I drive us across town mostly in silence, except for the radio, quietly playing Sweet child O' Mine.
My hand was throbbing like a bitch, and Baby was sniffling in the back seat, his head resting against the window. I think he was more upset about losing Cluck Norris than he was about me being attacked, which, I guess made sense. We'd only known each other for less than a day, and I sure as hell would have been upset if Adam Kavinsky had been left behind.
"Where are we going?" Adam finally asks me, his glasses sitting crooked on his nose where Baby had elbowed him during the struggle. "I feel like the FBI has even more of a reason to follow us now that a talking chicken kicked their ass. They'll definitely be looking for us. "
It was the final straw. And I mean, I totally lose my shit at this point.
I slam on the brake and the van lurches to a halt, jerking Adam and Alien Boy forward in their seats. "We're not going anywhere until Alien Boy starts talking!" I yell at Adam. "I mean, I nearly got axed back there. If I'd been in a wheelchair, Mac and Me back there would have let me fucking drown in the goddamn lake while he watched! Why is he here? What the hell does he want with our planet? "
Adam sits stoically in his seat until I'm finished with my rant.
"Are you done?" He asks as he straightens his glasses, his voice low.
"Eat a Dick, Professor," I reply bitterly, and then I turn away, scanning the desert landscape around us. God, I hated this stupid little town and all the nosey people in it.
"I'm sorry," Baby finally speaks up from the backseat, "I didn't mean to drag you two into this mess. I didn't even plan on coming here in the first place, I was just so scared. "
"Scared of what?" I ask him, and I feel my anger starting to drain away.
"Asahrith, the one who I'm betrothed to," Bahz admits, his voice small. "I knew I was going to be married off eventually, my father and my people have been preparing me for the role ever since I was young. But then Asahrith arrived, and my father was enamored by his presence and his strength. He presumed that marrying me off would only strengthen our kingdom. "
"So what happened?" Adam asks him, and both of us are looking back at Baby now.
"He was awful," Baby explains, and then I hear him choke up a little. "He tried to force himself on me several times, and he's cruel to his servants. I couldn't go through with the marriage knowing how terrible he was, but I couldn't face my father either, so I ran away. "
A runaway prince. Who would have thought?
I rest my head against the steering wheel and then I start the car again. "Alright," I say, and Adam looks over at me. "You can't just run away from your problems, Baby," I tell him, "You have to face that shit like a man, you hear?"
"But Kevin, I'm not a man or human. I'm more closely related to--"
"Whatever!" I interrupt him, "Running away doesn't solve anything!" I turn towards the road that leads to the only Eckerds in our town.
"What the hell are you talking about?" Adam asks, looking irate. "Being forced into an arranged marriage with some douchebag is the perfect reason to run away! Baby needs us to protect him, Kevin. I thought you were better than this!"
"Yeah, well," I shoot him a glare, "I'm not, okay? I'm a shitty person!"
"No, you're not," Baby replies from the backseat, "You're just scared and confused like I am."
I park the car and then I turn to look at him, "Kevin Quinn doesn't get scared," I tell him. "I get angry, you got it? I'm a bad guy, Baby. So you better watch out!" I lunge for his face all while making an angry growling sound.
"Ahh!" Baby screams and he grabs Adam's jacket, holding onto him as tight as he can. "Why is your face so terrifying!?" He whimpers, his bottom lip trembling slightly.
"Stop it, Kevin!" Adam shouts at me, and then he shoves me as hard as he can.
"I'm just teaching him a lesson," I scoff a little and straighten my jacket. "Anyway, I'm going inside for some bandages for my fucking hand. You two stay in the car and keep an eye out for those FBI assholes if they show up."
I pop open my door and I climb out, then slam it shut. But as I'm strolling into the pharmacy, I glance back at Baby in the back seat, who's crying into his hands.
And I felt like shit, you know?
I go back over to his side and I tap on the window.
Baby looks up at me and he reluctantly rolls down the glass to look out at me. "What do you want?" He asks me, his voice all watery and upset.
"Here," I take off my leather jacket and I hand it to him through the window. "Hold onto this for me," I instruct him.
Baby seems startled, but he takes the jacket, lifting it to his nose to sniff. "It smells like body odor," He whispers, "And faintly like a Kratual Skunk."
My cheeks flush red in an instant. "Look, Baby. If you put this jacket on, you'll automatically be a bad boy, like me. Then nobody's gonna want to hurt you. Not even that asshole alien who you were supposed to marry."
Baby stares down at the jacket and then he slides it on, but it's huge on him. And I mean, it totally makes him look even tinier in the thing. "Like this?" He asks me, looking hopeful now. "Am I a bad boy now?"
My heart sputters and I nod my head, then I head for the pharmacy.
"Pfft," Adam says as I walk past, "I knew you weren't as bad as you say you are," He mumbles.
I flip him the finger on my way into the building and he just laughs.
