Back at Solus Corporation, Charlie sat down with Lucia with the two of them having lunch, Charlie was eating a tuna sandwich while Lucia was eating a salad with cheese on it. She looked startled the moment she saw his face.
‘What’s wrong, Charlie?’ she asked ‘Did you get another awful call?’ Charlie sighed, and said:
‘I’ve decided to quit’ Lucia gasped the moment she heard him say that.
‘What?! Really?! You can’t be serious!’ a tear started rolling down her face. Charlie looked miserable himself.
‘I’m sorry, Lucia. It’s… nothing to do with you’ Lucia then groaned
‘You’re just about the only reason why I work here nowadays! I mean, I might as well quit, too!’
‘I’m sorry, Lucia. I… didn’t know I meant that much to you’ he started sobbing. There two were silent for a little while, with Lucia doing deep breaths and other things in an obvious attempt to compose herself’.
‘OK, so, why are you quitting?’ Charlie then shrugged.
‘I’ve just about had enough with working here. This company clearly only cares about money. More than they value actual human lives, and I want no part of that’ Lucia sighed. She had a frown on her face.
‘But Charlie, loads of companies are like that. It’s not like working for another is going to be any different’
‘I know, but then I feel I’m giving too much for this company. I feel like I’m giving my very heart and soul to it every day, and for what? Just to be told off every day?’
‘I know. That really sucks. I get told off a lot, too’
‘Wait, you do?’
‘Yes. I got told off for looking at someone funny once’
‘What?! What the hell?!’
‘Yes. And get a load of this: I knew this one guy who obviously had a crush on me. I didn’t feel the same about him and he’s been getting me into trouble all the time. If I “stare” at him or “follow” him, which he doesn’t know the difference between walking the same route and me actually following him, I get in trouble for it! And it’s not because they care oh so deeply about his feelings, it’s because they want to squeeze every last drop of work out of us. If it’s all affecting his workload I’m screwed!’
‘What a faggot’ declared Charlie. Lucia burst out laughing. A beeping noise came from his phone, it was a text from Angelica. It said “Don’t you think capitalism is wonderful?”’
‘You know what?! That’s what I should call him from now on. He’s a total faggot’ Charlie was texting back to Angelica saying “Love it, absolutely love I”, sending the message.
‘Oh God, I just texted “I love I”!’
‘Oh well, we’re all just mere mortals, Charlie’
‘Yeah, I guess so’ Charlie’s eyes went wide open ‘Hey, Lucia, I was wondering…’
‘Yes?’
‘Have you been talking to a strange woman lately? Someone who claims to be a “goddess of love”?’ she took a while to answer.
‘No. Have you? You haven’t been having funny dreams now have you?’
‘Nah’ he then sighed ‘I’m sorry, I guess I was just being stupid’
‘Oh no. Tell me about this “goddess of love”. Is she your new girlfriend?’
‘What? No!’ his face was all red ‘Though, she is really pretty’
‘Oh? What about me, then?’
‘Yes, you’re really pretty, too’
‘Awwww, thank you!’ at this point neither of them had even touched their food ‘And you’re really handsome, just so you know’
‘Really? I think I’m kind of ugly, really’
‘No, don’t be silly. You’re human, and that’s where our beauty comes from. Remember this, OK?’ Charlie had a stern look on his face.
‘You know, that sounds like something that goddess would have told me’
‘But even so, it’s totally true’
‘Well, thanks, Lucia’
‘You’re welcome, Charlie’ Charlie looked at his phone again. Angelica replied with the text “Really?”. He texted back: “No, it’s the bane of humanity”. ‘You’re talking shit about capitalism?’
‘Yes, I am talking shit about it’ Lucia gasped, very loudly.
‘But Charlie, think of the livelihoods of our greedy pigs at the top. They need to buy their Ferraris somehow!’
‘I guess they’ll have to settle for some other crappy car instead. Or better yet, sell their car and start walking’
‘Given how fat some of these people are that’s a pretty good idea’ Charlie started laughing. Later on they started eating their lunches, they were already fifteen minutes into their breaktime. Lucia looked at the clock and said:
‘Why is it the only time of the day that goes fast is lunchtime? Any other time of the day just goes by so slowly’
‘Yeah, I know’ Charlie took a look at her salad ‘How’s your salad, by the way?’
‘It’s OK’ she said, sighing.
‘It looks scrumptious’ Lucia laughed upon hearing him say that.
‘I want to eat healthy, you know!’
‘What even is healthy eating supposed to be anyway?’
‘That’s a good question, actually’ Lucia stopped eating her salad ‘Whenever I look online or read some magazine there’s always this new cancer causing food or this new thing that will make you fat or whatever. There are times when I really don’t know myself’
‘I guess common sense is the best thing we have’
‘Yeah’ Lucia paused for a moment ‘You know what? I’m going to do some research on what healthy eating really is. With everyone in America getting fat it’s about time someone came up with an actual solution!’
‘Yeah, it would beat some shitty fat burner pill that could possibly kill you’
‘Yes. I did hear something about sugar being the big cause of it’
‘Yeah, you should look into that’ They later finished off their lunches and not too long later they went back to their workstations.
