Waking up, Jimmy is still hungry. Having only eaten an apple for the first time in what could have been a week, he gets on his knees to go rummaging through the fridge.
Opening the door back wide open, it is all strange. Darkness. Pure utter darkness covers everything.
From the sides, they are dark silhouettes in the door of the refrigerator, but nothing can really be made out.
[“Don’t worry about that now. I need food.”]
Blindly reaching in for more, he grabs onto where he grabbed the first apple, and feels for another.
[“Why won’t you come out? I need you!”]
Pulling hard, anchoring his knees between the floor and the bottom of the fridge, the apple in his hand will not come out.
Squeezing his hand harder, he can feel a mysterious warmth he felt before, and like magic, he falls back with the apple in hand.
The apple can be seen now, glistening in a shiny red skin, Jimmy sinks his teeth in. Finishing in no time, he goes back for more, grasping hard each time for the warmth to return to his hand as the food pops out each time.
[“I need to stop… What if this lasts for eternity, I won’t survive if all the food disappears in one night”]
Closing the fridge, back to the living room. He sits back where he was right before the incident started.
Holding his arms around his mother, he can feel her warmth still, even though she in all her entirety is now frozen stiff as concrete.
A sudden thought blows through his mind
[“If I feel the warmth in my hand, and it makes food stop being, stuck. Maybe I can do the same with Paul and Mother”]
Holding tighter around his mother, he can feel the warm feeling in both hands as he tries to pull her- it quickly goes away and his hands feel cold as ice, as Jimmy passes out with the feeling of unending exhaustion.
Waking up some time later, he tries again, a bit harder, to no avail.
[“Why? Why must I be stuck in here? Why is my family stuck like this? I have become a prisoner to my own home…”]
Wandering around the house to find something to entertain him, he comes to his room. The door is just barely open enough to squeeze through.
Like the couch in his living room, his bed is stiff as rock, the sheets will not even create a slight wrinkle.
Jimmy walks over to his desk, and using that warm feeling, he struggles a bit as he pulls a pencil and notebook out.
Using his thumb to flip through the pages, it feels wonderful in his hands to finally feel something not like hard stone- but not a sound can be heard.
It annoys him to not hear that. Not a thing this whole time. In a small fit of rage, he throws the notebook at the wall hard- but the lack of sound of it hitting the wall does not feel pleasant.
He picks up his notebook off the floor, and begins to flip to the first empty page- pulling out and stacking the unneeded used ones, containing old thoughts from the time before.
Scribbling begins…
[Rules of the Frozen World]
[Rule 1 – Everything is frozen]
[Rule 2 – Light does not change. If it was not lit before, it will be black and dark. If it was lit before, it will be fine]
[Rule 3 – There is no sound. Not even from one’s own throat]
[Rule 4 – By making a warm feeling in one’s hand, some small frozen things can be unfrozen]
Writing to himself, to talk with himself, to not feel like he is going mental to himself- Jimmy writes the changes he feels and discovers.
Putting the notepad and pencil away in his pocket, he begins to experiment more with what he can pull out from a frozen state. Jimmy decided to call this an ability to him, dubbing it “Return to Life”.
He pulled out nearly all the food from the fridge, leaving it in the kitchen table. He could not figure out how to get the other cabinet doors open, and all the windows and house doors were still frozen shut.
Small, now trinkets, here and there were able to be pulled out with Return to Life, however, any electronic he pulled seamed to do nothing. The TV remote would not change the channel, not even a little red light when a button was pressed; and a digital watch that was sitting on his desk sat without a screen.
With nothing to do, Jimmy goes through every book he can read in the house, whether he would like to before or not, from deep romance novels that his mother liked to read, to some children’s books that his brother would be going through on the afternoon nights.
Jimmy eventually went through them all, at a faster pace than he thought. Reading them twice and thrice through, they stopped giving any entertainment and made his time begin to feel even slower than it was before.
Sitting on his rock-hard bed, Jimmy decides to calm his mind with some meditation like he sees in all the comics and shows. Living with only you and your mind, has not been well. But as he sat there, he could begin to feel calm, without a worry to think about.
Jimmy could start to feel the warmth in his hands come back on their own- but its spreading. Up both his forearms, and quickly to his shoulders. The change startles him out of his meditation.
[“This is... weird. Maybe, like the comics, I am building up some superpower! This must be making me stronger!!”]
Getting up, he tries to use Return to Life on his bed, trying to grip at the top sheet- it comes flying off!
In a small jump over his bed, Jimmy lands on his bed
[“OWWWww!”]
[“The bed itself, is still stuck… Fff, my back”]
At least gaining the top cover of his bed, he can gather other blankets and clothes around the house and build his own little bed. For what could have been a month now, or more or far less, Jimmy has been sleeping on pretty much rock.
[“I should probably fill my stomach, now that I’ve learned some new things”]
Heading to the kitchen, Jimmy finds that some food is already spoiling
[“Oh. Great! I don’t get to sleep in my bed, but microscopic organisms get to eat my food endlessly?”]
Tossing the spoiled food into a corner, all that is left from the fridge is now but just some pickles and condiments.
[“I need to get into those cabinets. I will not survive off drinking ketchup…”]
Giving his first try in a long while to open the cabinet doors, he just fails every time. Calming himself before throwing a fit, he focuses hard, imagining not only the wood of the small door, but also the hinges and them moving- and like magic, it swings open, a bit too hard – smashing his hand into the wall between the door.
[“Ow.. But.. I.. I did it!”]
Looking into the cabinet, [“…kinda.”]
Filling the first cabinet opened, was but just spices. Nothing Jimmy can survive on.
[“Well, onto the next”]
Opening the doors one by one, his food supplies quickly add up, from cans of soup to bags of chips and crackers. Piling up everything onto the table again.
Tired, he has used Return to Life more than ever before, Jimmy is exhausted and lays down like a dog on his pile of clothes and blankets.
Not once has he felt cold or warm since things changed, but wrapping a blanket around made Jimmy feel extra secure.
