Just as soon as he took hold of his amulet,he transformed into a redhead man with amber eyes. What made him unmistakably nonhuman was a set of fox's ears and tail. His commemoration was cut short so he could decide what to do about Jiya falling to her death.
His true form was restored, there was nothing chaining him to her. He got what he wanted; he wasn't obligated to help her. She wasn't his friend nor family, simply put not his responsibility.
All he needed to do was turn his back and walk away. Yet he didn't have the heart to do it. His conscience would prick him perpetually.
"... I'll probably regret this."
Speedily sloping downward the cliff,he managed to catch up with her. Although she was too far away to pull,he jumped off and shielded her against the impact.
She made it practically unscathed, but he was bleeding profusely and definitely had broken a few ribs. At this rate,he would perish from blood loss.
"Kyro,why did you-"
"Don't embrace death just like that...It doesn't suit you." That was all he could say before collapsing from the excruciating pain.
He saved my life,I can't leave him in the lurch. I'll have to do the ritual.
"Malumi." Recited the enchantment while deposited five drops of her blood on his wounds.
In an instant, his injuries were totally healed. In contrast, she got dizzy spells. The werehuman roused gaping at her. Heeding his amazement, still lightheaded she began the explanation.
The women who created this ritual were called witches, they gave assistance to the heroes who fought to protect humanity long ago. Sadly, both were exterminated in a war against the Hanlins.
According to the myth, only a baby Hanlin,a witch and a hero survived. The witch, feeling sorry for the baby, stole the last magic sword and hid it on top of a mountain, then she did disappear. The hero thought the little thing was no threat and let it live.
A hundred years later, the monster grew up in an era where humans didn't have any more witches or heroes, all they had was a healing ritual. That's why they just quietly sent sacrifices to appease its hunger.
"I knew this story,I was after that magical sword. Before...well,you know."
"Then you're aware that our souls are linked."
"It means..?"
"When you get hurt I'll get sick in order for you to recover and vice versa."
"For how long?"
"Hours or days, depending on the gravity of the wound."
"That's troublesome. Let's just avoid injuries."
"That's what everybody does, anyways."
"Oh...right."
She found his reaction weird, but didn't question further.
This year,Jiya was chosen to be Hanlin's bride,in other words,a sacrifice. After killing the man-eating monster, she makes a deal with a little fox.
When he gets her out of that forest she would return the amulet that the beast stole from him. But would a human and a fox ,the weakest creatures in that damned forest, be able to survive that perilous journey?
