“Look!” The man in the broken sunglasses exclaimed, “Look out in the fog, do you see it?”
And then they all looked up to see a shadow in the fog. The figure traipsed forward, she was a slender woman with short red hair and a cast on her arm. The bearded man grunted and furrowed his brow, and the woman in the puffer reached out and flicked him on the shoulder.
“I thought I wasn’t ever going to find anyone. Anyone alive, that is.” The stranger said, revealing a thin, breathy voice and a thick Scottish accent.
The bearded man took off his chained spectacles and pushed the dust around the lenses. He let out a loud huff.
“You mustn't huff like that, it’s rude!” scolded the old woman.
“Bah!” he replied.
“You heard the woman, can it!” The woman in the puffer snapped. The bearded man rolled his eyes. The man in the sunglasses cleared his throat loudly. He looked up at the stranger.
“Who are you?” He demanded, giving his companions the side eye.
“I’m…” The woman paused, “My name is Ruby.” She said tensly. “Might, might I ask who all of you are?” She asked as the old woman patted the space next to her on the trash she was sitting on.
“Sure thing,” said the woman in the green puffer, “My name’s Agony.” she said and lit her cigarette in the fire.
“Oh, of course, by all means, introduce yourself first.” said the bearded man dryly.
“Oh, just introduce yourself! You sorry bullshit factory!”demanded Agony.
“Fine!” the bearded man croaked. “I’m Thesis.” He made an exaggerated gesture of putting out his hand. Ruby did not shake it.
“I am Duenna.” Said the old Woman. “Very pleased to meet you.” She said with a little bow, then looked around the fire at her companions. Everyone rolled their eyes, everyone but the man in the blue suit, who just continued to stare blankly into the fire.
“I’m Motif.” The Man in the sunglasses said, “And here is Sequel.” he gestured to the man in the blue suit, who did not move.
“Oh my,” Said Ruby, “Well, I’ve got to say those are some awful funny names.”
“Their nicknames.” said Thesis gruffly.
“We don’t like to use our real names.” Explained Motif.
“Those names are attached to a world that no longer exists.” Duenna explained, shaking her head sadly.
