Sept. 30, 2015 Wed.
Audrey's eyes sprung wide open again. She was back in her bed. She turned to her alarm clock, it was 6:00 am. She got up, and instead of directly doing her morning routine, she opened her latest diary. She wrote about the nightmare she experienced, she recounted it all perfectly. It would not escape her.
“September 30th, 2015. Today I had a nightmare unlike any before…” After she had finished writing, she began her routine, she put on new clothes, brushed her teeth and ate cereal with her little brother.
“Another sleepless night honey?” Her mom asked.
“Yeah,” Audrey replied groggily.
“I’ll be sure to let your dad know to bring a new pillow honey,” the mom said, kissing her head.
After breakfast, they got into the car and left for school. Audrey got as much rest as she could on the car ride. They arrived at Audrey's school, waiting there at the gate was Looz and Sam. Audrey got out of her car to meet them.
"Bye Mama, I love you," she said, waving goodbye
"Love you too honey," she said, giving a kiss.
Looz and Sam walk up to the car.
"Good morning Mrs. Perrin." They said in unison.
"Good morning girls," she said.
Audreys day started with her friends, they talked like normal, although she borrowed Sam's sweater to nap again. The bell rang and it was time to head to their respective classes. Audrey moved around the crowd minding her business until she reached her class on the second floor. On her way, she ran into the head of the yearbook club, Anthony Toriello. He stopped Audrey to take a picture of her.
"Smile Audie," he said, mistaking her name. "Nobody is getting left out of the year book under my watch!" He continued and went along his way.
Audrey was too tired to deal with that. She finally made it to her Trigonometry class. It was the first class of her "B" day schedule. The first class of each day was always the longest, rounding out to about an hour and 35 minutes. After Trigonometry it was Creative Writing class, that was her favorite class. Lunch was always spent with Sam and Looz and occasionally Sandra would be there. Then it was Physics class, followed by Advisory.
Advisory was a class to help students catch up on other classes and keep up to date with current events. It was that class that they had to do an end of the year group project. Audrey's advisory class was in the library, the librarian normally had them keep journals to write about a topic around the world and the rest of the time was left to the students. Audrey sat on a table with Looz, Sam, and Sandra.
They talked for the whole period, for the most part about things that happened during the day and their little inside jokes. The final bell rang and it was time for them to go.
"Hey Audrey, you read up on the book for Harris' right?" Sandra asked.
"Yes I got all 8 chapters done so I can just focus on other things today."
"Like reading the next 4 chapters?" Sam added.
"No way, I can't get into this book. I'm going to focus on making my own story!" Audrey said, passion burning in her eyes and confidence flowing from her voice, "I have to write a short story for Creative Writing class." — "which reminds me! I need to get my AP Lit Book! I'll meet you guys at the tables!" Audrey said, running ahead to the main building.
The school was pretty small, there was one main building at the center that held all the lockers and classrooms. It comprises 3 floors, the first being meant for 9th graders (Freshmen), the second floor being for 10th graders (Sophomores), and the third floor being for the 11th (Juniors) and 12th graders (Seniors). Behind it was the sports field and P.E area. Near the front of the school was the gymnasium. Next to that was the office on the first floor, and stairs that led to the library on the second floor. From the library was a second staircase opposite to that of the first that led down to the lunch area. The cafeteria/lunch area sat in front of the main building along with the courtyard where there would occasionally be entertainment on Fridays. Closer to the back of the school, facing the front of the main building was the auditorium for theatre plays and choir shows. Right next to that was the music rooms. That was all there really was to the school.
Audrey walked up the stairs to the third floor, thoughts of her story filling her mind.
"How should I end it?" She wondered, zoning out. She would go scene by scene—word by word— over and over in her head until she was satisfied with a result that fit her vision.
"Audrey! Is that you!?" A familiar voice called out to her, bringing her back to reality. She turned in surprise. Her heart nearly jumped out of her throat, she couldn't believe her eyes.
"J-Jackie!?" She uttered in surprise. "I haven't seen you in so long, I've missed you!" She said, running in for a hug.
He embraced her, tightly squeezing her. She gasped for air.
"Ha! I forgot people used to call me that, I just go by Jacob now," he said rubbing the back of his neck. "But look at you! You look so pretty! And your hair is longer! And that smile! You don't have braces anymore!" He was ecstatic to see her again. Her face turned tomato red. She held onto the strap of her bag tighter.
"What are you doing here?" She felt she knew the answer but didn't want to get her hopes up.
"Oh!" He reached into the pocket of his hoodie, "I'm transferring here, I just got done doing the whole orientation with one of the office TA's, and I wanted to look for my classes.”
"May I see?" She asked, extending her hand
"Go ahead!" He replied, giving her the paper.
She skimmed it, quietly mumbling to herself.
"Alright, I can show you if you'd like?"
"Hell yeah! We can catch up!" He said excitedly. They go up the main building going down a carefully planned route to make sure they wouldn't have to backtrack.
"So what made you want to move back to California?" Audrey asked, holding her hands in her hoodie pocket.
"My mom got tired of all the rainy weather over there, and my dad was able to transfer over here," He replied, looking off to the distance as to recount events.
"Washington sounds nice though, I'd love to be in a place that constantly rains, I absolutely adore rainy weather!"
"Nothing really beats beach weather for me! We should go to the beach sometime!" He told her.
"Yeah, hang out with the old group again!" Audrey said.
"Oh, do Sam and Looz go to this school too?" He asked. Audrey nodded.
"Perfect! The old crew is back together! Haha!" He leaped ahead in excitement. Unbeknownst to him someone was passing by, and in his excitement, ran straight into her. She happens to be Natalie Mendoza, the most popular girl at Aevelly High, known notably for hosting parties that have "the entire senior class."
Jacob nearly tripped over himself. Natalie stumbles, Jacob grabs her shoulder so she wouldn’t fall.
"S-sorry about that…" he said with a long pause. His pupils wide and his cheeks a rosy pink. He immediately stood straight and gave her some space.
"Sorry about that Natalie," Audrey added.
"Don't worry about it," she said, not taking her eyes off of Jacob. As she passed by she gave him a quick wink.
"Looks like you got to be careful where you're going Jacob," Audrey laughed. He stood in silence staring at Natalie walking away.
"Jacob?" Audrey asked, waving her hand in front of his face to get his attention.
"She's… Beautiful…" he said in an awe struck voice. The statement made Audrey feel a bit diffident.
