"What if when we go to school, I lose control and attack everyone? I know I'm a vampire and I need blood to survive but I don't want to be a killer."
His hand was stretching out and it looked like he almost touched the stars. I reached out and grabbed his hand. I moved his hand so that it was over my heart so he could feel the truth in my words.
"Bram, you will never be a killer. I have known you since we were both six and you have not even gotten close to killing me. Believe me; I think you are one of the nicest bloodsuckers in the world. The rest of them can continue to suck as much as they like because they are not like you."
"I suck too! There is no other way to get blood."
"You suck blood, and they suck at everything else."
People think that just because he is a vampire that he has no soul, but I know that he is not a mindless, soulless killing creature. If he was truly soulless, I would be dead at a young age and most of the village would be drained of life and blood. He turned to look at me with his dark emerald eyes. I could see the dark red shadows in the deep green, but I could also see a small sparkle of light from my comment in them. I felt something lift in my heart as I saw his smile. The fangs used to scare me but after many years, they became fully part of him as he grew into them.
"Thank you for believing in me."
"I will always believe in you as long as you believe in me."
He squeezed my hand, then he let go to grab a blood bag. We both moved our chairs closer and then we started pointing out all the different constellations in the night sky. It was relaxing with the perfect not too cold, not too hot wind as we looked up at our sky of hopes and dreams.
"That's Herne the Great Hunter. The story goes that if you see him over your house on a full moon, your house would be protected from danger for a full year."
"Damn, it is only a half-moon," I told him as I found the moon, "guess that we're just not that lucky."
We slowly drank our drinks as the moon moved across the twinkling night sky. It was so peaceful, but something in the back of my head kept on telling me that this is the calm before the storm.
"It was a great idea to have a sleepover the night before we leave," He said to me as two shooting stars crossed the path.
"Hey Bram, doesn't that mean that two soulmates found each other?"
"Wow, they must be so lucky! I hope whoever they are, that they have a happy life."
I looked over to the door when I heard someone knocking from inside the house, then my mom came out with trays of snacks and drinks. I could see that she brought out our favorite cups. Joy's cup had apples all over a green cup, Bram's was red with tiny bats shapes and mine was purple with little paw prints on it. She also brought out the matching plates that were full of food.
"I brought hot pancakes and chocolate to help warm everyone up!" She said and then she looked around, "did Joy already leave?"
"Yeah, she said that she didn't fully pack yet," I told her as she gave us the trays. "So she wanted to finish it up before the morning to not miss anything."
"Then the next time I see her, I need to give her a large mug of my hot chocolate and a plate of pancakes."
"Thank you Mrs. Snowpelt! You always make the best pancakes and chocolate in the village! I could eat my weight in them!"
"Aw! You are such a sweetheart, Bram." She ruffled up his hair as she spoke.
She walked back inside with the extra tray. Bram started on the pancakes and I saw that he nearly inhaled all of them.
"Dude! Chew before you choke on them!" Luckily, he slowed down after I told him. "You do realize that it would be a great insult to die from choking on my mom's food."
He looked up at me with shock as I took a sip of my hot chocolate. It was so warm and perfect to drink on a cold night like this. The way it smoothly warms up my body as it slides down my throat and into my stomach is such an amazing feeling.
"What the hell? That amount of sugar could kill you! What is in that monster drink?!"
"She put in whipped cream, marshmallows, peppermint bark, maple syrup, extra dark chocolate chips, and six cubes of sugar," I told him then took another sip, "and this is when she makes a small cup for me."
The cup itself looks like a tower of complete mess that was threatening to tip over. My cup was also bigger than his own mug. If I had to guess, I think that I can handle the sugar level because it charges up my magical ability.
"How come you don't have diabetes or high blood sugar?" I just shrugged at that, "how come I don't have diabetes or high blood sugar from drinking your blood?!"
He started to wave his hands around like a panicked man while still sitting in the chair. I could not stop laughing at him, so I joined on the pretend to freak out.
"Can you even get those?"
"I don't know! Maybe there is a special vampire version of them?" he stayed silent for a few moments while gazing at my cup, "can I try a sip?"
I handed it over to him then I started on the pancakes as he took a sip. He started coughing from the sugar overload. I guess he is not used to the sugar content in it.
"Holy crap! That's sugary!"
"I know! That's how I like it though I wish it was a bigger cup then I could add more!"
"Any bigger and it would count as a bowl!"
I grabbed it from him and then chugged it down. I looked over to him and I started to laugh because he had a big chocolate mustache. He started to laugh as well then I realized that I had one too. We quickly grabbed some napkins to clean up our faces. I always wondered why he never let me try his drinks but I had a feeling for the reason why.
"Does chocolate really taste good with blood?"
"To someone like me, yes it does. It tastes like cherry syrup on top of chocolate candy."
He opened his mouth to say something else, but then I yawned which made him yawn. Then he leaned closer to me and closed his eyes.
"Bram, I don't think I would be able to go to this high school if you didn't go with me."
I do not know if it was the sugar making me do it or what, but I wanted to tell him the truth.
The next thing I know, I put my head on his shoulder, and then I think we both fell asleep. My last thought of the night was to wish that this peace would never end for us. That is all that it will ever be, a dream. Lying next to him, I think that this is the best sleep I ever had in years.
