I stand there helplessly and watch Eugene fall into the forest, unsure of what's happening. I hadn't run a current through his body, let alone prepared anything to bring him back to life.
Iggy turns to see what I'm staring at and he gasps at the sight of our experiment wandering off. "Dude, what the hell did you do?"
"I don't know!" I shout, my voice cracking. "This wasn't part of my plan at all!"
Iggy shoves me aside and heads for the back door. "We have to get him before he kills somebody, Brown!"
I start after him and then stop, grabbing a fireplace poker before slamming outside after him. The yard is wet and sticky from a light rain starting up, and the wind slaps my face, ice cold. It's like a horror movie that I can't escape from.
Iggy and I run across the yard like maniacs and explode into the woods.
How fast could a dead boy travel?
Worst of all, what happens when said dead boy doesn't know that he's dead?
There's an explosion of sound to our left and then Eugene is running, falling over himself. "There he is!" I shout, and Iggy and I run after him, my fireplace poker raised over my head, just in case Eugene decides to turn on us and eat our faces off like it's cafeteria pizza.
"Eugène!" I call to him. "Eugene, my love!"
When Eugene turns to look at us, he sees Iggy, and then he sees me and a look of anger crosses his expression. I'm sure that seeing the last person who leaned over him while he died wasn't a pleasant sight. Either that or I had painted on my eyeliner a little too heavily this time around.
"Oh fuck, he's coming this way." Iggy hisses at me. "What do we do now?"
I stand there like an idiot while Eugene storms back through the bushes, barreling right towards me. "I fucking knew you had something to do with this, McCreepy!" He shouts. "What the FUCK is going on you gothic little shit stain? " He reaches down and grabs me by the front of my jacket, twisting a handful in his fist.
I stare up at him in total awe. It's Eugene, fully conscious. His skin still has a waxy appearance, a layer of makeup caked over his face. His hands are ice cold, but everything seems to be in working order.
"What did you do?" Eugene hisses at me and shakes me back and forth.
Iggy falls to his knees, and he begins to cry like a little baby. "You died, bro. You totally died and just left all of us behind. " He sobs into the dirt, leaning forward so that he's practically over Eugene's purple-tinged toes. "Brown decided to bring you back to life. He kidnapped you from your own funeral and... and, I don't know man! "
Eugene's eyes shift from Iggy to me and back again. His chest rises and falls quickly,
"Eugene, calm down," I tell him quietly, and I reach up to close my hands over his, "You're okay now. I brought you back to life so you could have a chance at finishing high school. "
Eugene drops me and stumbles back a little, covering his face. "No, no, no..." He mumbles under his breath. "Are you seriously telling me that I'm a fucking corpse right now?" He screams.
I fall backward and land on my ass, staring up at him. "We're not really sure what you are," I admit and glance over at Iggy, who's looking at Eugene like he's the best thing on the planet.
"Gene, dude." Iggy stands up and puts a hand on his shoulder. "Look at it this way. Now we can pick on McCreepy again. We can do all the shit that we wanted to do. " He's grinning like crazy. It's like everything's back to normal when it's not.
"No, we can't. Because I'm dead you moron. " Eugene snarls at him. "What's everyone going to say when I show up back at school after dying in the middle of the floor? Did you two shitheads even think about that? Huh? " His eyes are blazing. I raise my poker to hit him, but he doesn't raise a hand to hit us or anything.
"I just want to go home," Eugene mutters, and then storms past us, ambling into the woods.
"Eugene!"I shout at him and scramble to my feet. "Wait a second!" I follow him into the bushes, branches tearing at my skin and hair as I jog to catch up to him. He moves pretty fast for being undead, I'll admit. If he wasn't so waxy-looking, I almost would have mistaken him for being alive.
When I finally catch up to Eugene, he's crying against a tree.
"Eugène?"
Eugene sniffs and sobs, quickly rubbing his face with his hands. "Go away, Darcy." He growls, "You messed everything up, starting with that stupid ass frog."
I go over to him, "Eugene, you didn't die from the frog." I tell him quietly. "You had something wrong with your heart. It was only a matter of time before you croaked. I was the one next to you when it happened. "
Eugene sniffs again and then peers down at me. "Something was wrong with my heart?"
I nod my head.
Eugene rubs his eyes and turns to face me, "What the hell are you talking about? I had a physical, like, a week before I died. How could something be wrong with my heart? "
Oh, Shit.
