I sat down at my desk and watched as the students started piling in the room, talking about who knows what. Just as every day, Rowly came to my desk again.
"So, what'd you have for lunch.
"Pizza," I answered, then went back to grading papers. I graded his earlier, and I'm surprised he did well when all he does is talk.
"That was one of our lunch options today. You know. Ms. May, you are one terrible liar.
I put the papers down and looked at him. "Please, just go sit down. I need to finish this."
"Yeah, yeah, but I have to ask you something."
"What is it, Rowly."
"So, I saw you talking to a student earlier,"
I looked at him sternly. Did he see? I said I'd tell everyone, but was at lunch. Wasn't he?
"And you looked like a perfect candidate for a guidance counselor!"
I sighed, "Is that it?"
"And I have a really bad crush. See, I've liked her for three years, so I was going to ask if you could put us in a group together." She blushed and looked down.
I chuckled, "Sure, but please do your homework today."
He smiled, "Thanks, Ms. May. You are ow my favorite person. After Mary."
Mary. Wait, isn't she Sarah's crush. Who is Mary?
"Can you point her out to me, just so I know who she is?"
"How do you not know Mary? She's over there." He pointed by the door, and I suddenly understood what they both saw. She had the highest ponytail and the most hair I have ever seen on a human head. Welp, hate to say it, but that girl does look beautiful.
"See what I mean." He leaned on my desk and looked in the same direction I was staring at. "Angel. No doubt."
"Okay, but have you noticed that she might like someone else. Do you know anything about her?"
Rowly held up ten fingers, "I know a whole ten things about her. She doesn't go to recess, she's a vegetarian, she's learning to play the trombone, and-"
"Ms. Argenten, something has come up. You need to take Ms. Spore home please." I looked up and saw Mr. Manro from next door.
I got up and quickly ran to the door. "What's wrong with her? Is she okay? She's okay, right?" I started hyperventilating.
He patted my back and led me outside into the hallway. "I don't think it's serious. Her desk just tipped over on her leg."
Why in the world was he calm about this. Lillian doesn't have a very strong anything. She has a brain, but that's the only thing that's really protected. And how did a whole desk fall on her?
"She's outside, so you two can get going to the hospital."
He hugged me, but that did nothing to settle my anxiety. Nothing except Lillian has ever been able to cure it, and apparently, it's going to stay that way for a while.
We walked to the office, gaining a couple of stares from students and teachers who walked by. My eyes were a little watery by now, but I didn't start crying until I got to the office. When I saw Lil sitting in an office chair, crying like she was at home. I probably shouldn't have started crying with her, but that's what her crying does to me. Everything about her is contagious, including her laughter and tears.
"Are you okay," I sat down next to the chair and took her hand.
She didn't nod or shake her head.
I wiped my tears and stood up." Come on, we're going home." I bent down a scooped her up in my arms. "How much does it hurt?"
"Not a lot." She whispered.
I nodded. I knew she was lying. She did this every time she got hurt, she'd just pretend it wasn't there. Though, this time, she did admit she was in pain, even for a little bit.
"See you tomorrow?" I looked at the teachers surrounding us.
"Maybe next week?" Mrs.Stone said.
"What?"
Mrs.Stone put a hand on my shoulder," She might say it doesn't hurt, but I honestly don't believe her."
"Come on!" Lillian crossed her arms.
"You don't admit to anything often. If it does hurt, then you would've just said nothing."
Lillian rolled her eyes." Well, fine! It hurts so much and that I don't have a problem with her carrying me. Is that it?"
"I was wondering why she wasn't arguing."
Mrs.Stone pushed me out of the door. "Please, get your girlfriend well. She is a high school teacher. We kinda need her here."
I waved, but not really since Lil was still in my arms. I walked out of the door and headed to our car. I had a little trouble fitting her in without her screaming or groaning, so I just played her down in the back.
The drive home was basically just the pop music that we always listen to. Though, it wasn't as fun without her blasting the notes. When we finally got home, I got her from the back seat and lead her up the steps to the apartment. We were talking about getting a house, but we both don't seem to like not having close neighbors.
When I got to our door, I checked in my pocket for my keys.
Since they weren't there, I checked the other pocket. Then my pants pocket, then my shoes.
"Lil, do you have your keys?"
She squirmed and sighed, "In my coat pocket."
I checked her pocket, and just like she said, there was her key chain. There was a souvenir of our third anniversary on it, too. And a little Minifigure from LEGO.
I used them to unlock the door, then I shut the door quietly once I was inside. Avoiding the majority of the clutter, I made it to our room and laid her on the bed.
I put my hand on her forehead," Are you okay? Can I get you anything?"
She shook her head and sat up. "Sorry for making you worry. I don't even know how I could be so clumsy that a whole desk would just topple over."
I laughed and sat next to her," That is pretty stupid."
"But it hurts to walk and I'm in pain just sitting up, so could you maybe call the doctor?" She tilted her head to the side and smiled nervously.
"What have you done with my lover who doesn't like the hospital?"
"I'm uncomfortable with sitting, and I can't stand?"
I nodded, "Point taken."
"Now," She waved me off and pushed me out of the bed, "Go make that call, and I'll suffer right here."
"Stop, you'll make me cry again." I turned to look at her and she was wincing from pushing too hard.
"Please go. I have never had something fall on me before, and I already hate it."
I nodded, "Yes ma'am."
She didn't tell me where her phone was, so I had to make the assumption that she wanted me to use mine. Maybe I just needed to get her to the emergency room. Why didn't they just call why they heard. Lillian probably told them it wasn't hurting.
I sighed and went to sit on the couch. The hospital isn't a number I know, so I called Dew to help me figure out what to do.
"Hey, Dew? You there?"
"Dude, you do know that the school day isn't over yet, right?"
"Yeah, yeah, whatever."
"What do you need?" Over the phone, I could hear little voices talking pretty loudly. So loud that I think I heard one of them say, "That your wife?" And I'm sure they were referring to me.
"I need the phone number of the nearest hospital. I don't know it by heart cause none of Lillian's injuries have ever been this bad."
"Yeah, Emma had gone there because of some stomach virus."
"Are you sure you should be telling me about this? And shouldn't you be worried?"
"She won't mind. Anyway, how is she?" He shouted to the students, and they went quiet in an instant. He does have a powerful voice.
"In the bed. Nothing serious I think, but she wants me to call the hospital just to check."
"What has she done with the old Lil?" She laughed, and a student started talking again.
"Jamal, stop talking!" Dew sighed," Any who, anything else you wanna talk about?"
"Yeah, put me on the phone with Jamal."
"Okay?" He called Jamal and I heard a lot of 'oohs'. He isn't such a hotshot now, is he?
"Hello?" His voice squirmed a bit.
"I am Ms. Argenten, do you know that?"
"Y-yes."
"And I am your teacher, correct? One of the staff, one of the people who you should not make fun of, no matter what circumstance. It is rude to do this to a teacher, don't you agree?"
"Yes," His voice was a whisper by now.
"And I recommend you to listen to my brother because if I were you, I'd spend more time studying than goofing around and being disrespectful. Now, I want you to sit down and pay attention, and study for your upcoming assignments. Do you understand, Jamal?"
"Yes, Mrs. Argenten."
"As I told you before, I am not married, and I have a girlfriend, so it is plain Ms. Say that any time you address me. Give the phone back to Mr. Argenten."
"Okay,"
"What'd you say to him? Bet it was something smart."
"I always get smart when scolding. It's one of my appealing qualities. But I still need that number."
"Oh, right."
He gave me the number, then he hung up.
Guess my goal will be done next week for sure.
