Damon and Ben followed me to the storage room. I rubbed my hands together and grinned. Nothing like playing dress up with a lumberjack and government officer. I could really have some fun.
I strode to the reject pile and dug through some of the more eclectic pieces. The guys were silent until I held up one of the treasures I found.
Both sighed and drew in a breath. The pants had metal spikes running down the sides of the legs. The shiny black leather glistened as I stroked it.
"Which of you lucky ducks get to wear these beauties?"
Their faces remained stoic and I tossed them at Ben. "Try them on at least. You can't go in like you are now. You won't make it past the front door."
Ben held the pants like they might have some sort of contagious element to them. Then he grinned and held them in front of his legs.
"What the hell. Not like anyone who knows me will be there and we need a lead if we are going to find the jerks that keep hurting women."
"That's what I like to hear. Forget vanity and pride. This is about my enjoyment. I mean it's about solving the case."
I snatched another pair from the reject pile and suppressed a giggle. I tossed them to Damon.
"Kat," he growled between clenched teeth. "There is no material covering the ass in these."
I blinked trying to look innocent while holding back the giggles. I couldn't help my reaction.
"You don't say?"
"I will acquire my clothes for tonight. I will meet you two there at 10:00PM. Don't be late."
"You're leaving?"
"I need to see if we got more information from the blood from your window and if there is a match in the chip data base. The more we know going in the stronger we are."
"See you tonight."
Damon left and my smile seemed to go with him.
"What are you wearing tonight Kat?"
Ben grinned wolfishly.
"You'll see. We can make it a surprise."
"I still need a shirt."
"No, this place isn't exactly a shirt required kind of establishment."
"Fair enough. At least tell me this has been cleaned."
"Of course it has silly. Lila and I make sure all the donations get a good cleaning spell coutesy of Stella."
"Stella's a witch?"
"Well maybe not a witch persay. More like a conjuror. A pervayer of knowledge."
"I'll say one thing for you Kat. You are never boring."
"Really?" I tapped my finger on lip and scanned through some of my past memories. "You might be right. My ex never called me boring but he did call me crazy."
Ben shook his head. "Rookie, he never should have called a woman crazy. That only makes her want to prove it."
"Right, it was shame about his car and how it ended up in the pit like it did."
"Should I even ask what the pit is?"
"It's a sink hole."
"Did you really put his car in it?"
"No, he thought it was me though. I kind of wish I had. Nothing I could do to convince him it wasn't me either. He really must not have known me that well. If it was me I would have taken credit. Served him right though. He hit on Lila and then lied about it."
"Not all men are pigs." Ben placed his hand on my shoulder.
"I know. There are a lot of good ones. I just seem to find the ones that need attitude adjustment."
"Should we grab some food? I'll buy."
"You had me at food."
We left the storage room and placed Ben's new fashionable pants in my place. I gave Luna some really good scratches and feed her again. Nothing worse than a grumpy cat. If I didn't all my stuff would get knocked off onto the floor.
She meowed and went to her window and waited for me to crack it.
"I'm sorry, No more fresh air for awhile. I don't want to clean up anymore blood. I promise when this is done I will."
She flicked her tail back and forth and I hoped it was cat for okay I understand.
"You ready to go?"
"Yeah. where you taking me?"
"I smelled this really great place when we were in the market. I thought we could walk back there and see if they are open."
"Sure. That sounds great."
Ben gave me a small smile and I returned it. I did my best to pretend that bad things didn't keep happening. That women weren't getting hurt and going missing. I pretended that it was a date.
I really looked at Ben. He didn't fit what I would typically consider handsome. He had rough features. Wild like the wolf genes that shared his body. I could tell that family and his pack mattered to him. I wondered if my family searched for me like he searched for the girls in his pack.
All this time and nothing. I clenched my fist. I wouldn't let the girls be missing forever. I'd find them. I promise.
"I think we took a wrong turn."
I looked up and followed Ben's gaze.
"Crap on a cracker."
"I'm guessing this isn't good." Ben scanned the area.
"Not exactly. Fae are fickle. Depends on how they are feeling this evening. I'm sorry. I should have been paying attention."
"Don't worry about it. I've had my fair share of deelings with the Fae. I was distracted and not paying attention."
"What could possibly distract you?"
Ben looked his gaze with mine and my body heated.
"Probably low blood sugar."
I snorted.
"Katherine of the Hideout. It has been awhile. What brings you to my neck of the woods."
The singsong voice chimed in my ears and I knew I needed to protect Ben.
"Khloe. Long time no see. How's your nose after I broke it?"
