I am sitting in the library as the blasting of music from my headphones keeps me motivated. So far, the day hasn't been that busy as it is almost the weekend. It's been two weeks since I accepted Will's offer for me to tutor him and so far, it's not as bad as I thought. I have been very careful with my words as I don't want to leak out too much information about myself.
But, Will's more open-minded than I thought he would be. He seems more interested in my life than his grades, which is concerning in two ways: I don't want him to know more about my life and I also want his grades to be raised before his parents yell at him for not doing so. Before I can think any more, I see Ms. Darian from my peripheral vision, walk up to me with someone unknown behind her.
I take off my headphones and face her. "Ashley, is it okay if you can squeeze in one more tutoring session before Will comes?" she asks me with a small smile.
My eyes shift over to the girl behind her and she has blonde hair and blue eyes. Typical. She is also chewing her gum obnoxiously, which is something else that's ticking me off too. Glancing at the rest of her body, she is wearing very shiny clothing that painfully glimmers back into my eyes. I then shift my eyes back to Ms. Darian. "No, unless if it's something quick," I say flatly. "Will's coming very soon and I can't possibly teach her something that's complicated. It'll just be a hassle at that point."
The girl flickers her blue eyes at me in disgust. "Well, sorry, Bethany. I tried. I told you it wasn't going to work. Ashley has a busy schedule." Ms. Darian tells her.
Bethany. That's her name. I've never seen her before. She continues to chew her gum loudly as she shifts her eyes back and forth between us. "Fine, if you don't want to help me, then I guess I'll go somewhere else," she says in a sassy tone.
She turns her back on us as she heads for the exit. I look at Ms. Darian and she rolls her eyes. "I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that," I say softly as I turn around to look at my homework once again. Before I can even turn on my music again, I hear a conversation going on in the entrance, which catches my attention.
It's the sound of Will's British accent and Bethany's squeaky voice. I purse my lips as I try to eavesdrop on their conversation, but it is a little hard to do so when they're whispering. But as time passes, it seems like their conversation has turned into some kind of argument. Ms. Darian has already walked back into her office, so she might not be hearing these things.
So, in order to resolve the conflict, I slowly walk to the library exit and see what's going on. Bethany's back is turned to me and I notice Will is petrified as he's avoiding Bethany's gaze. "Leave me alone, Bethany," he says while he grits his teeth.
"Will, we can talk about this. Just give me another chance," she begs some more.
This gets me fired up as she doesn't listen to what he wants and is clearly bothering him. Even though I don't want to get into their conflict, I just want to go home as soon as possible. "You heard him, Bethany. Leave him alone," I say as I lean my shoulder against the wall. Her body tenses up for a second and then loosens. She turns her body toward me and then squints her blue eyes at me.
"What? Did I say anything wrong?" I ask as I walk toward them. "He's clearly asked you to stop for the past five minutes and you keep pushing. I have a session with him. So please, can you leave or else I will make you leave myself."
I hold my stance as best as I can before she storms out of the library in anger. I roll my eyes as I walk back into the library without even taking a second glance at Will as he trails behind me. Sighing as I sit down in the chair, I put my headphones away in my backpack as Will pulls out a chair to sit across from me.
"I-I'm sorry that you had to see that," he says as he avoids my gaze.
"Who was that?" I ask as curiosity gets the best of me.
"An ex-girlfriend."
My eyes widen in surprise. "No offense, but you dated her?"
He sighs as it clearly looks like he doesn't want to talk about it. "Yeah, believe it or not. It was a rough one."
"It's fine. As long as you understand what was wrong in that relationship, then you can call it a successful one." I flash him a small smile.
"Yeah. I don't think so, but the past is the past. You can't change it." At least he's not lying.
"That's right. And now I am terrified that she's going to come for me because of what I said back there."
Will shakes his head. "She might seem tough on the outside, but she's pretty much a baby on the inside. So, as long as you have that attitude like you did back there and you have me by your side, then you have nothing to worry about." He flashes back that same smile that I showed him. I can feel the temperature on my cheeks starting to rise.
Averting my gaze from his, I quickly organize my papers that are in front of him into my binder. "So, what's the plan for today?" I ask.
"More precalc and bio because I had no idea what the teacher was talking about today and I think the rest of the class felt the same way," he answers.
"Or it was just you and you just don't want to admit it," I tease with a grin. He glares at me with his playful green eyes. "Chop chop. We got a long day ahead of us if you didn't understand anything that your teacher said, then we better get going."
