After another unappetising breakfast, Natalie was sent to have another MRI scan. She hadn’t heard of the results, and was just biding her time filling out more crosswords and sudoku puzzles. She was later approached by Doctor Walton, who closed the curtains around her bed.
‘Natalie’ he began ‘We have the results from your MRI scan recently. I have to say, me and my colleagues are really impressed with the results, your brain has almost completely healed.
‘Really?!’
‘Yes, it has. Your skull fractures are healing well, too. With enough rest, they should heal entirely in a matter of weeks. With that in mind, we can discharge you from the hospital’ Natalie appeared to be delighted. ‘Which no doubt you are very pleased to hear’
‘Yes, I am! I thought I was going to be here forever!’
‘You weren’t going to be. Through your courage and willingness to recover, I had every hope in you. Through my time as a neurologist, I have learned the mind can do incredible things, some things me and my colleagues thought were impossible’ Natalie looked as if she had something to say to him ‘Is everything else OK? I heard you were suffering from depression and had hallucinations’ Natalie took a while to answer.
‘I’ll be fine, thanks’
‘Are you sure? If you need a counsellor we’ll have one on standby. I’ll give you a number to call’
‘OK, thank you’ Doctor Walton then left, Natalie immediately got her phone, calling her mother’s number. ‘Hello, Mum?’
‘Hello Natalie! How are you?’
‘I’ve got great news, I’ve been discharged!’
‘What, really?!’
‘Yes!’ Natalie was a bit out of breath ‘I know this is a bit of a short notice, but could you pick me up?’
‘Of course! I’ll get to you as soon as I can!’
‘OK, thanks’
‘Bye!’
Roughly half an hour later Natalie left the hospital carrying a bag of medicines, her mother lead her to her car which was in a huge car park.
‘Parking here is so expensive!’ her mother complained, as they were inside the car park.
‘Wait, do they charge the staff to park here, too?’ her mother nodded ‘Seriously? That’s so stupid!’ the two got in the car, which her mother starting up the engine. When they were away from the hospital, Natalie dialled Tyrell’s phone number.
‘Hello Natalie’
‘Hey there Tyrell, I’ve got some great news for you!’
‘What’s that?’
‘I’m out of the hospital!’
‘Are you?’
‘Yes!’
‘That’s… good to hear. Will you be OK?’
‘Oh yes, I’ll be fine. Honestly’ there was a brief period of silence. ‘So, would you like to meet me sometime soon?’
‘Of course! Where and when?’
‘At my home, do you know where that is?’ Tyrell didn’t answer. ‘I’ll text it to you later’
‘OK’
‘Meet me in about two hours time, OK?’
‘OK’
‘I love you, Tyrell’
‘I love you, too’
‘See you later!’ Natalie hung up her phone. ‘Mum?’
‘Yes?’
‘I want to ask you something’
‘Yes?’
‘Do you believe in life after death, or any of that?’ her mother looked puzzled.
‘I… honestly don’t know’
‘I don’t either. To be honest, I want it to be true, but… how would we know for sure?’
‘I don’ know, Natalie. I guess we’ll both find out one day’
Fresh out of leaving a tempestuous relationship and a dead end retail job, Natalie has been living a rough life as of late. She's constantly tired, miserable, and stressed to the moon and back. Such was an everyday occurrence until one day she looked out of the window seeing the world falling apart, as if it were consumed by a black hole. Accepting that it was just an illusion, she went outside and fell into the hole, waking up meeting a creature who claimed to be her inner subconsciousness.
