The very next morning, Longwei and Mengyao began their journey to the Yi residence. Mengyao had to admit, the trip was fairly quiet between them but it could have been simply because they both were in thought.
Given they left so early in the morning, they were able to reach the Yi residence before the sun had set. After taking the horses to their stables, Mengyao led Longwei through the large red doors and toward the main hall.
“Yao’er,” Mengyao heard a voice say. Mengyao and Longwei stopped short of the main hall.
He turned and immediately bowed. “Madame Tung-Mei.”
“No need for formalities. Young Master Longwei told me you were to find more about the people who kidnapped you and possibly find out who killed your family,” Madame Tung-Mei said as she approached.
She sighed and put her hand to Mengyao’s face. “Yao’er, I wish you didn’t have to go. But I know this is important to you. I made the arrangements and the things you’ll need on your trip have been packed. Your clothing, rations, everything you need.”
“Madame Tung-Mei…”
She shook her head. “You two may rest here. Young Master Longwei, one of my servants will show you to a room you may sleep in for the night. I will also have the servants bring you two food to eat.”
“Your generosity knows no bounds, Madame Tung-Mei,” Longwei said, bowing to Madame Tung-Mei.
She nodded before she walked past the young men. Mengyao watched as Madame Tung-Mei walked away and sighed. He knew this trip was necessary but it didn’t stop him from missing her already.
Before Mengyao could speak to Longwei, a servant came to him.
“Young Master Longwei. The Lady of the House would like me to show you where you will be sleeping for the night,” the servant said, bowing to him.
“Ah, yes. Well, I’ll speak to you in the morning,” Longwei said, smiling as he walked with the servant to his quarters.
Mengyao watched the servant took Longwei away. He furrowed his brows and huffed just a tad as he watched Longwei talking to her, laughing a bit. Mengyao heard a small giggle from her, which made the pit in his stomach churn.
Mengyao turned and as he walked to his own room, furrowed his brow. Who did she think she was? And why did Longwei talk with her like that? How could he?! He should only...!
Mengyao paused and had to think for a moment.
Why did he care so much?
