They had spent the whole day together. Going around the aquarium looking at all the different sea creatures, walking through the gift shop but ultimately not buying anything. Now they were laying on a blanket outside looking up at the stars. Today had been the best day for him, he had met her little over a year ago. That day had changed everything for him.
When they first met he knew that she was the one. The way she smiled at every little thing. The way she laughed at his god awful jokes. The way she cared for others. The way she spread joy everywhere they went. The way she’s always radiating sunshine. The way her eyes sparkled when she talked about something she loved. The way her eyes would grow big with curiosity. The way she always looked at both sides of a situation. The way she tried her best to help those around her. The way she always knew how to make him feel better, even with tears in his eyes. The way she always knew how to make him smile. The way she listened to him, even when he said very little. The way she had accepted him for who he was.
The night was still warm but he had an extra blanket in case she got cold. They stared up at the night sky, laying in a comfortable silence. One that he didn’t realize he could have with anyone and one that he didn’t realize how much he craved. Everywhere there’s noise. Irritating noise. But with her there’s silence, beautiful silence. He was thankful that she was okay with the silence between them. She normally talks, a whole lot too. That’s the only sound that didn’t irritate him. At this moment she didn’t speak, but stared up at the sky. Looking over every single star. He knew that she was curious, that’s why she wasn’t speaking. She was coming up with different theories in her head. Thinking of different stories to tell, just to make someone else smile.
She gasped and tapped his arm, pointing up at the sky. He followed her arm and saw that she was pointing at a constellation. She giggled at the fact that she was able to point one out. He had stopped looking up at the star and looked over at her. Her features weren’t visible in the dark but he had memorized her face and knew what her smile looked like. He continued to stare at her until she turned her head over to him. They stared at each other, he started smiling; knowing she was too.
“What?” She whispered.
“Nothing.” He breathed.
She giggled again and turned to look back up at the stars. He wanted her to face him again, so he could stare into her gorgeous eyes. The color had mixed in with the night but he still wanted to see her. He wanted her to see him.
She knows his flaws and he knows hers. There wasn’t anything that he was hiding from her and he deeply believed that there wasn’t anything she was hiding from him. Which is true, she wasn’t. They both knew that they liked each other, except he had fallen head over heels for her. His eyes trailed down her arm and landed on her hand. He slowly moved his hand until her fingers intertwined with his. She scooted closer to him, giving him butterflies. While she looked up at the stars, he was looking at their hands. They were holding hands, something that he thought a year ago was impossible.
He had always felt like a second option with people but with her he wasn’t. She would choose him over any other guy that came up against him. She made him feel like he could conquer the world as long as she was right there with him. No challenge seemed too big for him with her by his side. He rubbed his thumb over hers, which she returned. He felt his heart skip a beat. She squeezed his hand and he looked over at her. She was staring back at him.
“Silly we’re stargazing, not handgazing.” She joked
He half laughed at the joke, turning his head up to the stars. There were so many of them, twinkling. He saw a shooting star and began to wish. He knew that anyone else would think that it’s a stupid thing to wish on a shooting star and that it’s not real; but he didn’t care.
“Please.” He whispered.
“What did you wish for?”
He didn’t say anything but hummed a response.
“Right, don’t say the wish out loud or it won’t come true.”
They went quiet once again. She looked up at the stars, letting go of his hand and preteding to draw a line between each star. Looking for more constellations or just random shapes she could make.
He slowly moved his arm around her, making her lift her head and putting it on his shoulder. Not veering from her task at hand. She connected star after star until her arms ached. She let them drop down but one hand wandered until their fingers intertwined with each other again. He started humming to himself but she soon joined in with him. Humming nothing in particular, just nonsense. When she scooted closer to him, he grabbed the extra blanket and threw it over both of them. Trapping the warmth between them. She pointed out yet another constellation, waiting till he hummed a response.
“Can I tell you a story I came up with for the stars?”
“Yes.”
She started her story, occasionally putting up her hands to express something; but one hand always found it’s way back into his. He enjoyed this time with her. The quiet outside with only her story to fill the silence. He was never much of a talker, people would tease or nag him about speaking. Saying that he can’t get far in life with his lips glued together but why would he want to speak. If he spoke then he wouldn’t be able to listen to her voice.
