"Good morning," Leo sat in bed, typing on his laptop. At his side, the most precious person lay covered with sheets. Opening his sleeping eyes, he moved slightly, drawing Leo's attention.
"G'morning..." Kai mumbled into the pillow. Leo smiled at him and brushed through his hair gently. "What are you doing? I can smell coffee." He yawned. Sitting up with a deep frown on his face, he stared forward with half-closed eyes and a blank expression.
"Now I'm sure of that. You are not a morning man, are you?" He chuckled and leaned to him, leaving a kiss on his forehead. "You are so beautiful like this."
Kai groaned, embarrassed and sat next to Leo, leaning against the headboard.
"Here, I have one for you too. I suspected you would wake up as soon as you sniff mine. " Leo handed Kai a steaming cup. "This is also your early Christmas gift."
"Huh?" Kai stared at him, confused but taking a sip from a cup. "You got me a morning coffee as a Christmas gift?"
"A coffee machine." Leo happily smiled, looking at now even more confused Kai. "It's in the kitchen."
"But I already have one." Frowning, he looked at him.
"But I don't." Leo reached for a cup and drunk in silence as Kai glanced at his coffee and then at the brightly smiling man sitting next to him in bed. Suddenly everything that Leo said now clicked in place.
"You got yourself a coffee machine so I can have a nice coffee at your place?!" Kai almost spilt some of the liquid on the duvet when suddenly turning to the side to have a better look at laughing Leo, who was nodding enthusiastically. "That's the best Christmas gift I ever got, Leo. How thoughtful of you." He laughed, leaning closer to him. Their shoulders, touching.
"Do you like it? I figured you would be coming here more often, so you will need one." Leo smiled shyly at him.
"I really like it. Especially the part of me waking up here more often." He looked up and kissed him softly. Kai loved that he tasted like coffee and mint. The calming smell of cedarwood and lavender hit his nostrils. The one he associated with safety and love. Leo deepened the kiss, pressing closer against Kai's broad chest. Kai was lost in their morning make-out session but still aware of the cup he was holding, balancing it carefully to make sure it doesn't spill anything out of it.
"Can I borrow some of your clothes? I guess it's time to bring some of mine here in case I will sleep over again." Kai stood by the door to the living room, wearing only a towel after a shower.
"You are my boyfriend. Of course, you will sleep here." He pointed at the coffee machine. "Don't remember what we were talking about in the morning?"
"Oh yeah. I sort of forgot about that when I kissed you, and you suddenly pulled the protection out of nowhere like some magician." Kai narrowed his eyes and went to the bedroom to find something to wear.
He returned wearing a pair of grey joggers and the blacktop. On the table were piled toasts, juice and two small plates waiting for him. Leo sat down, and Kai took a seat in front of him.
"I'm glad we have the same size. You look good wearing my clothes, by the way."
"I know, luckily our style is pretty much the same. The only difference is that you have got an insane amount of high necks. Is that some new fashion in your department?" Kai asked while reaching for the toast and placing it on his plate.
"I just like them. High necks are practical, and I can wear them for nearly half a year here. I hate scarves, so this is very convenient." Leo looked up at him and continued. " You know, I've been thinking lately. You seem too cautious, sometimes. We are dating, so some of the stuff like sleeping over or borrowing my clothes are natural. I don't want you to feel uncomfortable, and I hope you will ease a bit more with time." He smiled softly.
Kai stopped eating and reminded silent for a moment, lost in thoughts as he always did when he thought of what to say and what to keep for himself. As if carefully picking his words, weighting the sentences and forming them into light versions so they most likely won't offend anyone or start a fight Kai can't win.
"I don't have much of an experience in this. I mean relationships. My previous was different from what we have now." Kai paused. "With Nolan was more about hanging out and having sex. We never had a deep emotional connection, as the one I can feel with you. I truly loved him, and we have been together for over a year, but now I can see what we were missing, and it wasn't healthy. He didn't care about me as much as you do, and I have to learn how to accept that." He thought again before continued. "Sometimes I feel like the things are going fast between us, but then it feels so right before I get too scared and back off. You know my parents." He looked at Leo, who nodded, letting him continue without breaking the silence. "That's why I thought that the relationship with Nolan is like it should be. That's why I was so hurt when he dumbed me from one day to another without giving me a reason. With you, I'm learning what it means to love and care about someone. I just need some time."
"Take all you need." He reached to hold Kai's hand on the table. "I have never been in a relationship before. I can learn how to be in one with you. I never thought I would want to be with someone as much as I want to be with you." he squeezed his hand gently.
"Noah mention that you were dating people at University," Kai asked, recalling the conversation they had with Noah the other day.
"Yeah, I thought if I try, I may fall for that person, but it never happened. I felt guilt leading them on, so eventually, I broke up with them." Leo explained, and Kai noticed a sad look on his face.
"With me is different?" Kai felt uneasy as previous experience flashed in his mind.
"Of course! It's different with you from the very beginning. I wanted to get to know you and get close to you. I couldn't stop thinking about you." Leo felt the need to convince Kai about his sincerity. Noah mentioned to him before that Kai doesn't trust easily, and he was afraid to lose what they had. It was still fresh and fragile. "I like you, Kai. I never felt what I feel towards you with anyone before. I... I started this relationship, not even realizing it at first. It's different. You are different."
"Me too. I feel something, and I want to learn how to handle it." Looking down on his plate, Kai tried to hide his face from Leo as he was aware of his red from embarrassment face.
Still holding their hands, Leo breathed shakily, losing the tension from his shoulders. "I think we need to talk time to time about our feelings. It's good to let things go at peace, but at the same time, I don't want you to feel insecure or start overthinking. If you have questions, don't be afraid to ask or let me know, and I will do the same."
"Okay." Kai stayed silent but tried his best to smile reassuringly at Leo, to let him know that everything was okay even if it wasn't. He couldn't get out of his head the thought that one day Leo would wake up and decide that indeed he wasn't the one.
