“Shane…” Rowan tried to wake him once again, she couldn’t blame him for falling asleep every time. “Time to wake up. You can’t keep falling asleep. Every time you do something bad happens.”
He opened his eyes sleepily and felt rather groggy. It felt like he had only closed his eyes for a second, but his left arm had fallen asleep without him noticing. He moved it from under his head a little annoyed and wanted to close his eyes again.
Suddenly he realized what Rowan said, and the last time she woke him up something was very wrong. He sat up and almost hit his head against Rowan's, who was hanging above him, and looking at him with her gray eyes. She quickly backed away and fell on her butt.
When Shane looked around in a panic he noticed that nothing seemed wrong at all. The park was still there, everything was as quiet as before he closed his eyes and they were the only ones on the grass.
“Wait, what? Something happened?” he asked a little confused, but mostly annoyed.
“Well, I thought you wanted to know, but apparently not.”
Rowan crossed her arms defiantly and looked away from him on purpose. He could tell she was just teasing him because she wasn't being snarky and he was pretty sure he saw the corners of her lips twitch up. Unfortunately, Shane was not in a very good mood, nor did he react the way he usually did.
“Come on, Rowan. Just tell me.”
She sighed. “Alright. I’m pretty sure the Tuner is ready for the next portal.”
This made Shane smile a bit as he leaped to his feet. He could see that she was indeed holding the Tuner. Rowan got up too, a bit stiffer and not as graceful as Shane did. They were both standing up now, Rowan looked around and no one seemed to be near them. Shane stretched out his hand to get some feeling back into it.
She started pressing the buttons and Shane's stomach felt a bit weird, like he was excited to see if the next dimension was his, but also dread for what was waiting for them if it wasn't. This one wasn't that bad and they were able to catch their breath, but he didn't want to know what else was out there.
The ground beneath their feet began to vibrate and the corners of Rowan's lips twitched up. The portal began to open, and this time they both waited patiently for it to finish. While they were waiting, Shane felt the strange urge to grab Rowan’s hand and hold it tightly while they both stepped through. He just ignored this urge and didn’t say anything. He was sure it was only because the traveling was stressing him out.
“Hoping for the best,” Rowan said before stepping through first. Shane followed quickly behind.
