In the morning, Tom & Alice get washed and changed. Alice notices the red marks on Tom's body and asks him what they were. Tom looked at them in the mirror and said he thought they were likely caused by bed bugs. Alice began to notice some red marks on her arms and stomach as well. They both then leave the flat, as Tom drives Alice to the local doctor for a check-up.
The doctor examines Alice, informing her warmly, "You and the baby are fine".
The doctor notices the red marks on her, which Alice asks him about. The doctor naturally thought it might be a mild rash and Alice should keep an eye on it. And if it gets any worse to come back and get it checked out.
Alice next asks the doctor to take a quick look at Tom. Who carefully lifts his shirt revealing the red marks on his chest. The doctor looked concerned and carefully examined them.
He said. "They look like bite marks."
Tom then mentions the flat might have some rats.
To which the doctor replied bluntly "You better get the flat cleaned up quickly, especially with Alice being pregnant."
After leaving the doctor's surgery, Tom decides to show Alice around the university town, while shopping for some baby outfits as well. On their way back home, they stop off at the local fumigators, to schedule an appointment to get the flat checked out later in the afternoon.
After pulling up outside the flat, Tom gets out of the van and sees a car similar to Britney's parked further down the road. Tom briskly walks toward it to get a proper look, as Alice follows him.
He subsequently tells Alice "This is Britney's car!"
Alice queries Tom, "Are you sure?"
And he replies, "Yes."
With Tom pointing to some stickers, Britney had placed on her windscreen. He also recognized her license plate. Tom immediately pulls out his mobile phone and calls Sarah, letting her know he's found Britney's car not far from his flat.
As Sarah tells him "I just heard back from Britney's parents, who haven't heard from her either."
Sarah subsequently decides to contact the police and would keep Tom informed. Tom & Alice then walk back to the flat. A few hours later, the fumigator arrives. And after extensive checks, the fumigator finds no infestations of any kind. And that whatever their problem was, it wasn't caused by rats. Which left Tom & Alice puzzled, as they struggle to think of what else it might be.
As the fumigator leaves, Tom spots a police car outside as a pair of officers approach him. Who wanted to ask him a few questions, about a young woman who was recently reported missing. Tom provides the officers with a full statement, as Britney's car is taken away. The police inform Tom they may want to question him further. And they would be obtaining a statement from James as well as they leave the flat.
Alice continues struggling to breathe, especially when she goes into Tom's bedroom. And she finds it impossible to lay on the bed. So Tom & Alice decide to sleep downstairs. During the early hours, Tom begins sweating profusely, as he calls out for 'Lucy'. Alice wakes up and tries rousing him, but is unable to do so. She then hears light footsteps scurrying about upstairs. Alice gets up from the sofa bed and tries flicking on the lights, which buzz on and off as the light bulbs fizzle out.
Alice finds a torch in the kitchen and goes upstairs. She hesitantly follows the ominous sound of the footsteps toward Tom's bedroom. While hearing faint scratching noises on the inside of the door. Gathering a deep breath, she carefully opens it and walks inside. She surveys the room with the flashlight, but sees nothing unusual. Alice then closes the door quietly behind her and heads back towards the staircase.
Walking down the hall as it creaked under her footsteps, Alice notices a few pictures had been moved, with one of them lying on the floor. As she carefully puts the picture back on the wall, scurrying footsteps suddenly approach her from behind.
Before she can turn around, Alice is repeatedly knocked over, being thrown about by some invisible force. Before being hurled down the stairs, leaving her knocked out cold at the bottom of them, as Tom remains asleep.
