Martin links arms with me and James as we walk down the street, Jonny and Zack walking hand-in-hand right behind us. I am thankful for the support, because Jonny insisted that I wear heels tonight, claiming that I would ruin the glorious outfit he put together if I didn’t wear the strappy five inch gold heels he bought for me. I usually stick to flats at work and sandals at home, so this is a very new experience.
As a Beta, I never know what side of myself to accentuate. I am bigger than most Omegas, but much smaller than Alphas. Sure, wearing heels makes me taller, but not nearly tall enough to look like an Alpha. Even though my friends don’t mind my height difference, we must look like quite the odd bunch walking down the street with three giants, a shorty, and someone who could be classified as neither. I wish I were a little shorter or taller. Anything to fit in just a bit more.
Martin squeezes my arm and I push the negative thought out of my head. We are going out to celebrate and have fun. I don’t want to let my insecurities get in the way. I am a motherfucking doctor, which most people cannot say. I have a good job, I even got a promotion. All my friends said I look good and I feel good. That’s all that really matters. Screw what anyone else says. I return Martin’s squeeze and smile.

We arrive at the club, and for a moment I am fearful that I will not be able to get in. Recently, more and more businesses were opening up to Beta’s, but looking at the line to get into the club, there were only Alphas and Omegas. Jonny must’ve sensed my nerves, because suddenly he gives me a hug from behind. I place my hands over his and squeeze to show my appreciation. His hugs always calm me down.
We all chat about a recent movie we watched as the line moves up, bringing us closer and closer to the entrance and further and further from my comfort zone. When we get to the front of the line, we all shuffle so that I am at the front of our group. I think it’s because they secretly worry that I won’t get in.
“Can I see your I.D. please?” The bouncer asks. She is a huge Alpha, at least six feet tall and built like she could easily break me in half. If she couldn’t already tell that I was a Beta, she surely would when she sees it on my driver’s license.
“Sure,” I smile, trying to stay confident while handing her my card.
She looks at it and then grabs my hand. “Have a fantastic night, Dr. Paige,” she winks as she stamps my hand with the club’s logo.
I let out a breath I did not realize I was holding as I thank her and moved into the club to await for my friends. I am really doing this.
~~~~~~
“Do I really have to do this?” I moan.
“Yes!” Jonny nods vigorously. “We didn’t come to a club for you to sit in a booth all night. We came to drink and to dance! James, get the lovely doctor another drink so we can paarrrrrrrty!”
“Yes sir!” James salutes as he heads towards the bar.
We had been in the club for about thirty minutes and Jonny was already pretty buzzed. He desperately wants to go dancing, but I am still waaaay too sober for that.
James returns with some shots and a tall red drink.
“Drink up!” Everyone takes a shot and downs it and James hands me another. “Come on doc, you have to catch up.”
I laugh, but take his offering. I don’t like being around this many people, but being drunk would definitely help.
“This is for you too,” he smiles, handing me the red drink.
“What is it?”
“Try it”
I take a sip and smile.
“Like it?”
“Yeah, it tastes like candies!”
“That’s ‘cause it’s a Swedish Fish. I know how much you like those, so I figured you’d like the drink.”
“Thanks James, with all this alcohol, I think I’m just about ready to dance.”
Jonny must have heard me say dance, because we are all quickly pulled to the dance floor. I was worried about not knowing how to dance, but looking around, I feel more comfortable with my dance skills, as no one was actually dancing, just moving to the beat.
Though I prefer to stay home and read or watch movies, this is nice. I am moving to the beat. The music is good. I take a sip out of the drink that James brought me. The drinks are good. I see everyone smiling as they dance. My friends are good. I don’t think I would mind coming here again in the future. Maybe not all the time, but special occasions like this one would be nice.
As the night goes on, I go through two more drinks while dancing my legs off.
“Hey, I am going to run to the bathroom, do y’all need anything?” I ask.
Zach looks at Jonny and they both shake their heads no, as does Martin.
“I don’t need anything, but do you want me to go with you?” James asks.
“Nah,” I touch his arm, “I’m good.”
I spin around and make my way to the bathroom.
Everything was fine as I make my way back to the dance floor until I realized that I was being followed.
Spinning around to face the people following me, I ask “Can I help you?”
I see three towering Alphas, with a playful mischief in their eyes.
“Yes, pretty thing, you can definitely help us out,” the tallest of the three drawls. “We saw you on the dance floor and placed a little wager.”
My eyebrow quarks up.
“You see,” the shortest of the three speaks up with a sly smile. “This doof here,” he says hitting the middle Alpha, “thinks that you are a short Alpha, while I,” he points to himself and shimmying to make himself seem bigger, “insist that you are a tall Omega.”
“So which one are you?” The middle one asks with a wink.
“My second gender is none of your business,” I mumble, turning to go back to my friends.
“Now wait just a minute,” the big one grabs my arm. He is still smiling, but it seems more like a smirk. “We have a bet going. Is a pretty thing like you really not going to help us settle a bet?”
“I’d really like you to let go now,” I tense up.
All of the playfulness left the eyes of the Alphas. “Then, tell us your second gender.” While it is not illegal to use an Alpha command, it is highly frowned upon. I guess that is a rough thing to understand for a drunk, entitled Alpha.
“I am a Beta,” I squeak in response to his command.
“Disgusting,” He scoffs. “How could they let some lowly Beta in here?”
“I-I” I gulp, “am a paying customer, just like you. Now. Please let me go.”
Realizing that he was still holding my arm, the Alpha quickly released it with a jolt that pushed me back. “I can’t believe I was touching trash. Beta’s like you should be no were near Alphas of our caliber.”
“Yeah, you shouldn’t even be let into this place, except for maybe as a cleaner,” the smallest hums.
“That’s all Betas are good for anyway,” The middle one nods. “That and cleaning the shit off my shoes when I get home from work.”
Having been released, I turn to walk back to my friends, refusing to cry in front of these assholes.
“This stupid Beta would be lucky to clean the filth off my shoe,” the large one scoffs. “Maybe if she begs for it.”
I should have seen it coming, but suddenly I am on the floor with a shoe on my back. It brings back memories from when I was in high school. But I am not the weak person I was back then.
He is pushing down on my back pretty hard, but with a bit of luck, I am able to grab his foot. I maneuver myself so I am no longer under him and he stumbles and falls back. I am quick to get on my feet and run from them. In doing so, I feel like I run straight into a wall.
“What’s going on here?”
I am shaking and fear that I might fall over, but strong arms wrap around me, causing me to squeak.
“You bitch!” I hear the Alpha I knocked off me call.
“Excuse me sir, but what the fuck?” The voice of the person holding me rings out.
“She’s just a stupid Beta, I don’t know how the fuck she got in here, she must have sneaked in or something. But you should kick her out right away,” he huffs.
“I know how she got in,” the voice laughs. “I let her in. And I am certainly not kicking her out.”
“And why would you even let her in?” The short Alpha laughs.
“Because I don’t discriminate?” She made it seem so obvious.
“Maybe you should,” the middle Alpha chimes in. “Scum like her lowers the value of your club.”
“Really? Because the only scum I see are three Alphas who don’t know their heads from their asses. Ali," She calls, "can you be a doll and kick these pieces of shit out of my club?”
“Sure love, I got it!”
After the others were gone, she focused on me. “Hey, I am sorry that I didn’t see what was happening earlier.” She was petting my head as she held me to her chest. I guess it is in Alpha nature to gentle someone who is distressed.
“Thank you,” I whisper.
She pulls me to arms length. “I really wish you didn’t have to thank me.”
I smile at the bouncer who had let me into the club. I guess she is more than just a bouncer. “It happens sometimes.”
“It shouldn’t though. Betas have just as much value as Alphas or Omegas. I mean, take you for example. You fucking did something that no Alpha or Omega every thought of.”
“I- you know me?”
“Yep, I recognized your name when I let you in. Because of you, my Omega sister can go to school without fear of suddenly falling into heat and my Beta brother has been inspired to become a doctor.”
“I am glad to have made such an impact.”
She hugs me once more, and I feel safe.
“Jane?” A very panicked James calls.
“I’ll hand you off to your Alpha. Stay safe Dr. Paige. If you ever need anything, please hit me up.” I get another quick squeeze before she lets go and James takes her place.
“What’s going on?” He practically growls.
“It’s a long story,” I sigh. “I just want to go home.”
“Okay,” he says, tucking me under his arm. “Let’s get out of here.”
As we leave, I give the owner one last small wave and smile.
