The mysterious young woman stepped out of the hole on the other side. It rained lightly there, tiny droplets splashing on the black fabric of her hoodie. This was exactly the reason why was wearing this hoodie, it protected her against most types of weather. A versatile piece of clothing like that always came in handy, easy to take off and it provided warmth when it was required.
She always felt a bit uneasy after coming through the gate. This place was quite similar to the one where she just came from, except that the air here was a lot cleaner. However, she didn't have much knowledge of this world, she only came here to do her job, and would leave when it was done. The residents here weren't used to the way she traveled, according to her boss they weren't even ready to find out. The only thing they needed, here, was what she could deliver. They didn't ask questions and didn't want to know where it came from. They were easy here, quickly addicted. She would just as quickly receive her payment and leave again to hand most of it to her boss.
The worn-out backpack she was carrying was heavy, packed for her next delivery. As soon as she stepped through the rift, she looked around warily and started to walk. She had been here a few times before, just enough to have memorized the way. Dimension 19 was a new customer and still very new for her. It had always existed, of course, but they simply hadn't known about it, nor had they known about her.
She didn't notice someone following her from the shadows. Usually on guard all of the time, the young woman was tired from a long and hectic day, she was no longer as cautious. Besides that, she also had to focus on going in the right direction, as she could easily get lost in the fairly unfamiliar surroundings, she hadn't ventured off the path she was supposed to take here.
As she hurried through an alleyway, a huge dog jumped against the fence she passed, barking loudly. She was startled by the sudden noise, her heartbeat sped up and she could feel it beating loudly in her chest. Fortunately there had been a fence in between them. At least she didn't yelp, that would've been embarrassing.
A man dressed in ill fitting dark clothes was waiting at a corner of a junction. She knew he was just a Mule, just like her. They moved these packages from one place to another and brought back money. She was bringing them here, he would probably only pass them along.
He was leaning against the tree on the corner while waiting for her, his arms crossed over his chest, appearing aloof. She could spot the tension and alertness from here, though. Along the road were some low bushes that slightly obscured the view from the intersection and on the other corner was a single house with dark windows like black voids.
The girl slowed down her pace and walked over to the man. Not a word was said between them when she lowered her backpack off her shoulders and showed him the contents by zipping it open. She only handed it to him after he took a thick, beige envelope out of his pocket and let her check the contents. The currency was still fairly new to her, something she had to get used to, but she wasn't the one to exchange it for the right currency anyway. She nodded silently at him, took two packages from her bag and handed them to him. The envelope went back into her backpack and she left without saying anything, quickly swallowed in the dark of the night that was beginning to fall.
