General Howard crept into the dark room which had the shades drawn quietly, trying not to disturb the other inhabitants who were sleeping. The general reached down and lightly grabbed John by the shoulder, giving him a slight shake to wake him up. John turned his head, he hadn't really slept much that night, but he had just dozed off for a few moments.
The events of the previous day had exhausted John. He had spent much of his time, going well into the night, discussing top secret details with select members of congress. The senate and house intelligence committees were informed of what was going on to the extent that he knew. However he had not broached the subject of the Code Blue soldiers yet. He wasn't ready for the inevitable anger that would arise from them having been kept in the dark for so long about a military program.
This whole situation had to be kept silent, for they knew it would send the public into complete and utter panic. Many people were already quite on edge after being told the story of the previous day. John had decided to let the story made up by his captors to the American public stand. He hated the idea of lying to the American public, but he already had done that so why complicate things more? Leave things be for now, they could always be cleaned up later, if there was a later that is.
John quietly got up and followed general Howard who was heading toward a private room. As he exited the room he had been sleeping in he took a glance backward. As sad as things had been yesterday, at least something good had come out of it. John was able to be with all the people he cared about, not just a phone call but physically be in their presence.
He noticed his parents gray hair, which had been slightly lit up as the door hung open. It was a reminder that they all had precious little time on earth. Sure medical advances had continued for some time in fits. Yet even with the best of modern day care a person might expect to live to be say 140. Eventually nature always wins.
Both John's parents were well under 6 feet tall, and both had a slender build from the daily workout routines they stuck to. Having them around gave John some motivation to pick up his work outs, as he had started to add some weight from the stress of the Presidency. He resolved that as soon as this thing was over, if it were to end anyways, he would get more exercise.
After walking down the hallway the two men found their destination and went into a room, locking the door. John noticed just before entering that there was an impressive security force surrounding them.
"General, are those Code Blue soldiers out there?"
"Yes sir, they are, we kept about 100 for your security detail. We don't think the enemy will return, but if they do you will at least have some protection."
"Alright general, what is it that you wanted to see me about?"
"I am sorry I had to disturb your sleep sir, but the Code Blue soldiers have split off now into groups. Most of the men have headed to Russia as backup for the first group you sent. It now appears the vast majority of the terrorists have gone to Russia."
"And the other group?"
"They are heading up North, toward Canada. It appears that the smaller group of terrorists has identified a target."
"What is the target?"
"Not what sir, who. I have uploaded some video that we were able to piece back together, take a look."
"John looked down at his watch screen. He brought it closer to his face to better make out the detail. The video was pretty low quality, especially for modern technology, but he could see clearly enough."
"Those two look like... well they look like the terrorists. Who are they?"
"Well we don't know sir, but they appear to be on our side."
John watched as the video progressed.
"Wow, they are good fighters, they seem to be even better than the others. Oh wait a minute, now who is that?" John asked pointing to his screen.
"Well sir that man we do know something about. That is Clayton Johnson, he is an NSA field agent. It appears the lady saved his life."
"OK thank you general. Why would they be chasing these people? What makes them so important?"
"We don't know sir, perhaps they view those 3 as a threat? I am just guessing though sir. Oh and wait, there is more. We pulled up this video too."
John again looked down at his watch screen.
"Oh you have to be kidding me right?"
"No sir, unfortunately not."
"So this group is travelling with two incredible soldiers, 1 NSA agent and an old man and what looks like a 10 year old girl?"
"Yes sir."
"How are they supposed to fight back with an assembled group like that?"
"We don't know sir, but we do know the terrorists are heading toward their last known location at a rapid pace. I think the only thing we can do now is pray for them that our men arrive in time."
"Are you sure Code Blue can handle this?"
"Absolutely sir.
"Alright general I trust your judgement. I am just praying for everyone that they can handle this. Is there anything else?"
"Yes sir, wave 1 of Code Blue is about to deploy in Russia. They think they have the location of the terrorists there."
"Excellent general. I hope all goes well."
"Me too sir."
The general left the room, heading out to be briefed more on the situation on the ground and to tend to other things that had cropped up. The Pentagon had become the new headquarters for John and thus changes needed to be made. Currently a group was working on rapidly turning a room into a war situation room, where the John could view his Code Blue soldiers in real time.
John of course was not too interested in what they were doing right now, but he certainly did want to watch when they assaulted the terrorists. If they were able to kill all of the terrorists that would be fine by him, revenge for all of the men and women they had killed in his security detail. It still made his blood boil to think about it.
John exited the room he was in, wanting desperately to get back to his family. As he got out he looked at one of the Code Blue soldiers standing at the door with his hand in a salute to the President.
"At ease soldier. How old are you son?"
"I am 18 sir."
"Thank you for your service son. We need people like you now more than we have ever before. I truly appreciate you and the rest of those boys." John said, waving his hand at the other soldiers.
"Thank you sir."
John walked back to the room his family was in. Along the way he looked out the window. It was raining, how fitting for the kind of day they were in for, he thought to himself. When John got back into the room he found his daughter and son awake. He signaled to them to come with him. Silently they all left the room.
John looked down at Erik and signed (while speaking the words at the same time for Claudia to hear) we should all go for a walk. The children looked at him and nodded their heads in agreement. He took both of his children by the hands, one on his left the other on his right, down the hallway for a walk. He wanted them close by, it helped him to ease the stress of the unknown that was about to unfold.
