Akira looked at himself in the mirror for what felt like the hundredth time in the past hour. It was almost six and he was dressed in a nice suit that he honestly didn’t feel really suited him at all. He was just too slight in frame to really pull off a suit like this. He looked at the clock before glancing at himself again and took off the suit jacket. Okay, that looked a bit better. He nodded at himself in the mirror when he heard a knock on the door. “shit,” he murmured to himself and headed over to the door and opened, “Um… oh, oh wow,” he said and opened the door fully to an indeed dressed to the nines Edward, complete with flowers for Akira.
Akira blinked at Edward, “Wow, you look amazing.”
Edward smiled and stepped into the apartment handing Akira the flowers, “Hmm, I’m pretty sure I’m supposed to be saying that about you,” he said and eyed Akira, “which by the way, you look amazing as well.”
Akira shook his head as he took the flowers and headed into the kitchen to place them in a vase. When he found a vase to put the flowers in, he quickly filled it with water and stuck the flowers in it. “So where are we going for this dinner?” he asked.
Edward shook his head “not telling.” He smirked, “you’ll just have to come with me and find out.” He chuckled and gave his arm out to Akira, “ready?” he asked.
Akira looked at the arm and licked his lips before taking the arm “yeah. I’m ready.”
With that they headed out, Akira was surprised to find a car waiting outside for them and that Edward could actually drive. He had never actually learned, not that he really needed to, as he tended to walk everywhere that he went, or if it was too far he would take the bus. He got into the car and was looking out the window as Edward drove off into the distance. They had to have been driving for about half an hour before Akira finally started to get worried about where they were going. He looked over to Edward, who glanced over to him and chuckled.
“Sorry, maybe I should have told you the place is a little far,” he said and looked back to the road, “we’re almost there though, just a few more minutes.”
Akira sighed before returning back to looking out the window and settling into the car, sure enough, a few minutes later they were pulling into a parking lot of a very fancy-looking building. He looked over to Edward again. “Edward, I don’t think…”
“It’s okay, I got it,” Edward said, “after all, I’m the one taking you out on this date, aren’t I?” he asked.
Akira nodded and bit his lip. He really was growing uncomfortable with this. Edward seemed genuinely interested in this. Akira wasn’t so sure if he was interested in Edward like that, but then again, wasn’t that what dates were for? To see if you were interested in someone. So, they had done this whole thing a little backward. No huge deal. He smiled to himself and followed Edward into the restaurant.
He was amazed by the place. He had never been to a place so nice and he was suddenly glad that he had brought his suit jacket with him because he felt awkward without it on here. He pulled the jacket on and sat down in the seat that the waiter took them to. He was given a menu and he looked at it, he nearly dropped it when he saw the prices of things.
“Don’t look at that,” Edward said, “the price isn’t a big deal, just get what you want.”
“I- um… well, that’s another problem, I don’t even know what half of this stuff is.”
Edward looked up and laughed, “Ah, sorry I forgot they wrote most of the menu in French,” he said and pushed the top of Akira’s menu down a little bit and began to translate for the man.
Akira watched Edward translate, “so you speak French?” he asked.
Edward laughed, “I would have thought that had been obvious by now. But yes, I’m French.”
“How…” he trailed off, they had never really asked things like this before, just fucked around and that was it. “I catch you speaking Japanese at times though, or you understand when I’m speaking on the phone in Japanese…how did you learn it?” he asked.
“Hmm? Oh, well my father is Japanese… well, my adoptive father is,” He explained and shrugged, “not to mention my best friend, Hiroki,” he smiled, “they taught me because there was no reason that I shouldn’t learn it.”
Akira nodded and looked up to the waiter who had shown up, “uh…” he looked back down at the menu and he was about to try and say what he wanted before he gave up and just pointed.
Edward chuckled and ordered his meal before handing both menus to the man and returned to waiting for their meal to come out. “So… you should tell me about yourself. That’s how these things work, you know,” he said after a strange silence that came over to two.
Akira opened his mouth a little bit and shrugged “not much to tell really, grew up in Japan and a little while in Germany and then moved here. Work as a waiter at the café and like to bake,” he said, shrugging again.
Edward rolled his eyes, “that is not the entire Akira, and you know it. Tell me something about yourself that isn’t obvious.”
Akira pushed his hair out of his face and thought about it, something that wasn’t obvious about himself? “I was raised by my brother since I was ten.”
Edward tilted his head “Why? What happened to your parents?”
“They died. My brother is a lot older than me, by 8 years actually, so he was able to become my legal guardian. It was pretty cool; he was really caring and whatnot. He did his best that he could with me. I was kind of a wild child,” Akira said as he flipped his hair a bit “hence the hair. I’ve had it ever since I was 14,” he said, rolling his eyes. “My brother had a fit and threatened to throw me out of the house.” He chuckled and smiled, thinking about the time that his older brother freaked on him about his hair. “I didn’t change it… and I didn’t get thrown out of the house. So lucky me, I guess,” he said, before fidgeting in his seat, “What about you? What’s something that isn’t obvious about you?” he asked.
Edward thought about it. “Not much really, I’m usually pretty straightforward about everything that I am. I mean, you know I’m a thief, and that I’m adopted. I speak French, Japanese, and English.” He explained, “Um… I used to be part of a gang but got out when I was 16 because I couldn’t handle what they wanted me to do. I’ve been running ever since,” He said, shrugging. “Oh, I didn’t graduate from elementary school either.” He added after a few seconds.
Akira smiled and shook his head “I see, what an entertaining life, it seems.” He looked down at the table. He felt very at ease with Edward here. Even after hearing everything he had. “wait… is that how we are here?” he asked, looking around the restaurant again, “you’ve… you’re going to pay for all of this with stolen money aren’t you?’ he asked.
Edward gave an apologetic smile, “if it makes you feel better, it’s old stolen money… like months ago. And it was only from some rich assholes?” he tried, he figured that would be brought up and he was a bit worried about telling Akira about it. “Again, don’t worry about it. It’s not a huge deal. It’s not like I stole the suit or the car.”
“Where did the car come from?” Akira asked, his face not amused in the slightest with the attempted joke.
“I’m serious! I didn’t steal the car. It’s my best friend, Hiroki, remember? I told you about him before. He helped me learn Japanese.”
Akira eyed Edward for a moment trying to decide if he was telling the truth or not. “I’ll give you the car, but I’m sure the suit was bought with stolen money. So that you don’t get to get off on,” he said, frowning. His frown quickly changed when he saw the waiter and smiled, nodding to him as he placed the food down on the table.
Edward sighed “Okay, fine,” he said, “It’s really not a huge deal though.”
“It’s why the police were after you when we met.”
“I- well, I mean, yeah, but we got away, didn’t we?”
“Your point being?” Akira asked as he took a bite of his food.
“That we got away therefore it wasn’t a huge deal.” Edward smiled and tucked into his own meal. “Come on, let’s not talk about it and just enjoy the meal and date.”
Akira nodded after a bit and started to eat slowly as they moved into a random discussion, talking about their likes and dislikes. It honestly was a genuinely nice dinner. After which they headed to the movies and Akira was quickly in Edward’s arms, hiding his face from seeing the scary movie that Edward had chosen for them to watch. Clearly, the man had another motive for going to the movies, but other than holding Akira in his arms he made no other moves.
Once the movie was over they went home and Edward walked him up to his apartment and kissed him goodnight and then left. Akira stood at the door and watched the man drive the car off and looked almost stunned. Edward honestly made it a proper date. He didn’t try to be inappropriate with Akira or even suggest that he might be.
Akira was stunned by everything that had happened that night. He looked down at the keys in his hand and unlocked the door to his apartment, going inside and heading to bed. He had a lot of thinking to do.
