Sunset on Winminster Academy. Georgia nervously walked out of the school kitchen.
“The chef was wicked nice, giving me my dinner for free in exchange for taking out the trash,” thought Georgia. “But I won't be able to rely on her forever. I need to figure out what's going on with dad, and quickly.”
Georgia stepped into the girls' dorms – everyone was out eating dinner with their friends, so the common room was empty. She grabbed a towel off a shelf, and skipped into the bathrooms. The young woman took off her jacket as she walked towards the showers. Just then, Georgia heard a scraping sound. She turned around to see a small heat vent sliding open on the floor. The face of a bearded man popped out of the vent.
“Oh! Excuse me, miss, but maybe you can help me? I'm a bit lost... would you happen to know where room 882 is?”
Georgia stared stunned at the man.
“PERVERT!!!” shouted Georgia.
Georgia stomped the man's face in, then pulled her jacket back on as she ran away.
“Why you... get back here!” yelled the vent man.
Georgia ran all through the halls. She looked behind her, and saw that the bearded man was following her – he had somehow escaped the vent. The man was wearing a turquoise suit, with gold rings sewn into the fabric. He wore leather boots. The man's golden hair was tied into a ponytail, as was his silver beard.
Georgia turned a corner. The pursuing man followed. This hallway had windows all across one side – the setting sun shone through, giving the area an orange glow. Georgia was nowhere to be found. The man in the suit stepped forward, looking at the doors across from the windows. One of the doors was open, and led into an empty classroom. The man peered into the classroom, bathed in orange light, and noticed Georgia cowering under one of the desks. The man stepped into the room.
“Look, I'm not a pervert, there just aren't any signs inside-”
As the ponytail man walked into the classroom, he saw his own shadow appear in front of him, revealing a collection of janitorial supplies. There was no classroom. The man turned around, just as Georgia slammed the closet door behind him. She blocked the door with a broom, making sure that it couldn't be opened from the inside.
“Perfect,” said Georgia. “Now, to find a teacher…”
Georgia ran off, back the way she came. As she did, five bacteria-like creatures crawled out from under the door, muttering in some made-up language.
Georgia continued to run down the halls when she heard a smashing sound from a room near her. She stopped and looked at the open door. It was room 882 – the same room she had chemistry class in earlier that day.
“Dammit!” shouted a voice from inside. “That treasure has to be around here somewhere! What else could that clue have meant?!”
“Treasure?!”
Georgia turned to look in the room. She saw Miss Bottine, the silver-haired woman, pulling bricks away from the floor underneath desk number 30. Georgia moved away, so she was out of view of the door.
Georgia stared forward and whispered. “Shattered Dreams.”
A human-like figure appeared next to Georgia. The figure had a glass body, with shoulder pads that looked like mirrors. It had constructs on the side of its head in the shape of a harp, and crowns of thorns around its biceps. There was an eight-point star pattern on its chest. This figure was a stand – a manifestation of Georgia's very soul – and its name was Shattered Dreams!
The stand walked in front of its user. As it moved in front of Georgia, the surface of Shattered Dream's skin gained the appearance of the wall behind the young woman. Viewed from the front, an observer would be completely unable to see Georgia.
The teenager walked into the classroom with her stand floating in front of her, sneaking up behind the teacher. Bottine continued to throw pieces of the floor around the room.
“No! It's impossible!” shouted Miss Bottine. “There's no way that hint was a red herring! I swear... you’ve burned me for the last time, Giorno Giovanna!”
“HEY!” shouted Georgia.
Miss Bottine turned around. Georgia stood a few steps below her, no longer invisible.
“Why did you say that name?!” yelled Georgia. “What do you have to do with Giorno Giovanna?!”
“Who the hell are you?”
“Answer the question! Why did you say my father's name?!”
Miss Bottine chuckled.
“Of course. Your name on the class roster – it was spelled G-E-O-V-A-N-A, correct? Yes, in hindsight it's obvious. All those wire transfers were a red herring... just not an intentional one. Those suspicious checks were being sent... to you. Still, at least this gives me a second chance to take my revenge…”
“Revenge?! What the hell are you talking about?!”
“Little girl, I've been patient for the past ten years. You can afford to be patient for a couple seconds.”
Miss Bottine took a case out of her coat, and removed a pair of contact lenses. She placed the contacts in her eyes, blinking a few times. Georgia stared at the silver-haired woman, confused.
“MEGA-DEATH!” shouted Bottine.
The form of a child-like stand appeared in front of Miss Bottine. The stand had a metal skull for a head. It wore a torn up suit and a pair of sunglasses. Its arms and legs were locked up in cuffs. Mega-Death breathed heavily. Every time it exhaled, green steam appeared from the base of the skull. The woman removed a key from her lab coat, and used it to unlock the cuffs. The stand attempted to rush forward, but the woman grabbed its head with one hand. She unbuttoned her coat with her other hand, and stared at Georgia.
As the coat fell to the ground, the woman’s true outfit was revealed - a pair of striped leggings, a pair of long gloves, a tie, and some underwear. Her bra was clasped together with an upside down peace sign. She had a tattoo on her torso with a diagonal square cut into four sections - the top three sections had the number 4, and the bottom section had the letters “OX”. Georgia noticed that the woman's contact lenses gave her the appearance of pitch-black eyes, with glowing green irises.
“My name... isn't Miss Bottine,” said the silver-haired woman. “That's just something I use as an alias from time to time. My real name... is Risotto Caligula. Ten years ago, your father killed the man who raised me. Now, Georgia Geovana! Prepare to die! Mega-Death! Go wild!”
Risotto Caligula shoved her stand forward, and let go. Mega-Death jumped into the air, and sliced through it with its left hand. A blade of metal appeared in the air, and flew towards Georgia.
“Shattered Dreams!” shouted Georgia.
The glasswork stand appeared in front of Georgia, and caught the blade out of the air. A small cut appeared on Georgia's hand as Shattered Dreams tossed the sheet of metal to the side.
“So... you're a stand user too,” said Caligula. “I figured as much from the daughter of Giorno Giovanna. But know this – no stand user has ever been able to stand up to Mega-Death's ability! You may have been able to catch that sheet of cobalt and nickel... but no matter how fast your stand is, you won't stop this attack!”
Mega-Death picked up a brick and threw it at Georgia. Shattered Dreams grabbed a desk and used it to block the brick. The brick turned into a red powder cloud and a collection of metal shards as it crashed into the surface of the desk. Most of the red dust splashed against the wood, but the little Georgia inhaled was enough to set her into a coughing fit. Shattered Dreams dropped the desk and disappeared.
“Hm. Pity. If you had inhaled all that selenium and arsenic powder like I intended, this battle would be over with by now…”
“Selenium? Arsenic? This stand… converts objects into poisons?!” thought Georgia. “No, wait… there must be something more than that. The attack before that, it threw a blade made of cobalt and nickel. Those are all pure elements rather than chemical compounds… maybe that has something to do with it?
“Let’s see… selenium uses the symbol ‘Se’. It has an atomic number of 34, and a standard atomic weight of 78.981. Arsenic… symbol ‘As’, atomic number 33, atomic weight 74.922. They’re right next to each other on the periodic table. Cobalt and nickel... are also right next to each other. Cobalt has an atomic number of 27, and nickel has an atomic number of 28.
“There’s also the question of what the metal shards in the desk have to do with any of this. Maybe it’s something to do with the original chemical composition of the brick? I remember reading somewhere that most of a fired brick’s mass is made up of silica (SiO2) and alumina (Al2O3). Aluminium and silicon… those are also right next to each other! Atomic numbers 13 and 14 respectively! Which means those metal droplets… yes, it all fits together now. Oxygen is atomic number 8… with nickel being 28!”
“Your stand… Mega-Death, was it?” wheezed Georgia. “Its power… is to control the chemical composition of objects, correct? More specifically… anything your stand touches gets moved forward on the periodic table by 20 spots! Nitrogen turns into cobalt, oxygen into nickel, aluminium into arsenic, and silicon into selenium!”
“Hmph. It seems you’re more clever than I gave you credit for,” said Risotto Caligula. “But unfortunately... it won’t be enough to save you. Now, M-”
Before the silver-haired woman could finish her command, Mega-Death rushed forward towards Georgia.
“Nice initiative, Mega-Death! Now, turn that blondie into a statue!”
“My stand... Shattered Dreams... has the ability to refract light.”
Just as Mega-Death was about to hit Georgia, she seemed to disappear. She re-appeared a few meters to the left of where she once was, and Mega-Death missed her entirely. Shattered Dreams manifested, floating in front of Georgia.
“...It's a simpler ability than yours, no?” said Georgia. “But because of it, I'm able to change where I appear to be at any time. You can't hit me if you don't know where I am! Now, Shattered Dreams!”
The glasswork stand flew up to the lone incandescent light at the top of the classroom. The light was focused through its body, and zapped Caligula in the eyes.
Caligula yelped in pain.
“The problem with fighting stand users is that they usually have two sets of eyes,” said Georgia. “Shattered Dreams can only refract light in one location – so if you and your stand aren't in the same place, you can see through my illusions pretty easily. But if I blind one of you... that's not a problem anymore!”
Mega-Death rushed towards Georgia again. It jumped at her, but again Georgia disappeared just as it was about to hit her. The pint-size stand slammed against a wall.
“Your stand – it's not very smart, is it?” said Georgia with a smirk.
“No, it isn't... but I am!” yelled Caligula. “These contact lenses aren't just for show – they also protect my eyes from bright lights! And from this perspective, I knew exactly how your stand was refracting light! So as you can see... I didn't care about attacking you in the first place! My true target was the wall!”
Georgia turned away from the silver-haired woman. Mega-Death stood at the edge of the room – holding an insulated wire that it tore out of the wall.
“Now, Mega-Death! Turn the bromine in that wire into caesium!”
Mega-Death's hands squeezed the wire. There was a blinding light, and an explosion rocked the classroom, blasting a hole in the wall. Shattered Dreams manifested in front of Georgia and attempted to block. However, the shockwave was too powerful, and cracked the surface of the glasswork stand. Cuts appeared all over Georgia's body. Georgia fell to the ground, her eyes squeezed shut from the pain of the light. Shattered Dreams disappeared. Risotto Caligula walked up to Georgia.
“Now who's the blinded one?!” said Caligula. “It's over, Giorno’s brat. Even attempting to stand up to a fighter with my experience was foolish!
“Those contacts are pretty good. They were able to protect your eyes from light focused through Shattered Dreams,” said Georgia. “Unfortunately for you... I also have a way of protecting my eyes.”
Georgia opened her eyes, as Shattered Dreams once again became visible. Its palm was inches from Caligula's face.
“Shattered Dreams, release!”
An extraordinarily bright beam of light blasted from Shattered Dreams's hand and into Caligula's eyes. The contacts fell out, and Caligula screamed in agony as an audible sizzle emitted from her corneas.
“My stand isn't just able to redirect light on the spot – it can also trap light inside its body for later release!” shouted Georgia. “Now, Risotto Caligula, feel the power of Shattered Dreams!”
