you did" my dad calmly tells me
"What we did??" I turned my head so quickly I hurted my neck, what the hell?
"Eating ice creams" my dad answers seemingly amused by my reaction
"Oh right-" I answer lamely and relieved
"I love you son but you can't lie, you're so obvious" my dad laughs "Just so you know the library is actually opened" he smirks at me
I took a second to register what he was saying before I gasp hard "WHAT?"
