My fingers slowly moved up to the radio before me.
They ran across the top of it, grazing it as I tried to turn it on for most likely the 100th time.
A harsh gurgling growl outside drew my attention and instinct took over, responding to the call.
Food.
My legs shuffled along the floor and I made my way out of the door, slowly looking around.
Another one had just seen a squirrel and was clawing at the tree it ran up.
I heard shuffling down the street and slowly ambled my way to the edge of the lawn.
A horde of us had gathered, making a wall as they stumbled down along the cracking paved road.
Their harsh moans made me respond in turn and I eventually joined them, walking, walking, walking.
My feet kept moving forward even though I could barely feel them.
They felt odd and slow, my walk a strange shuffle.
I forgot how long I was with this group as we traveled.
Each other's noises kept us from separating.
We chased animals, barely catching any.
The animals were quicker and in a way smarter than humans, always managing to get away.
My teeth clacked against each other as I sniffed the air.
My near blind eyes, turning around in all directions, noting my companions also doing the same.
We were all getting a bit desperate.
We walked and walked and walked.
I had no sense of time.
Remembering things less and less.
I knew a radio, I think.
What even was a radio though?
I heard a thud from the back of the group and knew one had fallen, most likely not getting up as we continued our endless march.
I think I ended up somewhere in the middle of the herd as loud screeches, sounding inhuman came from the front.
Pressing forward, I let out a weak growl.
After a few moments I scented blood in the air, causing all of us to surge forward, knocking each other out of the way as we tried to get even just a bite.
By the time I had gotten to the front I had no clue what we had even attacked, it was just a mass of bones, muscle, and gristle.
Of course my entire body flung itself forward, falling onto one of the corpses and desperately trying to get some.
I was starving, I needed it or I would really die.
After several bites another one of us shoved me away, taking its turn.
I hissed, but it turned into a gurgle.
There wasn't much I could do as the rest of the herd pushed to take some as well.
I knew it wasn't fair to take it all but instinct made me greedy.
I didn't want to fall down.
My stomach felt a bit better but there was still a gnawing desire to eat eat eat.
The scent of blood in the air made me lose most of my reason as I stared up at the sky, seeing birds fly.
My hands reached up, trying to grab them even though it was impossible.
We walked again.
I didn't know how long we walked this time, but others fell...many others fell.
Loud barks drew our attention.
My head tilted over to look down an alleyway.
A trio of large dogs growled, baring their fangs at us but we immediately walked towards them, instead of fearing for our lives.
Why would we?
It didn't take long for the dogs to die, but their loud howls of agony bothered me a bit.
I was closer to the front this time so I got a bit more food.
But that didn't last long.
We walked and walked.
Rain began to pour down on us, sticking to my skin and weighing down my clothing, making it that much more difficult to move.
My hair was in my milky grey eyes, signs of my affliction.
It was hard to see and I groaned, my hands trying to move my bangs but weren't capable of it.
My leg stumbled over something, making me fall into a large puddle.
I turned my head to the side, watching as the feet of the herd walked past me.
I knew I needed to get up or I would be left behind.
I slowly dragged myself forward, my hands sloshing through the puddle as my knee bent, making me lift my body up.
We walked.
But I was a little farther behind than I normally was.
I could tell from the herd, I was now the oldest one here.
Most of the original ones had long since fallen and not gotten up.
But surprisingly I had not done the same yet.
I could tell by the scent.
Newer.
Newly turned.
This one had turned just a bit ago.
How long had it been for me?
No idea.
I was just old.
Weak and failing.
Starving.
My body had gotten very thin, I could tell when we passed rusting cars and saw my reflection.
Brown tangled nasty hair, grey milky eyes, and sunken cheeks.
My teeth nashed in frustration as I stumbled over something in the road, nearly falling onto another one of us.
They let out a harsh groan.
I landed somewhere near a cracking curb.
My face was in front of a dandelion, turning white as it was beginning to spread its seeds.
Up.
I dragged myself an inch forward, letting out a wheeze.
Up.
My cracked fingernails scraped at the ground.
Up.
I needed to get up, the herd was still moving.
I could see their feet passing me.
Up now.
Somehow I managed to pull myself up onto unsteady legs.
I moved back towards the herd, now dead last.
I knew this was bad, I wouldn't be able to get much if any food at all that would be caught.
If.
If we found anything to be caught.
I let out a harsh hiss.
But I kept moving, somehow.
I once helped lead the pack, taking down prey for us to consume but time had taken its toll.
How much time I did not know.
But I could tell it had been a lot.
My limbs were tense, getting harder and harder to move each day.
I wondered if I would die.
Actually die.
I wanted to think I was scared but I felt surprisingly empty.
Only instinct that told me to get back up each time made me move.
However that ran out a long time ago, I was sure.
Seeing as the rest of the original had fallen long before me.
Something else kept me moving.
I let out a gurgle noticing the herd had gotten even farther from me.
I moved at a near snails pace, occasionally shuffling a foot forward.
It was getting harder and harder to control my legs and my head slowly moved to look down at them.
I was completely confused, forgetting why they wouldn't move.
The shifting of weight had me toppling forward, landing in dirt.
The sun beat down on me, burning my skin slightly as I laid, hearing the herd leave me behind.
I was starving.
I let out a low moan, the sound gurgling in my throat.
I knew I could once talk and move as if it was nothing.
How to say words was beyond me anymore though.
I knew it involved my mouth and throat but sticky liquid often coated the inside of both, making any noise I tried to make gargled.
Up.
I really did not think I could honestly.
Up.
There wasn't food around, it would most likely do me better to not move and hope food would arrive.
Up.
………….
I don't know how long it took me to get my body back up, but the herd had long gone.
I was alone.
Being alone would basically make it impossible to get a meal.
I was standing in the middle of the street, trying to figure out what to do next.
I had no plan, or idea of how to find food.
I needed to be with a group or I would definitely fall back down and not get up.
The sky darkened as I debated on what to do, my mind muddled and lost.
Forgetting anything I really tried to think about.
Tilting my head back, I look up at the sky.
Bright full balls of light above me.
But I was empty and broken.
The stars were too beautiful for me to comprehend down here.
A droplet fell on my face, causing me to blink.
More slowly came down and eventually turned into a downpour.
I let out a grunt.
Yay.
