When Saturday arrived I was sitting in my room waiting for Elliot so we can spend the day visiting my dad as we planned for the day. I looked over the notebook that I used to write in, under doctor Brown instructions, but it’s been a few months now since I’ve written an entry and I wondered if I should continue it. It wasn’t necessary for me to continue, but it honestly helped me over him and I remember the nights I’d spend writing when I couldn’t sleep. I brushed my fingers over the pages when I heard my phone ring and I set the book to the side.
“Hey,” I answered after seeing Elliot’s name on the caller ID.
"I'm here." He tells me. "I had to park inside the driveway. There was nowhere else for me to park at."
"That's fine. I'll go right now," I said hanging up and put my notebook on the side.
I head out of the house after waving at my mom, she was busy watching her afternoon show, and I made sure that I locked the door. Elliot looked well dressed today in a black and white striped shirt and blue jeans; he even wore black shades that makes him look a little older. I smiled, sitting back, and reached for his hand as he starts driving.
“I don’t get why I’m always nervous when visiting Dad,” I said as I looked out the window after we’ve been driving for about twenty minutes now. “I’ve been going as regularly as I could before I turned eighteen and even after my dad’s marriage.”
“Is it because of your past?” Elliot asked. “I’m sure it’s still not easy after all that you dealt with.”
“I’m not even sure sometimes. I tried not to spend time with my dad during my senior year than to find out that he’s finally proposed to Lily and that she was pregnant by the time I graduated….” I said, turning to him. “I’m happy that they had a baby together, but I didn’t expect it either.”
“I’m happy for them. Lily has always been so kind, and your dad always seemed happy when he’s with her.” Elliot replied.
I looked out the window, sighing. “Dad looked happy at the wedding…” I mumbled.
“They both did. I guess it was good that we had our prom suits. It still fits for your prom, and we were able to wear them for the wedding.” He said as he glanced over at me. “I guess it was useful in having to buy them.”
I smiled, “I got to see you wear it more than once.”
“I don’t think I can wear it now. The jacket was already getting tight around the shoulders, and I’ve gotten a little taller as well, but it was good that we wore it more than once.”
“So, when will I see you wear a suit again?” I asked.
Elliot laughed, “Maybe until graduation. I don’t think suits are for me.”
“What? You're handsome wearing a suit.” I mumbled, feeling my cheeks blush.
Elliot grinned, “Am I?”
I looked out the window, “Yes.”
“Should we go somewhere that we can wear a suit then?” He asks me.
I’m sure my face is red now. “Don’t tease me.”
Elliot chuckled, “I’m serious. If you like it, then I’ll wear it for you.”
I rest my head against the window. “Fine… You promise?”
“Look at me, and I’ll promise.” He tells me.
I pressed my lips together, feeling shy, and turned to him.
“I promise I’ll wear a suit just for you and only for you.” He tells me, staring at me with an expression that showed that he meant every word.
I stared back at him and reached for his hand feeling his fingers brushing along the palm of my hand. “Alright,” I answered.
He raised an eyebrow, “I said all that, and I only got an ‘alright’?”
I broke into a smile and looked down, “You embarrassed me. Now, shut up and keep driving.”
“Wow, you're embarrassed and sassy. I don’t think I’ll be wearing a suit anytime soon with that response.” He said, turning to face the road again.
I bit the bottom of my lips then raised our hands to kiss his knuckles, “Fine. I’m sorry. Please, wear it soon.”
I can see his face turning red now, “See why can’t you respond like that to me instead.”
“Because it feels embarrassing, right?”
Elliot parked the car, and I just realized that we arrived at my Dad’s house. “It’s not embarrassing to me. It’s flattering,” he said, letting go of my hand to cup my face so he can pull me to a kiss.
I kissed him back as I raised my hand to brush them along his sides, feeling his soft skin. “Is it?”
He nodded his head, “Don’t you think of that instead of feeling embarrassed?”
I thought about it before looking back at him, “Yeah.”
He smiled, “Come on; let’s go spend time with your family.”
I unbuckled myself and followed him to the front door, still holding his hand, wanting to stay close to him. Lily welcomed us inside, and we were quiet for a while because Ally was asleep, so we prepared for dinner while we had the time. Dad was grilling outside when we arrived, and Elliot went over to help him out like he always does. I was cleaning the table when I heard a cry from the living room and went above to see Ally laying on the small bassinet they had for her. I reached over to pick her up and cradle her as she slowly started waking up.
“Shh,” I said as I held her, and she already felt so big compared to the last time I held her. “It’s okay.”
I bounced her gently in my arm until she fell back to sleep and moved to sit on the couch, looking down at her. Ally looked more like Lily, a bit of a darker shade compared to me, her hair is darker while I had the curly light brown, but we had the same nose. Reaching my hand up, I brushed her little cheeks, and I honestly never held a baby before until the day she was born. I never thought much about having a sibling because my parents divorced, and it seemed like Dad wasn’t interested either while dating Lily until they announced during their wedding reception. Now that she’s here, I never felt the need to protect someone as small as her before, and I just hope that I can be a good brother to her.
“Michael,” Elliot called from the entrance of the living room.
I looked up, a little startled, and called him over to sit beside me. “Ally went back to sleep,” I whispered.
“I was wondering where you went.” He mumbled as he sits beside me, watching.
“I heard her crying, and when I picked her, she fell back to sleep,” I whispered.
“Do you want to be alone?” he asked.
I shook my head, “Stay with me.”
“Lily said your dad would have the food ready in five minutes,” he tells me.
I nod my head as I continue to look down at Ally before turning back to him. “She’s cute, isn’t she?”
“Yeah… Looks a little like you.”
“I don’t see it,” I said, confused.
“She does. I’ve seen your baby pictures.”
I turned to him, my brows pulled together as I thought about him seeing the photos. “When?”
“Your mom showed it to me last year during New Year,” he answered, smiling.
“Where was I?”
“Hm, I think you weren’t home yet. You were here for a few days, and Lily dropped you off on New Years’ eve.”
I opened my mouth and wanted to say something, but I just shook my head instead. “And you said you were waiting for me.”
He smiled, “You were so cute.”
I still shook my head at him, “I’m gonna need your mom to show me your baby pictures.”
“When do you see my mom?” He asks, sarcastically.
“I ran into her at the market last week. I still live in the same city, unlike you who is hardly ever home, so we are bound to run into each other at some point.” I retort. “Also, she invited me to dinner.”
“When?”
“Monday when I have my last class at four,” I answered, smiling now.
“I’m not going to be home Monday.”
“Jason is,” I respond.
Elliot sighed heavily, “Alright. You beat me. I can’t even be around to eat my own mom’s cooking…”
“I can. Your mom’s cooking is so good. Like, have you had her baked potatoes?” I asked.
“Yes.” He said, looking at me, looking upset now. “She never asked me to come home early to eat her baked potatoes.”
I chuckled, “I’m going to have to save you some next time.”
“How about waiting until I come home so we can have a family dinner with you?” He asked.
“Fine,” I answered.
