I stared at the endless void, the wind caressed my flushed cheeks. 'This is it.' I muttered softly, hoping Zephyrus would bring my words with him. I held the rusted railings tightly, my knuckles turning white from the pressure. The coldness of the metal seeped into my fingertips. I looked towards my left arm, the mark of my soulmate tainted by blades and cigarette burns of my own doing.
'Soulmates don't mean a happily ever after.' I thought, tears blurring my vision.
'They're society's lock and chain.'
Letting out a shuddering gasp, clutched my hand to my chest and slowly I let go of the railing and fell. As though the spirit of Icarus possessed me, I felt golden wings of wax and tar lift me and gave me the ability to fly.
And as I descended back into the mortal plane, I met him, his crystalline blue eyes and hair as black as the starry night. He looked panicked and afraid. And so I gave him a reassuring smile. His hand outstretched as though he wanted me to hold on and in a spark of fear of death I tried to reach him with my left hand to grasp his, but only our fingertips touched and as our eyes locked, we knew.
We were soulmates.
It was in this I knew that fate had led him here. To save me, to love and protect me. As I descended lower, I let out a languished scream as I fell to my death and my dying sight looked upon my soulmate's eyes upon my wrecked mortal coil. He ran back inside to rush down, it might have been mere minutes or hours till he reached me. I saw him collapse beside me, his tears hit my cheek and I barely felt it. I looked at his sorrowful gaze and felt love encapsulate me.
'For he was truly beautiful.'
My body that was once filled with pain and suffering slowly dissipated as my senses departed from me. His beautiful face marred by tears was the last thing I saw.
Happily ever after isn't for me after all.
