Rowan looked at him, at his quietly rising and falling chest showing that he fell asleep. She looked at his dark hair, which was a little wavy and wild, and stuck to his forehead, at his broad forearms that were loosely folded and resting on his chest.
He looked a lot younger when he slept, his face entirely relaxed. When he was awake he seemed quite mature and perhaps a little try-hard, although he could act really childish at times. Maybe it was his stubbornness, or the fact that he probably couldn't bear to be wrong about something.
Every so often the corners of Shane’s lips curled up slightly and a tiny smile appeared on his face. Rowan could hear his stomach growling, which reminded her of her own hunger. She considered it to be very fortunate that he didn't snore and didn't attract animals with the loud sounds. Who knows how big the normal animals were in this dimension.
The cave was getting darker over time, the weak silvery light coming from the moon replacing the orange of the sundown that came through the small hole above them. It wasn’t a lot, but she could still make out Shane’s silhouet and most of his features.
She herself didn't really manage to fall asleep. She had dozed off a few times, but seemed to be woken up from every noise, no matter how small. Being in a new environment always made her more alert, more watchful, it just happened automatically. So far it had always proven useful. She was tired, but she just couldn't sleep.
She ran her tongue over her chapped lips, hoping the next time they jumped dimensions, they would finally get back home, or at least a place she knew. They both needed water and, of course, food. It would be even better to get back to Shane’s dimension so she could get rid of him and figure the rest out herself.
Rowan was startled by a noise outside the cave. She glanced shortly at Shane, who responded in his sleep by smacking his lips softly and unaffected, moving around slightly but he didn't seem to be waking up.
She heard the sound again and a little bit of dust started to come down from the ceiling. This caused Rowan to stand up and shuffle toward the entrance of the cave as quietly as possible. She tried to peek around the corner, but it was very dark outside so she couldn't see much. A cloud moved, revealing the moon so it was able cast its light upon the world. The light bounced off several swarming dark green glowing armors.
“Shane!” she hissed loudly to wake him up, since a little extra sounds wouldn’t matter anymore. “Wake up!”
Shane opened his eyes reluctantly and mostly in a daze. Rowan was already grabbing her sweater from the ground and flung her backpack on her back and going through the pockets of her hoodie in search of the Tuner.
The banging sound got louder and faster, bigger pieces of debris were falling down, followed by a loud cracking sound. It was only getting louder and louder and was exactly the reason why she was this alert. They had no time to lose and nowhere to go if the Tuner still didn’t work.
Shane finally caught up about what was going on and got up. He stumbled slightly, but balanced himself. Rowan barely noticed, she was busy concentrating and pushing the right buttons on the Tuner.
“Please, please, do what I say, just this once,” she murmured, softly pleading to the device.
Because the beetles kept flinging themselves against the other side of the cave making it entirely unstable, they couldn't even feel the slight trembling under their feet that was slowly starting to increase.
Rowan's plea got answered, a crack appeared in the wall opposite from them and quickly expanded, casting a dim light. She grinned broadly and shoved Shane towards the crack, causing him to stumble through it. Then she stepped through it herself.
The crack closed by itself behind them, just in time. The banging of the beetles caused the stone to crack even further and the cave collapsed in on itself.
