He had finally escaped his personal hell, although he knows he couldn't do it with out Rose, the gardener's daughter, who had a green thumb, just like her father. She loved to give him plants and glimpses of the outdoors when no one was looking. He sends out a silent prayer that she hasn't been caught and punished for helping him break free from the room he was locked in since he was 6 years old without his family.
'I'm hungry, Kye. Can we try to hunt since we are in the woods?'
He rolls his eyes at the eagerness of Milo, his lynx spirit.
'Just a while longer Milo. We have to make sure we are far enough away from Chris and his minions.'
'Hurry up or I won't be able to contain the need to hunt and the shift will hurt.'
Kye doesn't need to send a response to to Milo. Both of them know that what he said is correct. Most of his shifts had been because Milo couldn't control the need to hunt anymore. Not being feed for long periods of time to keep him weak had taken a toll on more than his body. Milo had trouble reining in himself when there was nothing to hunt or eat.
'Are we there yet?' Milo asks in a whiny voice.
'This is a good distance away from the house. You can shift whenever you're ready.'
'It better be. We've been walking for three days!'
'It has only been two and a half, Milo. Now shift before it's too late.'
Kye smiles, knowing this will be the first time he shifts fully while free. He was born with a defect that causes his lynx ears to be out all the time, shifted or not. His smile disappears thinking of how many times Chris and his rich friends would make fun of his ears, and all the treatments he was forced to take to try and fix the "mistake".
He feels the shift and freedom wash over him, and they sniff for any food, and catch the scent trail of a rabbit.
Off Kye and Milo go, chasing a rabbit, and being free for the first time since the were taken away from their family at 6 years old.
