Evelyn leaned against the light pole, staring at her lock screen and awaiting a text from her date. Although she looked perfectly calm on the outside, she was overflowing with nervousness. She really wanted this to go well. She and Emma have been texting back and forth ever since they met. Evelyn didn’t want to get too ahead of herself but she seriously thought this girl was absolute perfection and therefore deserved the best. Evelyn even bought a brand-new outfit just for tonight. She was wearing a black turtleneck tucked into black and red plaid skinny jeans and a pair of heeled combat boots along with bright red lipstick to pull it all together.
A ding soon sounded from her phone. Evelyn could hear her heart pounding as she opened the text.
Emma🌸: 5 minutes away! 😊
Evelyn sent a thumbs-up emoji back and opened her camera app, double-checking her lipstick wasn’t smudged and her hair still looked okay for the tenth time tonight. Satisfied, she put her phone away and started tapping her foot anxiously.
“Hey, Evelyn! Sorry, I was a little late,” A shy voice sounded behind her. She turned around and was speechless at the breathtaking sight of the short girl. Emma was dressed in a white and flowery vintage off-the-shoulder dress. The top half of the dress was tight with a little bit of ruffle at the top and on the short sleeves, bellow the waste it was loose. The dress fit her body perfectly, almost like it was made to be worn specifically by her.
“Beautiful.” That was all Evelyn could say at that moment.
“Oh stop,” Emma giggled, “you’re looking pretty hot yourself.” She gave Evelyn a wink and a cheesy smile, slipping her hand into hers and leading the way to the bar. It hasn’t even been that long and Evelyn’s brain was already malfunctioning. Normally she was very talented when it came to keeping her cool. But the girl who was holding her hand right now made it close to impossible. She used the short walk to recollect herself.
The bar they were at was one of Evelyn’s favorites. It was small with not that many people and on some nights they would have live music. It was a cool place to hang out even if you didn’t plan on drinking.
“We finally finished that large wedding order today. These are the most complex pieces I’ve ever done. Kieran even told us to stay home tomorrow and rest. It’s been a journey,” Emma ranted.
“Congratulations. Shall we celebrate then?” Evelyn said, holding up her glass.
“Of course. Cheers.” They clinked their glasses together, took a sip, and laughed.
Emma was a florist working at Petals and Bows, the best and only flower shop in Riverstone. Kieran, her boss, had texted her last night, the night of the reunion, saying they received a large order and she needed to come in and help. That’s when Evelyn got her number. The girls pulled an all-nighter together on a video call while Emma worked on the flower pieces.
“Still can’t believe she put the order in the night before the wedding,” Emma sighed.
“Hey, now we’re meant to be celebrating. Who wants to talk about work while celebrating?”
“You’re right.” Emma dragged out the 'i' and giggled.
They went into random conversations, getting to know more about each other. For Evelyn, it felt like she knew this girl all her life. Talking to her was so comfortable and easy. A little over an hour later they were leaving the bar practically glued together. Their fingers were intertwined, Emma had her head resting on Evelyn’s shoulder, and her unoccupied hand went and held Evelyn’s arm. She was basically cuddled to Evelyn’s side while they walked to the old faded green Honda Civic.
Upon reaching the car, Evelyn put her arm around Emma’s waist positioning her so that her back was against the car. She put her hand to Emma’s freckled, rose-dusted cheek and caressed the area under her eye with her thumb. “Can I?” She asked, looking from her eyes to her pink lips and then back to her green eyes again. Emma nodded and with that their lips met. It was slow and sweet. Emma brought her hands up and ran her fingers through Evelyn’s hair. Evelyn tightened her grip on the other girl's hips. Causing Emma to shudder and let out a little sound into Evelyn’s mouth.
When they parted with one last kiss, Evelyn saw that Emma’s lips were now stained red with her lipstick. She couldn’t contain the big goofy smile that spread across her face at the adorable sight. “You drove here right? I can walk you to your car.”
“Okay,” Emma said, still shy and blushing from the kiss. Evelyn walked her to her car and they shared one last goodbye kiss.
“So, I’ll see you tomorrow?” Evelyn asked.
“Duh.” Emma chuckled. And with that. She watched her drive off.
“FUCK YES!” Evelyn yelled in the middle of the parking lot, jumping and throwing a fist up in the air. She could feel her cheeks hurting from how big her smile was at that moment.
