We had just moved together, Lea and I. We were lucky we were women: Gabriel and Jake couldn't dare ask to be placed in the same room, but no one batted an eye when Lea told the Head Housekeeper she wanted to switch rooms with another maid, my former roommate. Everybody knew we were friends, neither of us ever attracted attention to herself, so she let us.
Knowing the costs of living inside our fantasy, we tried to be invisible. Nothing ever happened, outside our room, we even avoided talking to each other on the hallways. We were saving our wages, to leave. Maybe to that country you hate so much, where people are left to decide for themselves who they love.
Good servants, never complaining, head down in shame, waiting for our money to be enough.
