Delilah and Tom - Present
Both ordered meatless lasagna that arrived at the table after half an hour. That melted cheese is inviting to the eye but the bubbly sauce just out of the oven leads Delilah and Thomas to make a toast first because the night that is just beginning.
- After that, I don't know if I can get any dessert.
- It is amazing how natural you say this. OF COURSE you are going to have dessert and I bet you that there will be chocolate. It's always like that when we dine out, Dede.
- And what's the problem with that? Just because of this comment, you won’t taste it, also a habit of our dinners. This time, you ask one for yourself.
A sudden shiver freezes their smiles. The glasses remain in the air without touching to celebrate. Both stop, look each other in the eye without moving as if it were a moment captured in a photograph.
- Do you feel the same?
Delilah nods slightly.
- What shall we do? If we turn around, it will show a lot. Whoever it is, also knows that we're here. Do we eat and leave?
- Better not. If we come across this person, we will learn who it is ... but that person will also know who we are. Are you willing to risk it?
- You were a pleasant surprise. How long have we known each other, Tom?
- More than wonderfully painful 200 years, dear. - Thomas taps the glass to finally finish the toast suspended in the air and laughs at Delilah's expression of controlled fury. - Focus on the word wonderfully, girl. You know well that immortality weighs on my heart. - He looks down at the food disguising his sad expression. - Shall we attack? Enjoy your food…
Like Delilah, life became less boring when they found each other. They had already crossed paths with other immortals but they followed different paths. Mostly alone. It was because of loneliness that they got together, tired of becoming attached to people they watched getting old and die. There were times when they longed for death and often attempted on their own lives but that only took them to another location the next day. The restart was a new opportunity that should be considered a blessing, but with a big drawback: the restart was always with the same body and with the same memories. Thomas presses his hand on his chest and feels the scar that was left the last time he wanted to disappear from the face of the earth.
