I’m standing in my living room, the light of the afternoon sun coming in through the window and grazing over Damien’s sleeping face. Turns out it wasn’t a dream. A shirtless half-wolf, Damian, is sleeping soundly on my couch, which is very clearly too small for his large figure. And he’s wearing a pair of my sweatpants that are two sizes too small for him. I already took a few minutes to freak out and now I’m just staring at the beautiful werewolf in front of me. Werewolves are real. Does that mean vampires are real too? Oh my god, no wonder Damien hated vampire books! Aren’t they like sworn enemies? I started pacing, getting lost in my thoughts.
“You okay?” Damien sat up, startled.
“Oh, I’m sorry. Did I wake you? I was seriously trying not to explode because you can sense emotions right? I didn’t want to scare you if I started getting too excited about all this but I guess I failed at it. I have so many questions and more are just accumulating by the second.”
“Jesus- breathe Kayden. How is it even possible to talk that fast.”
“Sorry sorry.” I laughed, hugging myself. Suddenly a wave of calm hit me and I almost felt sleepy again.
“Better. Shall we start that interrogation then?” Damien pat the empty spot on the couch next to him. His ears were perked up and he seemed more relaxed than he was yesterday. I went and grabbed two glasses of water before sitting down next to him. Damien chugged the entire glass in one go.
“So, you’re a werewolf?” I started.
“Yep.”
“And that time in the forest, it was you chasing me?”
“It was a full moon that day. I really didn’t mean to startle you. I didn’t even know you were there until I smelled your scent but you had already noticed me and started panicking. I wanted to make sure you got out of the forest safely so I followed you. Then I smelled blood and panicked.”
“What do I smell like?” I asked, curiosity probably written all over my face.
Damien’s head tilted up slightly like he was sniffing the air. “You’re scent is really sweet. Kind of like honey and vanilla.”
“Oh. Does my scent bother you? You said you weren’t a fan of sweets.”
“About that. I actually can’t have things like cake. It’ll make my stomach upset. I can’t have a lot of things actually, it’s bad for my wolf side. So no, I honestly quite like your uh your scent.” Damien’s cheeks were rose-colored. “It’s the nicest I’ve ever smelled.” He muttered, so quietly that if I were even slightly farther away I would have missed it.
I decided to change the subject for the sake of Damien, “so what happened to my knee that day? I don’t even have so much as a scar.”
“Ah uhm. My saliva has a healing enzyme in it. So I- licked your knee and carried you back to your apartment, in my human form of course. I had a bag of clothes nearby.”
“That’s both gross and amazing at the same time. So, that's how you healed last night? Why didn't you heal yourself sooner?”
“Ah um I was panicking and wasn’t thinking straight. Ended up getting too weak to move and heal properly.” His ears pulled back.
“What happened?”
“We’ll get into that at another time. It’s a long story and I don’t want to scare or overload you with information.” Damien rubbed the back of his neck.
“Okay… this is so freaky. What else don’t I know about werewolves? Do you guys travel in packs? How many are there?”
“Sure, in like ancient times.” Damien laughed. “Nowadays, theirs what you would call an alpha in every town that has werewolves in it, usually they take on leadership positions, for example, mayor or a CEO of a company. And then there are stronger alphas, called the council. They take roles like presidents or kings and queens. Almost every president has been a werewolf.”
“For real?” I was baffled.
“Yea. There’s a good amount of werewolves living amongst humans. We only have about 30 in Riverstone though. But we don’t like to meet up or anything unless there's an emergency. Some of them I’ve never talked to before and they're free to move to another town if they want.”
“So, wait, is your Dad the alpha of Riverstone?”
Damien was suddenly shy, rubbing the back of his neck like always. “Yea.”
“What would that make you?”
“The next alpha.”
“Dude that’s awesome. You’re going to be like the ruler of Riverstone werewolves.” I chuckled. Damien just rolled his eyes.
“If werewolves exist, does that mean other things like vampires exist?”
“Yes, they do exist. And they’re definitely assholes. Very edgy as well.” He scoffed.
I couldn’t help but laugh. “So, what’s your obsession with fantasy books? You seem to be living in one.”
“I find them hilarious. Humans have no idea what they’re talking about. They just make up random stuff about us and make it sound factual.” Damien chuckled.
“This is crazy. I can’t believe I’m talking to an actual werewolf. And vampires exist. Are there vampires in Riverstone?”
“Hm yeah a few. Although most vampires live in ‘vampire only’ towns to avoid…well, harming humans. The government supplies them with blood to keep the peace between them and everyone else. By the way, no one can know about me or just the existence of werewolves and supernatural creatures in general. I could actually get in trouble for this. Humans aren’t supposed to know unless…”
“Unless?”
“Unless… a werewolf um you know decides to get together with a human.” Damien’s cheeks turned a light pink color.
“Oh.” I could feel my face heating up.
Damien covered his nose, “new topic, yeah? Any more questions?”
I have a ton regarding what happened last night but Damien didn’t seem like he wanted to talk about it so I’ll wait for him to be ready. Instead, I decided to change the topic to the thing that has been bugging me since yesterday. “About our conversation in the cafe…”
“Oh right, that. I guess you knowing about what I am makes this easier to explain…”
