Greetings. Today’s tale will be a bit different. By that, I mean that today’s tale is not a tale at all, but rather an analysis. This is because there are no tales of King Rottingwell. King Rottingwell is merely a part of the Monstrum mythos, though he is one of the less important parts of the mythos. Don’t worry. We will be looking at several aspects of the Monstrum mythos in the near future. So please, keep on the lookout. Now, let us dive into the analysis of King Rottingwell.
As far as origins, little to nothing is known about him. There are no indications of his upbringing other than accounts of things he has said himself in the mythos. Before he was a king, he was merely a commoner named Francis DeLuke Rottingwell. He was from a poor family, and he was somewhat of a loner as other children did not like to be around him because he was “always a bit poorer” and “had an odd odor”.
Rottingwell always had one desire, and that was to be king of his own domain. However, there was one problem. Rottingwell did not have any royal connections and was overall “below the lowest of peasants”. That is as far as Rottingwell’s origins go, or at least that is all the organization knows at this point.
Now, let’s move forward to how he became King Rottingwell. During his adult life, Rottingwell decided that he would take his pursuit for prosperity to the next level. If he could not receive his own kingdom, he would have to build one himself. Thus, Rottingwell moved to Outkast, which was a practically uninhabitable swamp located on the east side of the Land of the Giants. The only people who lived here were swamp creatures, peasants, deserters, and criminals on the run. If there was a place where no one would come looking for you, Outkast was the place.
Rottingwell eventually built himself a makeshift castle and declared himself king of Outkast, changing its name to Rottingwell, after himself. Since Outkast was basically a dump, no one really cared or spoke against home. They probably thought he was just another loon abandoned by society. Rottingwell and the inhabitants of it would soon learn of a horrible truth the hard way.
After Eizeldaine’s (the god of death) corruption against his brother, Ordalaine (the god of life), the world of Monstrum began to fall into eternal darkness, death, and corruption. The kingdom of Rottingwell would face it the worst. Outkast would fall under a plague, killing what wasn’t already dead there. All of the inhabitants of Outkast would soon die, bodies rotting and corroding. However, King Rottingwell did not fall under this plague.
Rottingwell watched before his very eyes as his kingdom and citizens perished slowly, one after the other. King Rottingwell could not handle this tragedy, going insane. Mythos speculates that he cut a permanent smile into his face and removed his eyelids. His hair turned white, and he lost his ability to walk.
It is rumored that Rottingwell is still there, living in his kingdom of corpses and rot. Rottingwell is probably completely in denial of what has transpired. Maybe the organization will find out the truth one day. We aren’t entirely sure.
There is a lesson to learn from King Rottingwell. Passion can be a dangerous thing. For King Rottingwell’s case, it caused him to lose everything. Some think that things probably would’ve been fine if the corruption of Monstrum never took place. I personally disagree. King Rottingwell seemed to be emotionally and mentally unstable. I feel that things probably would’ve gone bad either way.
Anyway, that’s all for King Rottingwell. Perhaps we will find out more information in the future. Regardless, that’s all for now. I’ll see you next time with another tale or analysis on some other creature. Until then, take care of yourselves and I’ll see you next time.
