“Thank you for coming to Frosty Bites, come again soon.” I said while a little kid and his mom exited the shop. It’s always the kids.
The shops’ been quieter, not many people are coming. Probably because it’s cold. I was slightly chewing one of the mini plastic spoons before I heard a voice behind me.
“You know August, you could be a tiny bit more enthusiastic when talking to customers.”
I turned around to see that it was my boss. “Ah… I mean, I’ve tried..?”
“Lemme guess, it’s just ‘not in your bones’, huh?”
I smiled, “Exactly.”
He chuckled before walking a bit towards me. “You think you could close up today? My hands are kind of full.”
Well, I don’t see any problem, so I nodded. “Yeah, sure. I have nothing to do at home anyway.”
“Right, thanks so much. You’re a lifesaver. As treatment, you can steal some of the ice-cream in storage.”
His offer caught me off guard and I couldn’t help but laugh, “Anytime, I’ll take you up on that offer.”
He chuckled again before saying goodbye and leaving to go somewhere else.
Mr. Hilms is a really nice guy, nicer than a lot of male bosses I’ve seen. He’s pretty laid back and has a good sense of humor. I’d probably have nothing to do with my life if he hadn’t given me this job.
I went to go and ‘steal’ one of the smaller tubs of ice-cream and used the same spoon I’ve been chewing on for the past 15 minutes. It wasn’t anything too special, just the normal mint ice-cream flavour.
Though I practically just stared at the clock until it was closing time, so for about half an hour. When the clock hit 5, I went to change out of my uniform and got my stuff.
Once I was finished, I redid my hair and picked up my bag. Then I locked up, and left.
. . .
I was sitting on my couch, watching a random movie while being wrapped inside a blanket. It’s cold.
What was annoying me was that I had to continuously blow my hair out of my face because I couldn't see and it kept stabbing my eye. I gave up after five minutes and tied my hair into a bun instead of just leaving it loose.
I feel tired, I think I’m falling asleep.
Just as I was about to doze off, I got a message on my phone. What great timing, the world is against me.
Ah, it’s from Katelyn. It’s been a while since I’ve talked to them. I wonder how her and Damien are doing.
‘Hey August. Been a while since we talked so I wanted to check up on you, how have you been doing?
‘I’ve been doing okay. What about you and Damien?’
‘We’ve been doing just fine! Work is getting a bit much but we’re both coping.’
‘That’s good, I was thinking that I should visit soon since it’s been a long time since I last did.’
‘Yes, definitely! It’s been way too long, let us know when you’re coming then. We’re going to be looking forward to it.’
“Right, I will then. I have to go, hope you have a good night.’
‘You too, good night.’
It surely has been some time since they’ve last checked in on me, almost forgot to message. But, it’s nice I suppose, that there’s some people in this world that I can consider family.
Damien and Katelyn mean a lot to me, they took me in when my parents passed away, and I’ll forever be grateful for them. There was no close family who were able to take care of us. But then they both did, they’re truly amazing people.
I put my phone back down and continued to watch whatever the hell I was watching. There’s seriously nothing good to watch on TV these days, I should probably find some shitty series to keep myself invested on, or something like that.
Suddenly, I got this agonising headache. It hurts like hell. I’ve been looking at screens too long. Yeah, the world is definitely against me right now, well, always.
I should sleep. I need some sleep. I’m tired.
Yeah, I think I’m going to go to sleep.
