We passed by a few zombies but we didn't need to kill them. As we neared the cafeteria, there were more zombies around. Shit, maybe the cafeteria got more weapons that might actually do damage or some more survivors, I thought to myself as I motioned the group to stop at the corner. As we stopped at the corner, I started looking around for a safer way to get into the cafeteria. Troy saw me looking around and tapped my shoulder. As I looked at him, he pointed to the back way. I nodded and directed the group to the back halls.
As we were about to enter the cafeteria through the back, one of the kids in the group started freaking out. “Someone shut him up!” I whisper as I look around to see if any zombies are near. Mika covered the guy's mouth to quiet him but it wasn’t working. Fuck, the kid is having a panic attack, “guys stand around us, I’m going to try to calm him down,” they nod as they do so. I sat the kid down, “lay your head between your knees and try to breathe.” He does so, as he slowly calms down I rub his back to soothe him. A few zombies came close but the others took care of them.
After the kid calmed down, we started to head towards the cafeteria entrance. Mika went to open the doors but I stopped her. “What’s wrong,” she whispered. I pointed through the glass, and there were survivors. But not the ones we wanted to find. Why is he here? I thought to myself as I looked at Carl and his friends as he fought off some of the zombies. “Come on, we got to help them,” I say as I push the doors open. As my group came inside I made sure the doors were shut so no more of the creatures came in. I held up the crowbar I was carrying and started speed walking to the others.
Fuck it, I say as I take off in a sprint, taking down a closeby zombie. The others followed in pursuit, although hesitant. As we got to Carl and the other guys, there weren't many zombies to take out. “The hell?” Carl said as he saw me. “No ‘thanks for saving me’?” I say cocky. “Whatever,” he rolled his eyes and helped up a girl. The girl looked at my group and looked at me, “thank you mister.” “It’s Elijah,” I smiled.
I look around and go towards the kitchen area. “What are you doing?” Carl said, following me. “We need food to survive in this situation, don’t we?” I say, using my crowbar to break the glass on a couple of vending machines that were in the cafeteria. Mika went and grabbed some trash bags and started helping me put the chip bags, waters, cookie bags, and bagged varieties of sandwiches into the bags. I handed my crowbar to one of the students in my group, “I need you to break the glass on the other vending machines and help Mika empty them out into the bags.”
Troy and I walked into the kitchen area. We can hear the refrigerators humming. “Now we know the generators are still working,” Troy said, and attempted to lean against a counter that wasn't there. I tried to stop him from falling but I ended up falling with him.
“Are you ok?” I asked Troy, sitting up. “Yea I’m ok, are you?” He says laughing slightly. I nod, starting to get up. As I started to get up, Troy pulled me back down and put his hand over my mouth. “Shh,” Troy says quietly. He removes his hand and points over to what he spotted and I saw why he stopped me. A lunch lady zombie. One of her eyes was dug out of her head, blood covered her clothes, huge gashes all over her body. I looked at her left hand and it turns out she’s holding a kitchen knife. Shit, now it’s gonna be harder with her swinging the knife around, I think to myself. I reach my hand up over the counter and grab a knife.
