Episode 18 - Number 4
It’s beautiful here. Flowers lining the path and birds flying from tree to tree right over the heads of the rich. As pet birds, they never leave the main road, even though the young kittens continue to leap at them. The lamps here only change one colour at a time, white light illuminating the space as I step under the first light, setting a gentle glow upon large houses with gardens. I smile as I watch the lights change to white along the road: the city is thanking me for saving it. Breathing in, I can smell the fresh air created by the flowers, trees and greenery at the front of each home. A small artificial river winds around every garden, marked to the individual Cats’ territory with a chosen scent. My most well selling elixir: bought to give a new scent to the water each day. Looking around at the benches, it seems as if the rich did not run from the Dragon, but rather continued to sit and talk about the road.
On the first bench I pass I can feel their eyes on me; hear their whispers.
“Is it her?”
“I think so. Look at her tail.”
“What is she doing here?”
“I need to find the number four,” I say whirling around to end their distasteful gossiping, tail almost hitting them, purposefully. In their shock at my action, the two jump right up into the tree next to them, male biting himself with his large fangs. Face turning red with laughter, Trolling falls down from my shoulder.
“Why shall we help a Scat-cat?”
The female sneers down at me pretentiously.
“I’m not a Scat-cat. I am the High Princess and current Queen.”
I will not have them speak of me in such a way. Scat-cats live outside the city within the Milk-Swamp. I take a deep breath to calm myself as she swings down as a Monkeymen, turns away, and raises her tail. Well if she won’t talk to me I shall just continue on my way. I quickly spin to leave, fluffy tail coming into contact with the male’s face as he jumps down, Trolling’s giggles growing as I mumble to myself…
“So where is number four?”
I watch as Trolling gets up and flies to the first house, the female in the garden reaching to catch him as he passes the water.
“You shan’t be here! I’ll eat you!”
With that, Trolling flies around her even more, so she leaps up to catch him again and again, each time unsuccessful. At the next house, no one is home, allowing Trolling to fly right up to the door.
“Number twenty-two!”
He flew back to me as a male stand in the next garden ready with one of the special catchers. When you swing with it wind magic will be released but the wind flows against the catcher so all birds/fairies will be caught into the catcher.
I stop a kitty that almost catches one of the birds, only with her paws.
“Where is number four?"
"I don’t know, the house numbers aren’t in order!"
The kitty says that while she makes a big jump, running away with the bird in her mouth. This will be difficult...
As we continue to search, I spot a familiar group and choose to listen from afar. I am pretty good at sneaking around if I say so myself.
Sitting on a bench, the Wolfmale and the four females wait for Meow, me, uncertain as to when - or if - she’ll arrive. Eventually, Diana speaks her concerns,
“Shouldn’t we go to the swamp?”
“No, ladies, we need to go to number four, as I promised the Princess.”
“Shan’t we skip that and find our own way there?” Digna suggests, anxious to go. Diva, wanting her to say, also chimes in.
“Yeah, we don’t like the Princess.”
“Is that true? But… I am a Wolf and I believe in her, Princess or not. I will return to the Wing Wolves.”
“We know where the house is.”
“Thank you, Dillian. Help me get there.”
They stand, and I observe their help to him, assisting him with some sort of injury. Was it the Dragon?
“Trolling, you just stay quiet.”
I take his huge grin as a confirmation and begin to move quietly from tree to tree where I can watch them. A few Catmen spot me, but return to their own business quickly, taking my actions as normal.
“You were so strong.”
“I know right, Dillian? He kept us safe from that fire magic.” Diana says.
“I know my ladies, I can barely believe it either.”
“It’s so good that you’re skilled in close combat.” Dillian continues, excited to praise him. Who are they talking about? Did the Red Sorcerer attack them?
“What was it he said while you fought?”
“‘All of this was my failure… I must be punished for the return of the Monster that will end this world.’ That’s what he said, Diva.”
“Monster? What Monster?”
“Honestly Digna you’re always in your own little world!” Diva speaks for her sisters as they laugh.
“It’s ok for her to ask ladies, we don’t know that the Dragon is the monster. It could be the Furless or the Necromancer.” He grins as Digna leans over to give him a big kiss, then turns to Diva as she speaks.
“Then it might also be the one controlling the Shadow-Crawlers?”
"But Digna it was him that controlled them! Again, you’re not following."
Diva smiles to the others, who smile back, giving Diva their approval of her previous statement.
"Ladies he may control them, but read the lines as Digna, maybe he is being controlled as well."
"Uh, never think about that, though you are so wise," ends Diva with a kiss on the Wolfman’s cheek.
Soon we turn onto a small path to the left, which squeezes between two houses. I jump up on a beam from a nearby house and quickly notice Diana looking up at me.
“I will be right back, I just want to stretch a little.”
She turns to walk towards me. I jump down, landing on one knee like the heroes in my favourite fairy tales.
“My Princess, if I may?”
“Yes, of course.”
“You can heal… so will you heal our Wolf?”
So much kindness towards someone that is not a Catmen… She has a truly purrheart.
“I will, because you’ve asked. Let’s go back to them.”
She smiles as we move against the others, but before I make my entrance, there is something I need to know.
"Diana, who was it that attacked you?"
"I have seen him before. Do you remember the one we call Fairyman?"
"From the world meeting?"
"Yes."
Who is she? How can she know about the world meetings? And why would the speaker of the Fairies attack them?
Still behind them I make my presence known by mistake, and quickly respond…
“uh, it seems you’re hurt.”
I think to myself, I am a stupid cat now. I need more answers from Diana but that will have to wait for another time.
“Princess! There you are. I was just protecting the sisters as you asked, and use…”
“... And you’ve done a great job,” says Dillian quickly and makes strange eyes to the others. A moment of silence flows in the wind so I summon my staff and point it against his leg.
“White heal, make him feel. White white, Let him be alright"
Like a snake, white fog flows from my staff and surrounds his leg, being absorbed into the injury to give it strength and energy to heal. As the remaining fog snakes back into my staff, I call my magic back and let the staff dissipate from my paw.
“Thank you. You truly are the White Sorceress.”
“This is number four.”
Dillian gestures to a small house, roof tall and pointy and crooked like a Mage’s hat. There’s no water around the old, fragile looking house like the others. My two Wolves stand in front of the house like guards.
“After the Dragon left the city, we followed some Catmen back, while others stood in the Milk-Swamp. We knew we would find you here.”
“My Princess, we have checked around the whole house. There’s only overgrown grass and flowers.”
I am about to thank the two when I notice them staring intensely at the Wolfmale.
“You know, you don’t have power over us anymore, we can kill you if you try something.” The Alpha growls out. The Wolfmale glances at me.
“All I want to do is the right thing.”
“I trust him.”
My two Wolves come closer to me, still watching him, but backing off in understanding of my words.
“Does anyone live here?” I ask, sensing a small pulse of magic being emitted from the house.
“No one can live there,” says Digna
I move closer to the door, which is half my size.
"What are…"
Digna stops her line, Trolling is still quiet on my shoulder even as I drop onto my front paws to fit into the door.
“Are you all coming?” I asked around.
Suddenly, I hear Dillian’s voice…
“Wait!”
Diva and Diana added their own words in quick succession to hers.
“Are you a stupid Cat?!” yells Digna continues to shout to really stop me.
“The magic! It’ll hurt you!”
I bring myself back up onto my hind paws and turn to them.
“I can feel the magic, but could not see it’s intentions.”
Diva, having rushed to my side, I let the other three pass.
“Step aside sister-Princess.” says Diva.
I step away from the house, my Wolves beside me.
“Be prepared, Wolves.”
“Always.”
“Is it time to do this?” I hear worry in Dillian’s voice as she looks to the others. Diva, as usual, acts as the voice of reason.
“As the Furless said, it’s time.”
In a more happier voice than I have heard Digna speak,
"Yes! No more hiding, right?"
Diana just smiled.
With a nod from the other two, they all stand in a half-circle in the garden, several feet from the door, and begin to sing. I have never heard the Green Magic song before, but I know that it must be powerful.
“The way… the way of the wind, coming from my mind.”
Tendrils of Green Magic fog begin to form around each of their paws.
“Green Magic… Green Magic in my paw, it is your law.”
Out of nowhere four green Sorceress capes form over the sisters.
I can see how the power grows, the magical fog surrounding them as they begin to dance in circles. If they don’t do it now, the magic will hit them.
“The Mage… The Mage is my power, to open this tower.”
The green fog begins to flow towards the house, revealing the magic shield as it pushes against it. Like the Dragon’s fire, it begins to flow around the shield, covering it completely. I jump, startled as a loud, explosive noise comes from within the fog. Trolling, noticing how the Wolfmale and I panic, begins to chuckle, laughing with all the capacity his little lungs can carry. The Wolves have jumped in front of me. The fog dissipates; the house is safe to enter.
“How were you able to do that?”
I ask the sisters as they relax their bodies. Dillian, having already turned to face me, explains.
“We were lucky enough to be born with Green Magic.”
“Yes, all Catmen are born with Green Magic.” They laugh, Diana being able to slow her giggles enough to explain.
“Some are born with more magic than others.”
“We are the four sisters with the most Green Magic in the world.” Diva continues for her as her laughing calms.
“Yeah, we’re-” Digna begins to speak, but the others quickly jump to speak with her, seeming to jump with happiness.
“The Green-Sisters!”
So… that’s why I was to save them, but…
“Why didn’t you help fight the Dragon?”
They don’t answer at first, so I turn to Dillian and look her in the eyes, waiting for an answer.
“We’ve told you, our power was needed after the fight, so we had to wait.”
I let my eyes wander over them, taking in their youthful features.
“How can you be the Mighty Green-Sisters? You look nothing like…”
“Like the vision you had of us in the woods, you only see the sorceress cape right?” Diana asks as my speech begins to fade, taking my paw in hers. They’re all watching me, calmly, eyes shimmering with green like their souls are only made up of Green Magic.
“You’re not the only one with secrets, sister sorceress.”
They laugh at the sister thing, and Trolling is coming out of his silent mood, laughing with them.
Confused, and unsure what to say, I try to regain control…
“Come, we should all go inside.”
I wait a moment before walking, watching as the Wolfmale pushes one of my Wolves aside to run into the arms of the sisters.
“Hey, I have the Green-Sisters! I love you all!”
I can feel myself smiling as I watch the display of happiness and listen to Trolling join in with their laughter again. Turning my focus to the matter at hand, I walk up to the door, wondering about the house. Was it a Mage’s home? So many fairy tales have been coming true that it could even be one of the three Mages at this rate! Chuckling at the idea, I take a deep breath and drop to all fours to take the door handle in my paw.
We step inside….
