Mary, Kate, and Charlie managed to get to a small trail by the side of the river. Kate dragged Charlie to the shore as he gained back consciousness. Mary scanned the water in hopes of finding Ian and Charlie. After a few moments of searching, she found someone.
“Ian!” Mary screamed as she saw Ian trying to swim up to the trail, kicking his right leg as his left leg stayed still. Mary dived back into the water and swam up to Ian. Suddenly, a small wave pushed Mary and Ian down the river. Mary knew she couldn’t die today, wouldn’t die today. She screamed in agony as she fought the currents, slowly making her way back to Kate and Charlie. Mary managed to slowly crawl up onto the shore, dragging Ian up.
“Ow,” Ian exclaimed as his leg bumped a rock, “I think it’s broken.” He added on, sighing as he looked at his leg.
“Wait, where’s Mateo?” Kate shouted as she scanned the water for him. Kate looked on for a few minutes, only to see Mateo’s motionless body, drifting down the river.
“No,” Charlie whispered, “No, NO!!!” He screamed, tears starting to roll down his face.
“No, he can’t be-” Kate started, only to hear a small group of people.
“They should be around here.” a loud voice announced, getting closer and closer by the second. Kate, Mary, Charlie, and Ian all started to hear the footsteps, pounding along the trail.
“Quickly, dive into the water,” Kate whispered, helping Ian dive just underneath the water. They all took a long breath before they submerged themselves in the water. When the small group of people that was trying to find them, they just had carried a small lamp, two flashlights, and a walkie-talkie. The small group stopped, looked around for a moment, and then continued down the trail. After a few short moments, Kate popped her head out from underneath the water. Followed by Mary, Charlie, and finally, Ian, whose face started to turn purple.
“You didn’t need to stay that long underwater, you know,” Kate murmured to Ian.
“Well, you can never be sure,” Ian stated, “By the way, who were those people?”
“Probably some people who saw us falling over the edge and wanted to catch us. After all, it is illegal to go over the falls without unauthorized permission. And, we’re on the Canadian side now so that’s also illegal to do so without a passport.” Mary explained.
“So now we’re criminals?!” Charlie darted towards Mary.
“Kinda…” Mary replied, her voice trailing off, “Anyways, we need to get out of here.” Mary added, “Before you know it this place is going to be crowded.”
“How do you know that?” Charlie asked Mary, raising an eyebrow.
“Mateo told me when we got to the park, before he, well, yeah,” Mary replied, starting to get up onto the trail and walk. “This way.” She pointed towards where the group of other people had come from.
“Ow,” Ian mumbled as he tried to stumble along the trail, hopping on his right leg.
“Here, let me help.” Mary offered Ian. Ian put one hand on Mary’s shoulder and Ian used the shoulder as a balancing point. Ian still hopped along the trail, trying to stay steady as the group made their way up to Niagara, Canada.
