I spent the rest of my week pulling bodies out of the river and taking photos of them. The lab had also asked for my help in photographing injuries and looking over all the photos to make sure nothing would be missed. I had an eye for minor details that a lot of others would miss even after many looks over things. My mother called this the last gift my father had given me before he passed. My father had taught me that no detail was too small to include in my findings. As a young boy, I used to go for treasure hunts with him when he wasn't working over sea's and he would teach me all kinds of useful things, like paying expert attention to my details.
Here I was waiting in line for a coffee before heading back to work. I ordered my coffee and stood off to the side.
"Fancy seeing you here."
Turning to look back to the person who spoke to me it was him, Andrei. I internally sighed and said hello before grabbing my coffee and trying to leave. My mother would throw a hissy fit if she saw the way I was treating him. She and my father had raised me far better than this. He had two coffees in his hand when he stepped in front of me at my truck.
"I want to say sorry for smashing your camera, I'm sure you understand about the evidence, however."
"Please get out of my way, I have to get back to work. I have more than a dozen bodies I still have to take photos of before they become complete mush."
"Right, My bad. See you around Lukas."
He got out of my way and headed back towards the SUV parked in the back of the lot. He had someone in the passenger seat who looked pretty damn happy to see the coffee. It was hard to tell any details from where I was in my truck, but it wasn't either of the men I had seen him with before. I had put in way too much work this week already dealing with this than I wanted to.
He didn't start his SUV or show any signs to, so I started my truck. I didn't have the luxury to sit here all day to get a look at his passenger. I had work to do.
I had finished the iced coffee with two shots of espresso and a vanilla flavour shot by the time I finished cataloging just the gunshots on my current set of corpses. I kept telling myself after this batch of corpses that I was going to take a weeklong holiday and just sit in my bed and not move a damn inch. I rarely had time off, but this was well over what I had been working on before. Part of me wanted to ask him to ask his boss to lay off on the murders for a few weeks so that I could relax again and not feel like a worked fourteen hours walking on glass. I understood they also had jobs and killing people was one of them, but a few fewer dead friends to take photos of would-be well accepted.
"Lukas?"
"Over here!" I said waving from my spot on the floor.
I had all the photos I had taken printed, and I was going through them all making sure there was nothing I missed the first time, that only the camera had spotted.
"Chief says he needs you for a couple of quick mugshots. Some drunks that are being booked."
"Alright, I'll be there in just a moment."
Standing up, I brushed off my pants and grabbed my camera. I headed towards the mugshot room. I hated dealing with drunks; they were the worst. I couldn't count on both hands the number of times someone had puked on or yelled at me. At least this way, I would have fresh eyes when going back to look over the photos.
I spotted the Chief and headed into the room. There were quite a few people, half a dozen at least.
"Please step up to the line and hold this." One officer said holding the sign out for the guy to take. Which he did with no problems. Thank god.
I snapped a few photos, checked them over, gave the ok and we moved on to the next person. It went on like this right until we got a furious drunk who had no problem throwing hands with the officers. I watched as they tased him twice before he finally cooperated with them. He took the sign and stared at me the whole time. It was hard not to get creeped out by his looking at me like I was a hunk of meat for him to devour.
Once they took him away, I left to go upload the photos and send them to booking. After uploading them, and sending them off I went back through the database and back to Andrei Mihails arrest information. There was really nothing I didn't expect except that he only got five years which was lower than any arrest for his crimes I had ever seen. I guess money talks and criminals walk. I couldn't find any associates to him and that meant the other man I had seen before was nameless, so was his carbon copy.
I wondered what I would find if I headed back out the lake now to have a good look, surely I would find the bodies that they had just put there. Not that I would do that because it wasn't like I wanted to keep running into the man. He just seemed to be in many places I also was.
I spent the rest of my day cataloging photos and taking photos of an injury on a domestic violence case. She had been well alive though when I took the photos. On my way out of the station, I checked my schedule and was so happy to see that I had tomorrow and the next day off. I already knew what I was going to do with my time. Heading to my truck I noticed someone had slashed my tires right away. This didn't scream mafia, but the work of someone who was angry, the domestic was a pretty excellent choice of who had done this.
I headed back inside. I had only been outside for a few moments but I had walked into a pretty sketchy scene for the second time in two weeks. The chief and his right hand were there, but so were a few dozen men in suits, a few I recognized. I hadn't been noticed, so I was just going to say fuck it, but leave it to me to hit shit on a side desk and knock it all to the floor.
Looking up from behind the desk there were several firearms pointed at me.
"Lukas?" My supervisor said looking confused.
"Hi. Yeah, Don't shoot! Someone slashed all my tires."
"I'll page someone to take you home, and ill go over the camera footage." The Chief said looking at me sharply.
"I'll take him home, I was just about to head out, anyway," Andrei said his eyes meeting mine as I stood up from behind the desk.
I didn't object to the ride because the Chief nodded and said that was perfect. They resumed their meeting as we left. Here I was getting into the car with a mafia man. It wasn't a wise idea, but I honestly had little choice. Sucking it up I got into the SUV with him. He loosened his tie and popped two buttons on his collar. From here where I was sitting now I could spot the very light hints of grey in his hair a few small strands here and there, but otherwise, he was still a younger-looking man. Though he was in his forties according to his arrest record.
His features were indefinitely easy on the eyes.
