Emmett’s POV
I sat in my office, tapping my finger against the hard oak wood desk, and looked at my phone. The doctor called to tell me he was letting Sam go later today since his arm was fully healed.
I know Sam told me he was human but there had to be more to it than that. I didn't smell any trace of shifter or magic on him when I smelled him as he slept. I even had Mason, one of my betas, double-check just to make sure because all I could truly smell was the delicious scent of him that made me want to devour him the closer I got. But even Mason didn't smell anything off.
Not all shifts had the ability to regenerate like we did but most of them did and I knew of a spell that witches could cast to speed the healing process but no one else was in the room without me here. No one could have slipped him vampire's blood either. I would have smelled that out before they came too close to him. So all of that led me to one question, what kind of human could heal like that?
My thoughts were broken as I heard a knock at the door before Luke, the leader of my tracker team, walked in. "My alpha, we are ready to go whenever you are,” he told me as he stood there dressed in normal street clothes with his blond hair hanging down so he would be able to blend in with the crowds better.
"We better leave now then."

I looked over the edge of the hospital building as me, Mason and Brian stood on the roof and waited. Luke and his trackers stood on the rooftops across the street or hidden on the crowded sidewalks watching the entrance. The doctor just called and told me he told Sam he was free to go and was getting his papers ready but I had a feeling he wasn't going to wait for those.
Not long after that thought, Sam walked out alone and without them in hand. I smiled a little at how cute he looked in that big fluffy coat while Mason called Luke.
"That's him. Yes, blue coat. Are the trackers working? ... Good. Do they have his scent from the bloody clothes? ... Okay. Keep us updated,” he ordered them in his deep voice.
"Do you think he will be safe enough?" I asked him as I looked over to see him tie back his long charry blond hair that was blowing around from the wind. Most likely annoying him.
"Of course, Alpha. Luke and his team are some of the best trackers your father trained before you took over the pack. Why are you worried for the boy's safety so much anyway?" He asked as he looked through the binoculars after Sam. "It's who he is working for that we are after, right?"
I sighed deeply to myself trying to hold back my real feelings about the matter. "Of course but the boy seems innocent enough. He did give up the phone without a fight and he was being truthful when he told us he didn't know who hired him. I don't want him getting hurt or killed. I mean what if he was just a boy down on his luck and needed money or the people who hired him made him do it because they were holding something over his head?"
Brian looked over at me with a weird confused look. "Why are you so concerned about the boy? Normally you don't care what happens to human bait like this."
I couldn't stop the growl that rose from my throat as I showed him my teeth. "Don't call him bait like that. And he is... different than a normal human so I'm curious as to what he is. I mean he did almost outrun the both of you in your wolf forms and he heals fast too. Those wounds honestly should have killed him and yet here he is a week later walking out of the hospital on his own with only a few bruises to show for it. After we find out who he is working for I want him back. So Luke and his team better keep two eyes on him at all time," I told them with a hint of anger in the last sentence as I watched Sam disappear around the corner.
I looked down at the ground for a moment then at the rooftops to see all the trackers gone. They couldn't know what Sam is to me yet. I had to do this as my father told me to do. It's what's best for the pack and keeping them safe is always my top priority as their alpha leader.
I looked over at my two betas again. "Go with them, Mason. Keep the boy in your sight but keep to the shadows. I'll check in with you tomorrow and keep me updated. I don't care if it's the same update as Luke. I want to hear it from you as well. Brian, with me."
Without another word, they both nodded as Mason headed out but Brian stopped and looked at me with a knowing smile.
"You can’t fool us. That boy is your fated mate, isn't he, Alpha?" He asked.

Sam's POV
I headed straight for my shelter after leaving the hospital, hoping to whatever god was out there that some crazy nut wasn't nesting in it since it's been empty for a whole week. Really wasn't in the mood to fight someone for what I worked so hard to build and save up for.
I was also worried because I left everything I had in that tent, like an idiot, because I was planning on going right back the day I took Emmett's phone. I didn't want to take anything with me just in case something happened, it would only slow me down.
It took most of the day to walk back to that part of the city as I took a man's wallet, to find a few dollars in it, and also found a new beanie since my last one fell off when I was being chased by the huge ass wolves. This one was purple but I didn't care about the color. It would still keep my ears warm in the cold months ahead.
I decided to stop by to see Lexi and Steven before I made it to my place since it was on my way. I turned down the alley close by and started my way when I heard something around the corner. It sounded like heavy muffled breathing.
I walked closer and peeked around the corner to check out what was going on and froze at the sight in front of me.
Steven's chest was pressed against the brick wall, he's pants dropped to his knees, and moaned loudly into a hand that was covering his mouth as a bigger darker-skinned man was thrusting into him from behind.
He held Steven close to him making my first thought be he was raping Steven. I started forward to stop it and help my friend but stopped when the man uncovered Steven's mouth and Steven kissed him hard between moans. Reaching one hand around the back of the man's neck, he pulled him closer. "Ahh. Just... like that," he moaned before taking his other hand off the wall in front of him to start stroking himself as the man held him from smacking his face against the brick wall.
I backed away and hid behind the wall again, covering my mouth so they wouldn't hear me. I shouldn't have seen that. I really, really shouldn't have seen that.
I could hear the man start to get a little louder. "I'm almost there baby," he moaned. "Cum first for me baby boy," he told Steven as I heard his muffled cry.
The man made a gasping sound and Steven said something so I looked around the corner again, thinking they were done.
Steven was on his knees as the man started to finish in his mouth and stood still for a moment before stepping back a little wobbly while he fixed his black basketball shorts and then helped Steven up. He used his thumb to wipe the corner of Steven's mouth while Steven smiled and pulled up his own pants before they started kissing each other. He picked Steven up in his arms as Steven wrapped his arms and legs around him with a giggle against the man's lips before they started kissing again in a more heated kiss.
The man kissed down his cheek and stopped at his neck. Taking his time there, Steven's mouth dropped open in pleasure.
I couldn't hear what the man was whispering to him as he pulled away from his neck but it made Steven's face turn bright red as they kissed a few more times before he put him back down on his feet.
They were talking for a moment in a low voice when the man handed him some money and kissed Steven a few times on the cheek, ear, and nose playfully before he walked away leaving Steven to look at the ground with a quickly fading smile.
My eyes were wide in surprise, I never would have thought Steven would drop so low to sell himself for money like that. I know it's hard out here and we all go through a rough patch but I would never. He knew he could can to me for whatever he needed and I would do anything I could to help him and Lexi.
Steven pushed off the wall, shoving the money in his pocket as he looked up and froze when he saw me stepping out from the corner.
"Ooh, h- hey Sam," he stuttered as his face turned pale. "How- how have you been? You umm, you just get here?"
I shook my head in disappointment and raised an eyebrow at him as he stepped back. His eyes grew wider as he looked at where he was just having sex with that guy and then quickly back at me, his face turning red.
"That- that wasn't what it looked like," he said, starting to look panicked. “I swear.”
"Okay. Then please explain it to me," I said with anger in my voice. I was so mad. “Because it looked pretty clear to me.”
"It's... complicated," he said looking at the ground, biting his thumbnail.
"Then uncomplicate it. I mean fuck Steven, now you're selling yourself for-,"
"That's not-, ugh," he huffed in anger. "You know what! It's none of your business where I get my money from!" He yelled defensively and stormed off as I just stood there and watched him leave.
I wanted to punch him in the face but I shook it off and started my way back home. I just needed to get home already and deal with this another time.
